If you've been paying any attention to the news this past few days, then you know that last Thursday an Army psychiatrist fatally shot 12 people and wounded 31 at Fort Hood in Texas. Since the beginning of the Iraq invasion in 2003, 75 Fort Hood soldiers have killed themselves. Nine of them committed suicide this year. Moreover, Army suicides have increased by 37% since 2006. In light of recent events, the release of the film The Messenger, starring Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson, on November 13, could not be more timely.
The Messenger opens with Ben Foster (Pandorum, X-Men: The Last Stand, Alpha Dog) applying medicinal drops to one of his eyes. His character, Staff Sergeant Will Montgomery, has recently returned home from a tour of duty and one of his eyes was damaged during combat in Iraq. Other than a small scar beneath the eye, he shows no other outward physical injuries but, sullen and quick-tempered, »

2012 is one of those strange movies where you feel like you shouldn’t like it but cant help yourself enjoying and even sometimes laughing at the world’s destruction, either because of it’s slightly cheesy and humorous script or because the effects are so darn good that it just looks fantastic.
If you’ve not been following the story on HeyUGuys previously, 2012 is a story, in a nutshell, about the end of the world. I’m going to try and write this review with zero spoilers but I’ll warn you before I say anything close to one.
In the movie, there are two sets of main characters, the first is led by Oliver Platt and Chiwetel Ejiofor as the government scientists who spot that disaster is going to occur in 2009. The other group are a family led by John Cusack who is struggling to come to terms with the divorce from his wife, »

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying Independence Day was a big movie, with a place in cinematic history. Roland Emmerich has been the prince of diminishing returns since, but remains the current king of the global disaster movie. With next week’s 2012, he’s hoping to get his career back on track.
10,000 BC was universally panned, so he has decided to go back to what he does best. Namely, destroying contemporary landmarks, and killing a large percentage of the population. Emmerich loves himself a budget, and epic scale CGI, and judging from the trailer, he has used both liberally. There have been plenty of pre-release clips to encourage the hype. You can see a five minute clip in full HD here, some additional clips here, and some behind the scenes footage here.
As usual, however, there is a human story to be told. In this case, it »

Probably The spectacle movie of 2009 is going to end up being Roland Emmerich’s latest big-budget disaster flick, 2012, which focuses on the Mayan prophecy that the world will end in December of the year 2012. The $200 million, special-effects laden, film stars the likes of John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton and Danny Glover, and is set to crash into theaters in a week’s time.
However, with a film of this size, you know the buck rarely stops at one. In this case, Emmerich is already looking ahead at making more out of his latest disaster tale. Recently news surfaced that there was a 2012 sequel spin-off TV series in the works (yes, they’re thinking about furthering this seemingly finite disaster story). But wait, how can there be a sequel, in any form, of 2012… isn’t it supposed to be about the end of the world? That’s what I thought, »

-- It's been awhile, but I'm back with a look at what's going on Around the Blogosphere. First up for today is something from my good pal Jordan Hoffman at Ugo. Hoffman has seen "2012" and he's not able to say much about it, but he did step up to confirm one fact: Woody Harrelson's character does indeed speak the words "Download my blog" during the movie. The thought over at Ugo is that this should be the next great meme, something to replace the still-reigning "Chaos reigns" from director Lars Von Trier's genital-mutilating art-horror flick "Antichrist." Go check out what Jordan has to say; he explains it far better than I do. (Ugo)
-- Next up I have the greatest photo gallery of all time to share with you. It is called "Stormtroopers 365." It is (or will be, when it's done) 365 images of Imperial Stormtroopers and other "Star Wars »

Direct Roland Emmerich is back up to his old tricks with his latest sci-fi thriller 2012. Based on the prophecies of the Mayan Calendar, the world is coming to an end in this destruction-filled epic. We recently paid a visit to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming to talk with Emmerich and his cast, as well as a couple of 2012 experts. To find out more about this fantastic new film, watch as John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Emmerich himself, as well as authors John Major Jenkins, Lawernce E. Joseph, and Daniel Pinchbeck reveal all in our exclusive video featurette. Click on the clip below to watch now:
Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. 2012 is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors. »

Movies making the leap to TV is not a new nor particularly novel phenomenon. Just in recent months, we’ve reported on a number of such schemes (see Related Content, right). But this one’s different, as the movie being touted to make the transition hasn’t even opened in cinemas yet. We’re talking about 2012, the doomsday blockbuster starring John Cusack (who’s been pretty quiet of late), Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton and, hot off his turn in Zombieland, Woody Harrelson. It’s not released until next Friday, 13th November and yet when interviewed by Entertainment Weekly at the film’s premiere; director Roland Emmerich was full of these future plans. Maybe he reckons he has to churn it out quickly, what with the world ending in 2012. »

Columbia Pictures recently released two more clips from the upcoming disaster movie, 2012. These clips, while not as long as the five minute clip we previously posted, still have yet to show anything that makes me feel like this film will be anything more than a money-grab at the end of the world. (Which, I guess, would be the perfect time to do it).
In the first clip we find a zombie-free Woody Harrelson playing “crazy” internet blogger Charlie Frost who knows everything there is to know about the end of the world and warns Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) that, in typical movie fashion, the destruction will start in Hollywood, California. (It’s movies like this that always make me feel better about living in Michigan. So far it looks like I’m surviving Independence Day and when Skynet becomes self-aware on Judgement Day).
In the second clip we find the »

