The furious way that the beautiful free flowing style which Terrence Malick has curated over his career is talked about often disguises the fact that he has made just four features and one (some people say two), rare as hens teeth, shorts. So, after only a hand full of features in 37 years what is it about the director that has celluloid lovers chomping at the bit. Until very recently there were only 2 published interviews with the modest director in existence and only a handful of photographs. His stubbornness with the press is legendary. His Tom Sawyer like trademark themes of innocents somehow lost within harsh mother nature, the beautifully paced editing and pitch perfect scores, his poetic and naturalistic voice overs and consistently jaw dropping cinematography has helped the film maker achieve a level of awe and mystery perhaps only reserved on a comparable level for one Stanley Kubrick. One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

Forbes has announced its list of the 10 most overpaid stars in Hollywood! According to the magazine, "to create our list, we looked at the 100 biggest stars in Hollywood. To qualify, each actor had to have starred over the last five years in at least three movies that opened in more than 500 theaters."
They then "calculated a return-on-investment number for each star by dividing total operating income on the three films by the star's total compensation, including up-front salaries and earnings from DVD and TV sales."
Pretty scientific? Maybe, maybe not. But it's certainly interesting! To read the full article, click here, otherwise here's the Top 10 Most Overpaid Stars in Hollywood:
1. Will Ferrell -- "For every $1 Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29."
2. Ewan McGregor -- "For every $1 McGregor earned in a starring role his films brought in an average $3.75."
3. Billy Bob Thornton -- "For every $1 Thornton was paid, his »

The 'Elf' actor and comedian topped the annual list by Forbes magazine, which calculated how much moviemakers earn per dollar paid to their lead actor.
After the last couple of funnyman Will's films - 'Semi-Pro' and 'Land of the Lost' - bombed at the box office, his rate of return has dropped to $3.29 for every dollar of Will's fee. This contrasts greatly with the other end of the scale, which saw Shia Labeouf named as the Best Actor for the Buck in August, earning studios an average of $160 for every dollar he was paid. Behind Will on the Most Overpaid list was British actor Ewan McGregor, while Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson all made the top ten. However, Will could turn his box office figures around as he recently revealed he wants to make a sequel to 'Anchorman', one of his most successful films to date, »

Comic actor Will Ferrell has the dubious distinction of heading a new Forbes magazine list of Hollywood's most overpaid stars. A top-ten list also includes (in order): Ewan McGregor, Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy, Ice Cube, Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel Jackson, and Jim Carrey. All of them, said the magazine on its website Wednesday, "cost more to hire than they appear to be worth at box offices." Ferrell ended up at the top of the list, it said, largely because of the flop Land of the Lost, a movie that cost about $100 million to produce, but which earned less than $65 million worldwide. Based on his estimated salary for each film, Forbes concluded that for every dollar Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average of just $3.29. »

True to tradition, Forbes magazine has published a new list, this time focusing on revenues generated by Hollywood stars in relation to their salaries over the past 5 years. At the top of the list of overpaid actors, Will Ferrell brings in only $3.29 for each dollar he earns, followed by Ewan McGregor, whose lack of refinement in his choice of projects since "Stars Wars: Episode III" limits his return on investment to 375%. Also on the list are Billy Bob Thornton, Drew Barrymore Leonardo DiCaprio and Jim Carrey. On the other end of the scale is Shia Labeouf, with $160 for each dollar he earns, followed by Robert Downey Jr. and Christian Bale - the most bankable stars since 20... »

Will Ferrell and Ewan McGregor on Wednesday headed a Forbes.com list of Hollywood’s most overpaid stars when looking at the financial returns of their movies.
Ferrell tops the list of stars who cost more than their movies do, taking in one dollar for every $3.29 his films make. According to Forbes, “Land of the Lost” cost an estimated $US100 million to make but earned just $US65 million at box offices worldwide for movie studio Universal Pictures. The movie followed a disappointing $US43 million box office for Ferrell’s 2008 outing “Semi-Pro“, and $US128 million for “Step Brothers.”
No. 2 on the overpaid actors list is Ewan McGregor (I Love You Phillip Morris, Angels & Demons, The Men Who Stare at Goats, Amelia), who made a slew of poorly performing movies after playing Obi-Wan Kenobi four years ago in “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith.” McGregor’s films earned $3.75 per dollar he was paid. »

Funnyman Will Ferrell is laughing all the way to the bank - he's Hollywood's Most Overpaid Star, according to a new Forbes magazine list.
The Elf star's recent box office bombs have put him at the top of the annual list, with Forbes researchers estimating his films earn just $3.29 (£2) for every dollar he takes home.
Ewan McGregor is second on the new countdown - his films earn $3.75 (£2.35) for every dollar in his pocket.
Billy Bob Thornton, Eddie Murphy and Ice Cube round out the top five overpaid stars, while Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson and Jim Carrey are namechecked in the top 10.
On the other end of the scale, Shia Labeouf has been named Forbes' Best Actor for the Buck - for every dollar he pockets for a film, his movies earn an average of $160 (£100). »

