She's home in California after another cross-country trip, which she's been making a lot recently as she shuttles between the coasts for red carpet events and other promotional duties. Who’s the leading contender to win the Academy Award in February for Best Actress? According to the influential Los Angeles Times it’s none other than Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who stars in “The Lovely Bones,” the film adaptation of the hugely successful Alice Sebold novel about a teenager who is raped and murdered, and watches from above the post-crime repercussions for the grief-stricken family she left behind, and the neighbor who committed the heinous act. The Times, in its awards blog called “The Envelope,” reported last week that Saoirse, all of 15, is simply captivating in the film, and that she totally eclipses her co-stars Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz. “A spy tells us that Saoirse Ronan is in virtually every scene of ‘The Lovely Bones’ . . . and we hear that Ronan steals the picture from everyone. This 15-year-old actress is quickly climbing the Hollywood ladder,” the blog said. »

Amy Adams with the take down! That's right: The most pleasant person alive gets in the middle of a cat fight in this clip from The Fighter.
Like most catfights, there's very little real action, and the this video is actually a behind-the-scenes look at filming the clip, which also features Mark Wahlberg - or for these purposes Mahk Wahlbug - and Melissa Leo, an Oscar nominee last year for Frozen River. In fact, of the principal cast, the only non-Academy Award nominee is Christian Bale, and he might be the most singularly talented of the group.
He doesn't factor into this video from the set of David O. Russell's bio-pic of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward, but I think you can get a sense for the nature of the people involved: Tough, working class, and they probably won't take much of your shit. »

Ho ho ho, Merry- wait, that’s not right. Gobble gobble! Happy Thanks- shoot, that’s not right either. Ahem. *evil high-pitched cackle* Happy Halloween! Ah, there we go. Sorry for the confusion there, folks. It happens when you try to get a Turkey Santa Claus costume for this special day. You get confused. For some reason, I couldn’t find one anywhere, but enough about me. And since it’s Halloween weekend, time for scary movies! Right?
Maybe not so much. At least not new ones, as it looks like Hollywood decided too many folks were going to be out trick-or-treating to check out a new movie this weekend. Fortunately or unfortunately, Saw VI came out last week and Paranormal Activity is still in theaters scaring up big bucks (more on that later).
First up this week, we have Michael Jackson’s sold out This Is It that opened on Wednesday. »

Anne Heche, god bless her, has kept a career going through stunt lesbian relationships, multiple marriages and failed TV shows, and remember that whole abducted by aliens phase? But when she's starring alongside Ed Helms, pretty much my favorite person on the planet right now, she may very well have gone too far. According to Variety, Heche will play a woman who befriends Helms's character in Cedar Rapids, about an insurance agent at an industry convention. And that's not all! She's also taking a role in The Other Guys, the new Adam McKay movie starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. This woman's agent deserves a raise, that's for damn sure. It's not that I don't like Heche, really. I just have never seen what it is about her that makes her such a reliable comedic presence, and what merits her getting cast in two of the best-looking comedies coming up. »
