Madonna Wanted Precious

6 November 2009 5:36 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Madonna was almost Mariah Carey's boss on acclaimed new movie Precious - the pop superstar was among the first people to show an interest in adapting author Sapphire's gritty drama into a film.

The writer decided the Material Girl wasn't a good fit and declined her offer to produce the film, about an obese, illiterate teenager.

Sapphire also turned down other interested parties until moviemaker Lee Daniels convinced her he was the right man for the job.

Sapphire tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "There was this really earnest college student with his backpack on who wanted to do his first film, and then Madonna wanted to produce it. I was like, 'Madonna? I don't think this is her film.'"

And the author recalls one potential producer who had his cast all mapped out: "This one producer told me he had found Precious - and it was going to be (singer/actress) Brandy. Excuse me? I literally almost hung up on him."

And then Daniels came along with a cast of friends and the idea of casting Jane Fonda as Precious' social worker. He eventually settled on Helen Mirren and then turned to Carey when the Brit had to quit the project at the last minute. »

No, but you know what I'm saying, kind of like from the gut to sort of-

Mickey Avalon Goes Big With Travis Barker, Dr. Luke On Second Album

29 October 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

It's been a long time since Mickey Avalon was passing out demos at Hollywood nightclubs and scrambling to secure a deal with MySpace Records. If you slept on his self-titled 2006 debut — an insanely profane, gutter-hugging punk rap manifesto featuring the classics "Jane Fonda" and "So Rich, So Pretty" — might I suggest you boost a copy from the cut-out bin of your local used record store? (It's what the old Mickey might have done.)

A few years removed from his more sordid days of street chaos, Avalon has been grinding away on his second album for the past few years, recording more than 70 tracks with a bevy of bold-faced names and a couple of unlikely hotshot producers. Calling in from Los Angeles on Thursday (don't worry, Governator — Mickey's mom was driving the car), Avalon gave a preview of what fans can expect from the tentatively titled Electric Gigolo, which is penciled »

Oscar... Now With More Spirit Fingers

Shankman's got spirit!

Do you follow the Oscar show news in the way you follow the Oscars? I don't so much, despite this life I lead constantly writin' about the awards themselves. I care who hosts to some degree but I tend to ignore the rest. But I found it interesting this week when director Adam Shankman (Hairspray) was named as one of the producers and his choreography skills were noted as a reason to be enthused about this assignment. At least he has a sense of humor about his, um, limited history with the big event I was one of Paula Abdul's 'Under the Sea' pirates," Shankman said. "The last time I was at the Oscars, I was in Lycra, with a pirate hat on. Shankman's presence must mean more musical numbers. I'm all for musical numbers provided they rehire Hugh Jackman as host. He was so fine last year. »

Graham Gets Political

9 October 2009 12:21 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Heather Graham is following in the footsteps of campaigning actresses Angelina Jolie and Jane Fonda and making a stand for a political cause.

The Boogie Nights star is currently in New York City, shooting a new public service announcement for MoveOn.org, reports ExtraTV.com

The organisation is a liberal advocacy group, which raises money for the U.S. Democrat party candidates.

The 39-year-old star was an outspoken supporter of Democrat President Barack Obama ahead of last year's General Election, and even claims a hand in his victory over Republican John McCain.

She said at the time, “I have this group of friends and we get together and we call ourselves The Goddesses and we wish for things and then a lot of amazing things have happened to all of us. We burn things - honouring the elements of earth, wind, air and fire. You do spells. We did this thing where we were calling on the wind and the air and this whole storm started on my roof. It was amazing and… empowering.

“My friends really wanted Obama to be elected so we all did a spell and then he got elected. Worked out good.” »

Cinematical Seven: Therapists and Their Nutty Patients

8 October 2009 8:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

An IMDb search for "therapy" as a plot device in movies will turn up hundreds of titles -- the Woody Allen catalog alone would take weeks to wade through. For some reason, psychological counseling is a well that screenwriters never tire of dipping into, with wildly mixed results. This week's addition to the oeuvre is the Jon Favreau penned Couples Retreat, in which he, Vince Vaughn and their wives take part in a week's vacation that involves time on the couch ... because nothing's funnier than watching bitter, middle-aged people kvetch about how much sex they're not having anymore.

The arguable quality of Couple's Retreat aside, therapy is, when done well, a potentially fascinating hook on which to hang a plot. From asylum-based films like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Girl, Interrupted to stories about the unhinged like What About Bob? and Don Juan DeMarco, there's a daunting list »

Forget It Bob, It’S Chinatown

Robert Towne looks back on Chinatown’s 35th anniversary

By

Alex Simon

The haunting trumpet wailing plaintively over the closing credits. The bandage covering star Jack Nicholson’s nose. The best last line of a movie, ever: “Forget it, Jake. It’s Chinatown"; all elements of a film now regarded by scholars, critics and cinefiles alike as one of the greatest pieces of American celluloid ever made. Chinatown was a collaboration between a who’s-who of ‘70s film icons. Directed by Roman Polanski, produced by Robert Evans, written by Robert Towne, starring Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, shot by John Alonso, and scored by Jerry Goldsmith, Chinatown was nominated for 11 Academy Awards in 1974, but brought home only one: for its writer. Robert Towne was barely 40, and Chinatown his first produced original screenplay, his previous efforts having been literary adaptations, such as 1973’s The Last Detail. »
