Leonardo DiCaprio Set to Voice Jack Frost in The Guardians

13 hours ago | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Though Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in more than his fair share of diverse and unique films, the actor has never before been cast in an animated movie. However, all that changes as DreamWorks Animation has officially announced that he is the first actor to join the voice cast of the recently announced movie The Guardians, which focuses on an Avengers-like assembly of imaginary icons like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny who protect children from the forces of evil. DiCaprio will voice Jack Frost (as seen above) who truly looks like him if he were thrown into an animated winter Tim Burton-esque universe. Read on for the plot. The film, which isn't due out until 2012, is based on a series of highly anticipated yet-to-be published books written by William Joyce. Here's the skinny on the story that we'll see play out over the course of the movie: "When an »

Decade in Review: 2002 Top Ten

2 December 2009 7:58 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As with 2000 and 2001, I'm reprinting my original top ten lists and commentary. If I've got something new to say, it'll be in red below.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2002. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were produced or released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Undervalued: Morvern Callar, Roger Dodger, About a Boy, White Oleander, Panic Room and Kissing Jessica Stein Top 10 Runners Up: Chicago, Monsoon Wedding, Punch Drunk Love and Spirited Away I still am glad I championed most of these movies though I am sad that some of them aren't in the top ten... particularly Morvern, Monsoon and the Miyazaki. The MMMs. Though I'm not sure I'd know what to remove to make room for them.

10. 8 Women (François Ozon)

A 2 Minute Preview of SyFy’s ‘Alice’

2 December 2009 11:15 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Excited for the upcoming SyFy adaptation of Lweis Carrol’s classic Alice in Wonderland tale? Well, if so you’re in luck because we’ve got a preview of that two-part drama for you right here. According to the network, this version of the story will be “an entirely new look at “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking-Glass.”

For this re-imagined adaptation, writer/director Nick Willing “mines the bizarre ingenuity and twisted logic of Carroll’s work to create a daringly different, boldly colorful and delightfully skewed dreamscape of his own.” Well, that does sound interesting, doesn’t it?

I wonder what Tim Burton would say about that? He’s been known to create a few different and bold dreamscapes himself. Oh well, I guess we’ll get a chance to compare this version with Burton’s when his hits theaters.

Until then, check out the preview »

Twilight gives new Brontë films wings

2 December 2009 9:28 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Success of the Twilight saga books and films inspire new productions of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre

The Brontës are back in fashion – with a bit of help from Bella Swan. New films of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre will shoot next spring, and a script about the teenage fantasies of the four Brontë siblings is in the works.

The film-makers are piggybacking off the success of the Twilight saga, which has sparked a renewed enthusiasm among financiers for gothic romance; the Brontës in particular. Wuthering Heights is one of Twilight heroine Bella Swan's favourite books, frequently referenced in the third episode Eclipse, whose storyline is inspired by Emily Brontë's only novel.

The producers of the latest Brontë projects are targeting the Twilight audience with younger casts than previous versions and scripts that emphasise the sensational gothic elements alongside a contemporary psychological realism.

From the Palantir! (A Fantasy News Round-Up)

2 December 2009 9:05 AM, PST | thetorchonline | See recent thetorchonline news »

Sigh. The filming of The Hobbit has reportedly been delayed (again!), and the studio has still not even greenlit the project. It's like they're saying, "What's that? You have a machine that'll print us billions of dollars? Yeah, okay, but we're kinda busy right now. Maybe in three years, okay?" Meanwhile, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader has wrapped, and here are some pics from the film. Worst. Job. Interview. Ever. Sci-fi writer Harlan Ellison says he'd "jump at the chance" to work on the Star Trek reboot, but that they'd have to pay him a lot of money, and oh, yeah, he's spent the last few decades suing the Star Trek rights holders for work he did on previous incarnations. The voice-casting notices for the animated remake of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie are out, and it's clearly going to be very different from the original short film. Most. »

(95) Days of Spirit

1 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Spirit Awards are coming! In 95 days. The nominees have a long time to decide which pair of jeans or casual designer wear would best suit the event. Though the Spirits have traditionally passed out their ever-so-slightly off mainstream prizes the day before the Oscars this year they’re moving to a Friday night situation on March 5th. All the better for partying? Still time to use those hangover cures before the Oscars on Sunday.

