The National Board of Review has named Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air as the top film of 2009. The New-York based organization is traditionally the first to announce their picks for the year’s best and they like the Paramount picture starring George Clooney, which conveniently opens this weekend in limited release.
Aside from best feature, the film won three other awards. Clooney picked up best actor in a tie with Morgan Freeman of Invictus, supporting actress went to Anna Kendrick, and Reitman received kudos for the adapted screenplay (my favorite script).
Other notables: Clint Eastwood was recognized as the best director for Invictus (Nbr liked him last year for Gran Torino), Carey Mulligan for best actress in An Education, and documentary front-runner The Cove won. The biggest surprises were Woody Harrelson winning best supporting actor for The Messenger and Star Trek on their top 10 of the year. Don’t get me wrong, »

The National Board of Review have announced their winners. Their ceremony will be held on.
Film: Up In The Air
Director: Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Actor (tie): Morgan Freeman, Invictus and George Clooney, Up In The Air
This is Clooney's 3rd personal Nbr prize in 7 years. The situation with Clint Eastwood is yet more extreme. This is Clint's 4th personal Nbr prize in 10 years. Every film he's made since 2003 has found a home in their top ten list -- all seven of them, even Flags of Our Fathers -- and in two of those year's his films hogged 20% of their top ten list. In addition to Clint's 4 prizes, 2 of his films have won their Best Picture prize.
Actress: Carey Mulligan, An Education
Supporting Actor: Woody Harrelson, The Messenger

"Up in the Air" was named best picture from the National Board of Review and won a total of four awards.Directed by Jason Reitman ("Juno," "Thank You for Smoking"), the film stars George Clooney as a perpetually traveling contractor who fires people for a living. The National Board of Review, which announced its awards Thursday, also chose Clooney as best actor, an honor he shares with Morgan Freeman who plays Nelson Mandela in "Invictus.""Up in the Air" also won best supporting actress for Anna Kendrick and best adapted screenplay, penned by Reitman and Sheldon Turner working from Walter Kirn's book of the same name.Already an Oscar favorite, the win boosts the awards prospects of "Up in the Air," which opens Friday. The 2009 Oscar race is officially Up in the Air. The George Clooney vehicle about love in the age of layoffs has become one of the Oscar front-runners after being named best picture by the National Board of Review on Thursday. Clooney shared a win for best actor with Morgan Freeman, who won for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Invictus, directed by his longtime collaborator Clint Eastwood, who was named best director. British newcomer Carey Mulligan was named best actress for playing a precocious teen in An Education, while The Messenger's Woody Harrelson and Air's Anna Kendrick were recognized for their supporting performances. »

Hey there, my prediction came true, and perhaps this gut feeling I have about Jason Reitman's Up In the Air is accurate as the National Board of Review just named the Paramount pic the best film of 2009.
Continuing its reign, George Clooney also won Best Actor in a shared prize with Morgan Freeman who stars in Invictus as Nelson Mandela, and my current pic to win the Oscar Best Actress, Carey Mulligan, took top honors in the Best Actress category for An Education.
Anna Kendrick continued the Up In the Air love with a Best Supporting Actress win and Reitman was also recognized for Best Adapted Screenplay.
However, Eastwood maintained his Nbr presence with a Best Director win as well as seeing Invictus get listed as one of the top ten films of the year alongside the likes of Star Trek, Where the Wild Things Are, Inglourious Basterds and 500 Days of Summer. »

The National Board of Review has chosen Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air as the Best Picture of 2009, but as Anne Thompson states, the National Board of Review tends to be a bellwether of where Oscar momentum is heading, but not necessarily a forecaster of where it will be. However, it’s a near-certainty that Up in the Air will be getting some Oscar nominations because not only is it in the zeitgeist (the main character Ryan Bingham fires people for a living), but it’s just a damn good film and critics agree with an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes (look for my review tonight). If you’d like a track record for the Nbr, its Best Picture choice has gone on to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar nine of the past ten years (their selection of Quills in 2000 was a swing and a miss), and won the award the past two years. »

Earlier this week, the Gotham Awards kicked off award season, with the nominations for the Indie Spirit awards following shortly after. And today, we have our next round of honors and for the most part, the first major awards to be handed out. The National Board of Review -- an institution that is quite proud of its ability to predict (in a sense) the Oscar Best Picture winner (at least recently) -- has named Jason Reitman's latest film Up in the Air as the Best Film of 2009. As well, they've honored Clint Eastwood with a nod for Best Director (Invictus), split the Best Actor nod between George Clooney (Up in the Air) and Morgan Freeman (Invictus), and giving rising star Carey Mulligan her first award of the season, Best Actress for her performance in An Education. For Paramount, the love for Up in the Air couldn't have come at a better time. The »

For the past two years in a row, the National Board of Review (aka Nbr) and the Academy Awards have each honored the same film as their top pick of the year. Will that streak now continue with Jason Reitman's Up in the Air? Paramount couldn't have picked a better release date for Up in the Air because 24 hours after the film was named best of the year by Nbr, it will arrive in theaters in limited release. Aside from taking top honors, Reitman's film about a corporate downsizer who can't seem to connect with anything (or anyone) also won Best Adapted Screenplay (Jason Reitman, Sheldon Turner) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Kendrick).
Other big winners include Clint Eastwood for Best Director (Invictus), Morgan Freeman for Best Actor (Invictus), Carey Mulligan for Best Actress (An Education) and Woody Harrelson for Best Supporting Actor (The Messenger). The Cove, which is »

I firmly believe Zombieland was one of the best films of 2009. It simply came out of nowhere, defied expectations, and even went so far as to inspire some of us. Given the films success it’s no surprise that a sequel would be on the horizon. Now, Variety is able to confirm that a sequel is in development and chances are it will be in 3D:
“Everyone had fun watching (the first) ‘Zombieland’; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better,” said the film’s producer Gavin Polone. “I don’t think you want to see ‘Ordinary People’ in 3-D. But ‘Zombieland’ is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique).”
Now, I’ve never been sold on the whole 3D thing. Personally, I think it’s a gimmick and haven’t gone out of my way to see any recent 3D films. Simply put, I »

Now that Woody Harrelson ("The Messenger") has been pushed up to the lead race from supporting at the Globes, that changes the category scenario a bit. Co-star Ben Foster remains a contender, but Woody upstages him here just like he does in the film. Best Drama Actor Front-runners Jeff Bridges, "Crazy Heart" George Clooney, "Up in the Air" Colin Firth, "A Single Man" Morgan Freeman, "Invictus" Woody Harrelson, "The Messenger" Viggo Mortensen, "The Road" Michael Sheen, "The Damned United" Spotlight: Everybody's talking about how overdue Jeff Bridges is for an Oscar (four defeats), but he's also Globe-less (skunked three times). Bridges must beat beloved George Clooney, who won for "Syriana" at the Globes first, then... »

In the least shocking news of the day, Sony Pictures will be moving forward with a sequel to Zombieland with one major difference between that and the original: the new one will be 3D.
“Everyone had fun watching Zombieland; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better,” said the film’s producer Gavin Polone. “I don’t think you want to see Ordinary People in 3-D. But Zombieland is clearly one movie that will benefit from [the technology].”
The studio is currently in talks with Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg to reprise their roles, while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are working on the sequel’s screenplay.
Wernick spoke to MTV in October about the possibility of a follow-up to Zombieland.
“It has lived in our heads for four-and-a-half years,” Wernick said about a Zombieland 2. “We developed it and wrote it as a spec TV pilot in the summer »

Imagine that! Roland Emmerich did another epic end-of-the-world flick, starring semi-respectable actors, and boasting a huge budget! Doesn't this schtick get old Mr. Emmerich?
2012 features a paper thin plot about crazy solar flares in the few years leading up to the year 2012 that somehow turn the neutrinos in the Earth's core into microwaves that slowly, but steadily start heating up the planet. This results in earthquakes, tsunamis, sink-holes and other natural disasters. It's all pretty dehumanized until these things start to affect Jackson (John Cusack) and Kate (Amanda Peet), a divorced couple with two kids. Oh, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a bleeding heart, government geologist who advises the president (Danny Glover) on all this, and eventually (spoiler alert! »

Confirming Internet reports, Sony Pictures has closed deals with director Ruben Fleischer, producer Gavin Polone, and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick for a sequel to Zombieland.
During the Thanksgiving holiday lull, Moviehole spoke with Fleischer about his plans for the inevitable Zombieland 2, who told the site he had ideas for 3-D but they were waiting on the go ahead from Sony. They’ve been given the green light and the brainstorming begins.
When the creative team talked sequels following the smash opening, the writers said they had originally conceived the story as a TV pilot, so the series lends itself to another zombie-killing adventure. No details on the plot are known yet, but hopefully they won’t transform Woody Harrelson into a self-aware zombie or any sort of disappointing variation.
The original cast, Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, are ready to return. Sadly Bill Murray will »
