People that should have either won or been nominated for an academy award by nowby YourArgumentIsInvalid | created - 28 May 2011 | updated - 08 Jun 2011 | Public
Sir Christopher Frank Carandini Lee was perhaps the only actor of his generation to have starred in so many films and cult saga. Although most notable for personifying bloodsucking vampire, Dracula, on screen, he portrayed other varied characters on screen, most of which were villains, whether it ...
He has done a crap load of movies and not one nomination? Really?
Actor | The Grand Budapest Hotel
Actor Ralph Nathaniel Twisleton-Wykeham-Fiennes was born on December 22, 1962 in Suffolk, England, to Jennifer Anne Mary Alleyne (Lash), a novelist, and Mark Fiennes, a photographer. He is the eldest of six children. Four of his siblings are also in the arts: Martha Fiennes, a director; Magnus ...
English Patient or Schindler's List. Personally, after all his work as Voldemort, he should get a nomination for that. He really does a good job of creating one of the most terrifying villains.
3. Johnny Depp
Johnny Depp is perhaps one of the most versatile actors of his day and age in Hollywood.
He was born John Christopher Depp II in Owensboro, Kentucky, on June 9, 1963, to Betty Sue (Wells), who worked as a waitress, and John Christopher Depp, a civil engineer.
Depp was raised in Florida. He dropped ...
His nomination for being Sweeney Todd was well-earned. If Daniel Day Lewis hadn't been in There Will Be Blood, then I would have said give it to him (or Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises)
4. Gary Oldman
Actor | Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Gary Oldman is a talented British born movie actor who played Sid Vicious in Sid & Nancy, Drexl in True Romance, and George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. He starred in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the remake of RoboCop. He is also an English filmmaker, musician and author. Renowned for...
For either the Professional or Dracula. His performance as Count Dracula is one of my favorite performances not only as a villain but just as an actor in general
Writer | Inception
Best known for his cerebral, often nonlinear storytelling, acclaimed writer-director Christopher Nolan was born on July 30, 1970 in London, England. Over the course of 15 years of filmmaking, Nolan has gone from low-budget independent films to working on some of the biggest blockbusters ever made.
NOMINATED (for directing), but not a win just yet, his career is still young. But an oscar is definitely in his future I believe. If he does his Howard Hughes movie after he finishes Batman, we may see it yet.
6. Ridley Scott
Producer | The Martian
Ridley Scott was born on November 30, 1937 in South Shields, Tyne and Wear (then County Durham). His father was an officer in the Royal Engineers and the family followed him as his career posted him throughout the United Kingdom and Europe before they eventually returned to Teesside. Scott wanted ...
He is a great director, the problem, I think, is that he is given the wrong screenplays that don't take full advantage of his talent (Robin Hood, Kingdom of Heaven). He does a terrific job of creating a set that makes you feel like you are in the time period in which the movie takes place, but the scripts that he is given just aren't that great. If he is able to make another movie like Gladiator, he may get it.
Writer | Reservoir Dogs
Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. His father, Tony Tarantino, is an Italian-American actor and musician from New York, and his mother, Connie (McHugh), is a nurse from Tennessee. Quentin moved with his mother to Torrance, California, when he was four years old.
In January of...
For directing. I have not seen the Hurt Locker just yet, but the fact that Avatar was getting more buzz than Inglourious Basterds just goes to show you where we are at
Director | Se7en
David Fincher was born in 1962 in Denver, Colorado, and was raised in Marin County, California. When he was 18 years old he went to work for John Korty at Korty Films in Mill Valley. He subsequently worked at ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) from 1981-1983. Fincher left ILM to direct TV commercials...
For either Se7en, Fight Club or Benjamin Button. The Social Network was good, in fact it was one of my favorite films of 2010, but I'm not sure I would have given it to him for that movie. I would sooner give it to Darren Aronofsky for Black Swan, or The Coen Bros for True Grit
Director | The Fly
David Cronenberg, also known as the King of Venereal Horror or the Baron of Blood, was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in 1943. His father, Milton Cronenberg, was a journalist and editor, and his mother, Esther (Sumberg), was a piano player. After showing an inclination for literature at an early...
10. Darren Aronofsky
Director | Pi
Darren Aronofsky was born February 12, 1969, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, Darren was always artistic: he loved classic movies and, as a teenager, he even spent time doing graffiti art. After high school, Darren went to Harvard University to study film (both live-action and animation). He won ...
11. Meryl Streep
Actress | Out of Africa
Considered by many critics to be the greatest living actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for the Academy Award an astonishing 20 times, and has won it three times. Meryl was born Mary Louise Streep in 1949 in Summit, New Jersey, to Mary Wolf (Wilkinson), a commercial artist, and Harry William ...
Should have won more. She's great
12. Orson Welles
Actor | Citizen Kane
His father was a well-to-do inventor, his mother a beautiful concert pianist; Orson Welles was gifted in many arts (magic, piano, painting) as a child. When his mother died (he was nine) he traveled the world with his father. When his father died (he was fifteen) he became the ward of Chicago's Dr....
