Have you been buying the minor huzz (hype+buzz) 'Robert De Niro's 7th Oscar nomination' for the holiday film Everybody's Fine? My friend txt critic saw it last night and sent the following note by phone...
it's, well, fine. most definitely a drama (despite the trailer) and conceptually a cross between About Schmidt and Four Christmases. nice, sweet and somewhat forgettable.
might, Might be a nomination for DeNiro, but i wouldn't bet on it.I dunno. I wasn't betting on it either but Best Actor sure seems vacant this year with only Colin Firth (A Single Man) and George Clooney (Up in the Air) catching any sort of real fire. As I've been saying for months, Fox Searchlight shouldn't have even hesitated to position Crazy Heart for a 2009 release. Jeff Bridges would have a clear shot at the career trophy given the field (if -- and it's always »

Chicago – When a New York subway dispatcher finds himself locked in a tense battle of the wits with a deranged criminal onboard Pelham 123, he’s offered this bit of advice from a seasoned hostage negotiator: don’t enter his world. The same warning could be issued to viewers intent on entering the world of Tony Scott. It is a cinematic landscape that is alternately marred and enhanced by Add.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
With his ever-changing frame rate and rapid editing, Scott speeds through his story until he lands on a part that sparks his interest; often a moment of physical or emotional violence. This plays out in extreme slo-mo, halting the movement and blurring the action to such an extent that the audience feels like they have been punched in the head.
The Taking of Pelham 123 was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 3rd, 2009.

There’s plenty to hate about G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra (Paramount): It’s packed with broad clichés, terrible lines, and utterly generic summer-blockbuster fodder. But compared to the clumsy, ugly nads-joke-fest that is the Transformers movie, it’s a pretty slick, propulsive package, and a solid win in the still-pretty-small “Hasbro program-length cartoon toy ads that became live-action summer blockbusters” category… Critics by and large gave a pass to the Denzel Washington/John Travolta thriller The Taking Of Pelham 1 2 3 (Sony), but for those of us who cherish the glorious profanity and local color ... »

Jurnee openly admits that she was a flirt at the age of three! She was doing a pepsi advert with Joe Montana, and she was playing with his collar, she told t5m. And her perchant for the older man didn't end there, as Jurnee also had many celebrity crushes from a young age like, Paul Newman, Wesley Snipes, Will Smith, Sidney Poitier, and Denzel Washington who she first saw in 'Glory' and 'Malcom X'. Jurnee has never told Denzel that she has a crush on him, now she admires him in a fraternal way. She recalls a hilarious story when she went to the movie theatre to watch 'Waiting to Exhale' starring Wesley Snipes. Everytime he came on screen, she would clap! »

Here's my problem with the picture: a furiously-filmed chase through the streets of Paris should be spectacular and thrilling. Instead, it's incoherent, routine, even disappointing. Director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, Van Helsing) turns in another by-the-numbers action spectacle, this time starring Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Marlon Wayans, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. There are better ways to waste your time and money. Skip it. Also on Blu-ray.

Tony Scott's remake is a higher-grade disappointment, coming achingly close to delivering an unqualified success. Derailed by John Travolta's unrepentant scenery-chewing, which goes far beyond the bounds of bad taste, and an unhealthy preoccupation with explaining everything, the film motors along reasonably well, fashioning a paranoid tale of post-9/11 terror and ticking time bomb suspense. Denzel Washington is eminently watchable, and »

After weeks of rather lackluster releases ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" being a prominent exception), we finally have a Tuesday jam-packed with first-run titles and notable catalog additions. From the on-screen debut of an elite military team to John Cusack's ode to love, we're covering them all in this DVD Report for Tuesday, November 3.
For any child of the '80s, the thought of "G.I. Joe" receiving the theatrical treatment was an intriguing proposition, and one fraught with worry. And for die-hard fans of writer Larry Hama's epic "G.I. Joe" comic book run, it was especially scary. In stark contrast to the campy animated series, Hama infused his 155-issue run with deeply developed character arcs, ever-twisting conspiracies and, to his credit, pulled no punches when it came to violence and death. Which "G.I. Joe" would the film rely on for its story and tone? While producers insisted they'd »

Tony Scott helms the remake of the 1974 film and Denzel Washington and John Travolta take the starring roles from Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw. Some things about the .74 version I liked better, but this redo is an enjoyable one. Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) used to be an administrator at the New York transit authority but while an internal investigation goes on because of an accusation of taking a bribe he.s on the dispatcher desk. His day starts off rather monotonously, but as he.s about to get off his shift Pelham 123 suddenly stops still on the digital board. The subway train has been hijacked by a group of armed men led by .Ryder. (John Travolta). »

George Clooney, Denzel Washington and Oprah Winfrey were among the first big names to land an invitation to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama during his first few months in office, according to official White House documents.
The trio were all vocal supporters of the politician's campaign to become the first black leader of America, and were said to have persuaded many to vote last year - especially Winfrey, who championed Obama on her hugely influential TV talkshow.
And Obama repaid his Hollywood supporters by ensuring they were allowed to visit him at the White House, according to a list released by his aides.
Clooney reportedly discussed his work as a U.N. messenger of peace in the war-torn Darfur of Sudan with Obama. »

Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney are among the A-list guests who’ve visited the White House since President Barack Obama and his family moved in last January. The Obama administration has released the names of 500 individuals (out of the reported tens of thousands) who’ve dropped by the current first family’s home, and other prominent figures on the list include Oscar-winner Denzel Washington, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, says MSNBC.com. Michael Jordan and Michael Moore visited as well -- but they're not the celebs those names are usually associated with, says the White House.