It may sound rather odd, but Woody Harrelson's name is being tossed around for an Oscar for his role as a Us Army captain in the Iraq war drama The Messenger (it opens in NYC on November 13).
What sounds even more odd is that in an interview with the Village Voice's Aaron Hillis, Harrelson politely declined an offer to get high.
You're the only interviewee I've ever thought to ask, but: Would you like to smoke a joint?
Oh! The problem is I have to do some more interviews. I honestly would love to, but I can't do interviews stoned. Sometimes, it can open you up to do great creative things, and sometimes, it's a situation . . . like, I can't act that way. It absolutely freezes me. I can't do a talk show because it goes into the paranoia side. Yeah, I better not. That's a generous offer, but I should be on my game. »

Two weeks shy of its theatrical debut in the U.S., "2012 (2009)" went to downtown Los Angeles for its premiere. On Tuesday, November 3, black carpet was rolled out and a scene of destruction complete with a car crashing through a wall was built up in front of Regal Cinemas La Live to greet the oncoming celebrities.
Many of the cast members were seen joining the festivity on the special evening. Amanda Peet, John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt and Danny Glover were only some of them spotted. Two of its young actors, Liam James and Morgan Lily who played Noah and Lilly Curtis, were present as well.
The man behind the global disaster movie, director/produce/writer Roland Emmerich, also didn't miss out the special screening. He came in accompanied by his producer sister Ute Emmerich. Additionally, season 8 runner-up of "American Idol" as well as the singer »

There’s something slightly odd about a former Israeli army officer making a movie about broken American veterans of the war in Iraq. But that’s just what The Messenger is. The film is Oren Moverman’s directorial debut and is currently in competition at Sundance.
The story follows Will (Ben Foster), a decorated war hero that came home with a purple heart for saving some friends during an attack in some nameless Iraqi city. Although he’s sent back to the states, he still has a few months left of service. His superior assigns him to the task force in charge of informing the next of kin of soldiers’ deaths within twenty four hours of the event. »

We've already explored the history of 2012 here on Cinematical and what you need to know to see the movie (hint: the world might blow up!), but here's what 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, and Woody Harrelson and director Roland Emmerich have to say about the end of the world. Do they believe the world will end with a whimper or a bang, T. S. Eliot-style? Will we go out in fire or in ice? Do they even believe the world will end in 2012? Let's find out.
Roland Emmerich: It's always great if you find some sort of belief people have and put it in your movies, as fantastic as they may be. For example, Independence Day, I used Area 51 and centered my whole story around Area 51 because I found out in my research that people really believed in it. And in this movie, as we discovered the phenomenon of 2012, because some culture, »

Some of us at Movieline tried something a little different this year for Halloween: We found our inner Mariah, our outer Galifianakis, or we just traveled down as ourselves to the Savannah Film Festival. As hipsters from the nearby Savannah College of Art and Design swarmed the streets with go-cups and costumes of their own, the 12th annual event opened with a screening of The Messenger featuring stars Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster in attendance. Oren Moverman's drama (opening Nov. 20) chronicles the homefront grief of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through the relationship of two Army casualty-notification officers -- heart-hardened Tony Stone (Harrelson) and sensitive Iraq veteran Will Montogomery (Foster) -- as they stoically alert people that their sons, daughters, husbands and wives have died overseas.
It was sobering, intense stuff for the holiday, lightened up a bit afterward by a Harrelson/Foster Q&A-session, complete with a hand-mic sword fight. »

It’s the holidays. We know this because the movies tell us so. This year they waited exactly one week after Halloween to start the Christmas fare with Jim Carrey’s A Christmas Carol. But even though the month starts with Christmas, the movie month plays out just like Thanksgiving.
At first, we’re given an array of wonderful treats that’s we’ll happily gobble up like George Clooney in The Men Who Stare at Goats or George Clooney in the stop-motion Wes Anderson movie Fantastic Mr. Fox. Plus, teenage girls and a few others, will have their vampire appetites filled with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. But then, just like Thanksgiving, you gorge a little too much. And even though you’re full, you look around for something more to eat … and that’s when Old Dogs seems to be your only option.

As Roland Emmerich prepares to end the world in a cascade of disasters for 2012, some true believers are complaining that he's putting too negative a spin on what could be key date in human evolution.
According to Everything Long Beach, twenty-eight cities around the globe are hosting "counter-screenings" to explore the positive transformations that might be expected when the Mayan calendar runs out of days on December 21, 2012. The unlikely title of these conferences is a nod to Dr. Strangelove — 2012: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Dimensional Shift.
Not that moviemakers mind, of course. Not only was this sort of speculation about 2012 a source of inspiration for the movie, the studio is even funding junkets for one of its chief prophets. New York Magazine reports that, as part of its attempts to heighten the buzz around the movie, the studio is providing financial backing for a conference »