The guy that gave us Citizen Kane has not one Oscar (for directing)? What is this madness?
13. Ian McKellen
Widely regarded as one of greatest stage and screen actors, both in his native Great Britain and internationally, twice nominated for the Oscar and recipient of every major theatrical award in UK and US, Ian Murray McKellen was born on May 25, 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire, England, to Margery Lois (...
14. Clint Eastwood
Actor | Gran Torino
Clint Eastwood was born May 31, 1930 in San Francisco, the son of Clinton Eastwood Sr., a manufacturing executive for Georgia-Pacific Corporation, and Ruth Wood, a housewife turned IBM operator. He had a comfortable, middle-class upbringing in nearby Piedmont. At school Clint took interest in music...
He is a great director (one of my favorites), but his acting has sadly gone unnoticed by the academy. And now I hear that he has retired from acting. He'll still direct though.
15. Martin Scorsese
Director | Taxi Driver
Martin Charles Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942 in Queens, New York City, to Catherine Scorsese (née Cappa) and Charles Scorsese, who both worked in Manhattan's garment district, and whose families both came from Palermo, Sicily. He was raised in the neighborhood of Little Italy, which later ...
Should have won it ALOT sooner than the Departed. (I liked the Departed, but it doesn't hold a candle to Taxi Driver or Goodfellas)
16. Al Pacino
Actor | Serpico
One of the greatest actors in all of film history, Al Pacino established himself during one of film's greatest decades, the 1970s, and has become an enduring and iconic figure in the world of American movies.
Alfredo James Pacino was born on April 25, 1940, in the Bronx, New York, to an ...
Same with the one above, he should have won it ALOT sooner than Scent of a Woman
17. Kevin Bacon
Actor | Footloose
Kevin Norwood Bacon was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Ruth Hilda (Holmes), an elementary school teacher, and Edmund Norwood Bacon, a prominent architect who was on the cover of Time Magazine in November 1964.
Kevin's early training as an actor came from The Manning Street. ...
I think he should have at least gotten a nomination by now, especially for Mystic River. Don't get me wrong, Sean Penn and Tim Robbins gave great performances, but I felt that Kevin Bacon was sadly overlooked when Oscar time came around
18. Alfred Hitchcock
Director | Psycho
Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born in Leytonstone, Essex, England. He was the son of Emma Jane (Whelan; 1863 - 1942) and East End greengrocer William Hitchcock (1862 - 1914). His parents were both of half English and half Irish ancestry. He had two older siblings, William Hitchcock (born 1890) and ...
One of the truly great masters of horror. I wish I could resurrect him, show him the Saw movies, and then ask him to start directing again, that way we could actually have real horror films again. Ones that would actually stick with us not just give us shock value with scenes we will forget by the time we get home from the theater.
19. Stanley Kubrick
Director | 2001: A Space Odyssey
Stanley Kubrick was born in Manhattan, New York City, to Sadie Gertrude (Perveler) and Jacob Leonard Kubrick, a physician. His family were Jewish immigrants (from Austria, Romania, and Russia). Stanley was considered intelligent, despite poor grades at school. Hoping that a change of scenery would ...
Widely regarded as one of the greatest film directors of all time, and yet not one Oscar to show for it. It's sad that his time came too soon.
20. Viggo Mortensen
Actor | Captain Fantastic
Since his screen debut as a young Amish Farmer in Peter Weir's Witness (1985), Viggo Mortensen's career has been marked by a steady string of well-rounded performances.
Mortensen was born in New York City, to Grace Gamble (Atkinson) and Viggo Peter Mortensen, Sr. His father was Danish, his mother was...
I refer you to the note I made about Johnny Depp. I also think he should have gotten a nomination for Lord of the Rings and The Road
21. Blake Lively
Actress | The Age of Adaline
Blake Lively was born Blake Ellender Brown in Tarzana, California, to a show business family. Her mother, Elaine Lively (née McAlpin), is an acting coach and talent manager, and her father, Ernie Lively (born Ernest Wilson Brown, Jr.), is an actor and teacher. Her brother is actor Eric Lively, and ...
I think her work in The Town deserved a supporting actress nomination and I was rather stunned when she did not get at least that. The winner, however, should have been the next entree on this list
22. Hailee Steinfeld
Actress | True Grit
Hailee Steinfeld was born on December 11, 1996 in Tarzana, California, to Cheri (Domasin), an interior designer, and Peter Steinfeld, a personal fitness trainer. She has a brother, Griffin. Her uncle is Jake Steinfeld, a fitness trainer, and her great-uncle is actor Larry Domasin. Her father is of ...
For a young actress who had never been in anything else before and who was only fourteen years old, she really held her own with the big boys. In fact, just saying she held her own isn't enough, she was fantastic and I hope she gets more opportunities to show off her acting chops