Sin Nombre, a 3 time nomineeHere are the nominees

Best Feature(500) Days Of Summer | Amreeka |Precious | Sin Nombre | The Last StationI warned y'all that The Last Station would have more awards strength than many pundits are indicating. I must get around to Sin Nombre before the end of this year. I suspect Precious is your winner since the Spirits generally award the actual Oscar hopefuls.

Exclusive Interview: Possesion(s) star Laurence Fuller

1 December 2009 3:51 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Possession(s), a new Australian short, featured one of the most notable launches in recent memory. To coincide with the film’s release a famous Peter Booth artwork, Painting (Man With Bandaged Head), was sold off in The Deutscher and Hackett Important Fine Art Auction.

The tie-in between the film and the auction comes in the shape of actor Laurence Fuller who used the painting, which he owned, as inspiration for the dark, brooding short.  His character Frank, upon seeing the Peter Booth work, becomes embroiled with a sense of obsession; he simply has to own the piece and will do anything to make it so. However, it soon becomes clear that Frank is not the only one consumed by the desire to possess.

Laurence Fuller shines in the lead role and it is easy to see why he is a much sought after young actor. Having attended the Method »

Exclusive: Get an Inside Look At Tim Burton’s MoMa Exhibit

1 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

While most film directors are considered “artists”, there are only a few that fit that role to it’s essential definition. Tim Burton is a filmmaker, writer, painter, and photographer. These skills alone could warrant him a feature at most museums, before you even take into account the vast worlds that Burton has created with every one of his films. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive peak at the brand new Tim Burton Exhibit in New York’s Museum of Modern Art sponsored by the SyFy channel, and we were blown away.

Starting with the opening hallway, the very first room lets you into Burton’s twisted Carnival setting, in which black light, several neon paintings, and a single rotating object sits in the center of the room. This alone is enough to make most cheap haunted houses worth it, and the real exhibit hasn’t even started. »

Frankenweenie Character and Plot Details Show Differences Between Short Film and Feature

1 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Casting has started for the voice cast of Tim Burton's upcoming stop-motion feature Frankenweenie, being adapted from his rather winning live-action short film. From the break down of characters, and the descriptions of some of their actions, it is becoming clear just how the redo will break away from the storyline of the original. Seeing as some of this is potentially light-ish spoiler material, I'll hide it after the break. What isn't sensitive information is the news that these characters are all children aged between 8 and 11. I'm sure the screenplay is more specific than this, but it is interesting to note the absence of adult roles. It's likely that this is because the adults will be cast with Burton stalwarts and Casting Director recommendations, not respondents to open casting calls. The lead role of Victor, also a child, has been left off of the list too - which starkid »

Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie' Begins Casting, Official Breakdown!

30 November 2009 8:13 PM, PST | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Man, I hate retyping information. This afternoon I received a fax from a close friend with some really interesting Intel. Apparently, Disney is officially undergoing casting for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, although a shoot date or location has yet to be locked down. At least they're moving on the project, at least that's something. Anyways, below you'll find the official breakdown being sent out to New York actors. Frankenweenie (1984) is one of Burton's earlier films, a parody of the 1931 film Frankenstein based on Mary Shelley's book of the same name. The story tells of a man who brings his dog back to life after it is killed by a car. »

'30 Rock' star Alec Baldwin to venture into politics?

30 November 2009 8:00 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Actor Alec Baldwin tells Men's Journal he no longer cares to act. "I don't have any interest in acting anymore," Baldwin says in the December issue of Men's Journal. Baldwin adds, "I'm not young, but I have time to do something else." The actor was a scene stealer as Shelly in the 2003 film "The Cooler," and Ellerby in "The Departed," where his intense characters dominated every frame. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "The Cooler." In 1988, Baldwin shot on the scene for me in several films; Tim Burton's "Beetle Juice" and then "Married to the Mob" as Frank the Cucumber, his evil, sexy mobster in the quirky Jonathan Demme film »

Mia Michaels will return to TV

30 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

When Mia Michaels announced that she wouldn't be returning to this season's So You Think You Can Dance, America let out a collective gasp of dismay, because how are we going to know what Tim Burton dreams about if Mia Michaels stops choreographing? Last week, though, Mia spoke to The Wall Street Journal and promised that her routines would continue to enchant/haunt us; the Emmy Award winning choreographer has three TV shows in the works.

Mia told the WSJ:

I can’t go into details about it, but there are three separate shows we’re working on, and all three of them are very different. One is a choreography show, one is a doc-reality show of a stage show that will be touring the states and the third one was inspired by a Web site called "Mia Michaels , Please Choreograph My Life" ... They’re all mine, I’m creating them, »

Babies documentary trailer makes babies look fascinating, and even entertaining

I saw The Fantastic Mr. Fox yesterday, which was decent, but pretty much like every other Wes Anderson film except with incredible stop-motion puppets. In some ways, a trailer that played before it captivated me even more than the film. Actually, two trailers did: for both Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland and a documentary called Babies. Yes, a movie about babies actually grabbed my attention. The documentary, which is directed by Thomas Balmes and will »

Celebrity Biography: Miley Cyrus

30 November 2009 5:58 AM, PST | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Destiny Hope Cyrus was born on November 23, 1992, in Franklin, Tennessee, and is far better known today as Miley Cyrus, pop music sensation, film and television star, and trend-setting teen idol. Her father is the country/pop singer Billy Ray Cyrus and her mother is Leticia Cyrus (called "Tish"), and she's one of six children from both Billy Ray and Leticia, and from her parents' prior relationships. Destiny, the story goes, smiled so much as a child that she earned the nickname Smiley. It eventually stuck...sort of. The "S" fell away and Smiley became Miley. Billy Ray Cyrus had exploded into the public consciousness with his 1992 crossover hit single "Achy Breaky Heart" and the album Some Gave All. His star started to fade soon after, but he continued to plug away and did some acting as well. By 2001, he was headling the popular Pax television show, Doc (TV), a medical »

Wasikowska and Fassbender Join Fukunaga's Version of 'Jane Eyre'

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender are in negotiations to topline the feature which would go into production next year. If they sign up, it'll be a fun shoot with director and actors all hitting a "sweet spot" in their acting careers. Wasikowska's last and current film is with Tim Burton and Gus Van Sant. Not too shabby. - Looks like Focus Features have stuck to Cary Fukunaga like glue. There have been tons of mentions for other projects since Sin Nombre was the talk of the town at Sundance, but his sophomore feature is looking stronger by the minute to be a gothic version of Jane Eyre (the script that was considered among one of the better ones in circulation). James McTeigue Interview, Ninja Assassin

We sat down recently with director James McTeigue to talk about his new film, “Ninja Assassin,” based on a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski, and starring Korean pop star Rain, Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.

As a boy in Sydney, McTeigue was exposed to a variety of world cinema and television and was heavily influenced by ninja television shows like "Shintaro" and "Phantom Agents," and by films such as "Shinobi No Mono." He graduated from Sydney University, where he studied art and film.

McTeigue made his directorial debut helming the iconoclastic screen adaptation of the graphic novel "V for Vendetta." He came to the project through his relationship with the Wachowski brothers, for whom he served as the assistant director on all three "Matrix" films. His other previous film credits as an assistant director include "Speed Racer" and "Dark City. »