The Obama administration did a Friday afternoon news dump of the names of 500 visitors to the White House spanning the time period from January 20 to July 31, 2009. And almost no one from Hollywood showed up to meet the president or his family or his aides. Weird, especially since so much of Hollywood was supporting the Obama campaign. But the list is not comprehensive, just a response to specific disclosure requests. So who stopped by? George Clooney who once visited Vice President Joe Biden; Denzel Washington, twice, as part of a group tour; and Oprah who came by [...] »

Tony Scott is attached to direct a film about Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the founder of the male erotic dance club “Chippendales.”
The story will follow the rise of Banerjee from operating a gas station to owning a chain of night clubs worldwide, according to Variety. Chippendales’ massive success in the 80’s made him incredibly rich, but a series of lawsuits and increasing competition made him paranoid. In the early 90’s Banerjee was convicted of conspiracy and attempting to hire a hitman to knock off former choreographers and dancers. Banerjee ultimately committed suicide in his cell before sentencing.
Scott is attached to a multitude of projects, so this likely won’t be his next. He’s currently directing Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine. Looking at his list of possible movies, Scott may never get around to the rigorous research he’ll need to do for this movie.
Side note: Scott also directed Top Gun, »

If you're like me, you love the excess of the 1980s that's most likely directly responsible for the current downfall of our society. Thanks, a lot, parents. Your wanton disregard for decency and love for cocaine flushed us down the toilet. I know the truth. Bret Easton Ellis wrote my 8th grade history book. Luckily, we'll be affronted by that very excess when Denzel Washington enthusiast Tony Scott focuses his attention on the life of Chippendale's inventor Somen "Steve" Banerjee. There's currently no title, so I'm going to go ahead and call it Showgirls 3: Showboys 1: A Rope of Sand. According to Variety, the story will focus on Banerjee who went insane after getting successful and went as far as hiring a hitman to kill a choreographer. If you know anything else about Banerjee, you'll also already be aware that he was a pioneer of the female mud wrestling scene in Los Angeles and once ran »

Addressing the 80s crisis of muscular men who could only afford bow-ties and cuffs as formal wear, Tony Scott will direct a film about the rise and fall of Somer “Steve” Banerjee, the man who created Chippendales. While Banerjee built his male strip club into an 80s phenomenon, he was undone by excess and paranoia which was highly unusual for 80s strip club owners. According to Variety, Lisa Schrager, who penned the Heidi Fleiss story “Pay the Girl” for Nicole Kidman at Paramount and “Gangsta Bitches” at Universal, will adapt the film from a manuscript written by Rodney Sheldon.
I for one think this is a great pairing of director to material because Scott will be taking on a person I have no interest in whatsoever. He also can’t waste Denzel Washington’s time because Banerjee was of Indian descent. Finally, the perception of Chippendales will fit with Scott’s hyper-kinetic style. »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).
As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

Clint Eastwood is coming. Hide your Oscars!
I suppose you've already checked out the trailer for Invictus in beautiful Quicktime. Soon it will be embedded everywhere in crappier looking formats. The movie, based on this true story, is about Nelson Mandela's efforts to unite a divided South Africa through rugby. The trailer and synopsis suggest that it's a two-lead film as Morgan Freeman (as Mandela) and Matt Damon (looking athletic as Francois Pienaar) work together towards making this happen. Freeman is the mastermind, Damon acts as vessel. But since Invictus is another December Eastwood Oscar lob (oops, that's a tennis term. What do they say in football?) Matt Damon will obviously be demoted to supporting for the pursuit of Oscars.
I'm not quite buying the accents they conjure for Invictus but it is only a trailer and Freeman and Damon are both hugely talented fellows. It's hard to tell »

Just in case you haven’t heard, there is about to be an urban version of the hit film Ocean’s Eleven that recently starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt and the late Bernie Mac (to name a few) that will hit the big screen, which will be produced by Imagine Entertainment and Universal Studios. There have been several new developments since we last reported and we have the latest news.
We have discovered that the film is now official and will be directed by Brett Ratner (which no official announcement has been made about his involvement yet), and so far several stars are about to jump on board and sign. Our sources tell us that there will be an official announcement soon, and that the lead for this film looks like it will be Eddie Murphy who will play the leader of the crew of con artists, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle »

Welcome to an oversized edition of "The Good, The Bad and the Wtf," to make up for last week's absence. This time, we take a look at X-Men updates, a Turtles buyout, David Spade's shamelessness, a Michael Jackson controversy and how Denzel Washington is allegedly the worst person on Earth.
The Good
• Talking to Empire mag, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner updates fans on the status of future X-Men projects. Good news for those of you who were pissed off by Wolverine's treatment of Deadpool, because this is what Donner said about the proposed Deadpool movie:
I want to ignore the version of Deadpool that we saw in Wolverine and just start over again. Reboot it. Because this guy talks, obviously, and to muzzle him would be insane.
Cue collective sighs of relief.

Star Trek lead actor Chris Pine is considering commandeering another franchise from Paramount – one that was previously led by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and most recently Ben Affleck.
According to Variety, the actor who played the newest version of James T. Kirk is in negotiations to be the next Jack Ryan in a series that has already spanned four films (The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger, and The Sum of All Fears).
He is also in talks to work with Disturbia director D.J Caruso on a new project titled The Art of Making Money, which is set to start shooting early next year.
The next Jack Ryan film is in development, with producers Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mace Neufeld working on an original script by Hossein Amini, who used his original concept (the new project will not use a Tom Clancy novel directly, apparently »