Forbes' annual list of Hollywood's Most Overpaid Stars has just been unveiled, witnessing comedian Will Ferrell placed on its very top spot. The flop of the 42-year-old star's film "Land of the Lost" in the box office takes part in landing him on the particular position.
And the magazine has this to write about the actor, "Ferrell is one of the few 'Saturday Night Live' stars to achieve real movie fame, thanks to films like 'Elf' and 'Talladega Nights'. The success of those comedies bumped up Ferrell's paycheck, but recently that has hurt his return-on-investment number. This summer's 'Land of the Lost' flopped, earning only $65 million on an estimated budget of $100 million." Besides, "For every $1 Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29."
Securing the second position is Ewan McGregor. "Although he appeared as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the three new 'Star Wars' films, »

Every year the folks over at Forbes put together a fun little list of the most overpaid actors in Hollywood. It's fun because it's a chance for people to call out some of the big shots who earn a lot of money but fail to deliver massive box office success. Not surprisingly, at the top of the list this year is Will Ferrell, a funny guy experiencing a fair bit of backlash right now, thanks in large part to the dud that was Land of the Lost (hey, I actually liked it). In order to create this list, they compared actor's earnings versus the budgets and profits from their most recent films, and looked for the lowest return. Since it might be unfair to penalize actors for doing smaller art house films, they only take into account movies that opened in at least 500 theatres. They also only chose actors who »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.
Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

The Oscar-winning actress – who already has three adopted children, as well as three biological ones, with partner Brad Pitt – has reportedly started the process to bring home a baby girl from the Asian country. However, Brad is said to not be keen on the idea but an undeterred Angelina began the proceedings on her own. A source said: “He has made it clear that six children are more than he can handle. The idea of one more seemed ludicrous, but Angie is determined to complete her rainbow family.” A spokesman for the Immigration and Naturalisation Service in Washington D.C. confirmed that “only Angelina's name was on the adoption papers.” Angelina adopted her eldest son Maddox – now eight – from Cambodia in 2001, while she was still married to second husband Billy Bob Thornton, but was legally his only parent. After splitting from Billy, she went on to adopt Zahara from Ethiopia »

Not even Brad Pitt can stop Angelina Jolie from expanding her "rainbow" family, if Ok! magazine is to be trusted. The publication recently brought up the story in its newest issue which will go on sale in the U.S. Thursday, November 12, stating that the Academy Award-winning actress will move forth with her plan of adopting a baby from Syria, although her long-term partner isn't quite ready for it.
Ok! went on to report that her determination to "have more kids - one way or another" has caused a clash between her and the "Inglourious Basterds" star. "He has made it clear that six children are more than he can handle," an insider told the magazine. "The idea of one more seemed ludicrous, but Angie is determined to complete her rainbow family."
Should the story is true, it won't be the first time Angie legally adopted a child by herself. »

A clutch of new films will cement Matt Damon's reputation as the hit of his generation. But that won't change this most reserved and politically committed of actors. Vanessa Thorpe reports
Runners taking part in the annual Miami Triathlon this time last year were surprised to spot a familiar face crossing the finishing line. It looked very like Jason Bourne, the implacable, brain-washed hitman, who was coming in with a time of just under an hour for the 6.2 mile leg. In fact Matt Damon, who plays Bourne in the trio of hit films based on Robert Ludlum's character, was competing in an effort to lose some weight. He had gained 30lbs that summer to play the part of the chubby, delusional executive at the centre of The Informant!, Steven Soderbergh's new film.
Its recent premiere in America may well prove the high-water mark of an already illustrious career. »

Michael Jackson’s This Is It topped the box office over the Halloween weekend with an estimated $21 million. The concert film has made $32 million in the Us in the five days since it opened. It’s an okay start for the movie, but not the huge debut that Sony was hoping for. It’s doing twice as well overseas and has brought in about $100Mm worldwide so far.
Paranormal Activity scared-up another $16.5 million over the spooky weekend giving the $11, 000 budgeted film a mind-boggling $84.7 million total. Ka-ching!
Law Abiding Citizen banked another $7 million to give the Gerard Butler/ Jamie Foxx flick a solid $51 million.

The action star directs this one-of-a-kind rock and roll hostage thriller
Dolph Lundgren has directed, maybe not the best film of the year, but certainly one of the coolest, strangest, funniest fuck-em-up hostage thrillers seen in (at least) the last five years. Not one to take himself or his image too seriously, Command Performance is a tour de force that proves the legendary muscle man (who first made his appearance known in Rocky IV as Russian boxer Ivan Drago) still has what it takes to decimate a room full of heavily armed bad guys. Its no lie when I say Command Performance is hands down the most fun you'll have with any action movie being released this year. It earns 2009's Mega-Awesome Achievement Award simply for having the balls to pull off many scenes like the one below:
