Blu-Ray Review: ‘Shorts’ Long On Comic Chaos, Short On Charm

8 hours ago | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Robert Rodriguez is a one-man moviemaking machine. He’s always looking for the fastest and most cost-effective ways for getting his work out to the public. His success story, memorably chronicled in the book “Rebel Without a Crew,” is genuinely inspiring, yet his films often fail to resonate as anything other than exercises in design. In his latest film, he comes up with two multi-purpose objects (a man-made product, “the black box,” and a magical “wishing rock”) that can do pretty much anything his characters want them to do. They represent the central problem in Rodriguez’s work: he seems to think that since digital filmmaking can allow him to do anything, he should, without ever thinking it through.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Thus, the public is treated to a shapeless, rambling bore like “Shorts,” which feels like it was slapped together in Rodriguez’s garage. Its story is told out »

Nimrod Antal Discusses His 'Predators' Vision

1 December 2009 2:25 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Some readers might be under a misconception regarding the upcoming Robert RodriguezPredators: namely, who the director is. Despite his name being prominently featured in the title, it’s not Rodriguez who’s in the director’s chair. Rather, it’s Nimrod Antal, perhaps best known for the 2007 suspense film Vacancy.

Predators is due out next summer, but until then, Antal has another movie set to hit theaters: the crime thriller Armored starring Matt Dillon, Lawrence Fishburne and Jean Reno. Meanwhile, his debut feature Kontrol was a comedy thriller set on the Budapest Metro.

The fact that none of his other films was particularly special effects-driven might make Antal seem an odd fit for Predators. But in an interview with ComingSoon.net, Antal said he and Rodriguez were able to find a happy medium, despite his preference for doing things in-camera and the latter’s reliance on CG animation. »

[DVD Review] Shorts

1 December 2009 1:00 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When he isn’t skulking around the dark and blood-splattered alleyways of the Mexican underworld, director Robert Rodriguez runs a nice, profitable sideline in garish, high-energy kid flicks. A quick Read of his resume: Spy Kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lava Girl, Planet Terror, Shorts, and next up Machette, can give the impression the helmer is the ultimate proponent of the “one for them, one for me” school of filmmaking. Except, of course, they’re all for him. Once again he cheerfully does the whole shebang; writer, producer, handling the score, overseeing the effects, presumably on a diet of enough sugar to single-handedly raise the Gdp of Brazil. Perhaps he just likes the change of pace.

With that in mind this is yet another high-concept, pre-teen wish-fulfillment fantasy that finds the corporate controlled suburb of Black Falls thrown into colorful CGI chaos when »

Nimród Antal Explains Casting Adrien Brody in Predators

1 December 2009 4:23 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When producer Robert Rodriguez declared his new film Predators a direct sequel to Predator (and ignoring Predator 2), many were expecting the sort of beefy cast that was assembled for the 1987 original. So, when it was first announced that Academy Award-winning actor Adrien Brody was cast in the lead role, the reactions of fans and critics were not overwhelmingly positive.

One of the more scathing responses to the news came from Jarett Wieselman of The New York Post who wrote: If I was combing through a crowd of actors for one I could trust to get me to the chopper, I'd blow right past Adrien Brody and keep holding out for a hero.

In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Predators director Nimród Antal explained his decision to cast Brody by saying that he wanted his soldiers to look more authentic than the original's cast.

I think when we cast Adrian, »

‘Predators’ Director Defends Adrien Brody Pick

30 November 2009 9:55 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Nimród Antal is in the middle of shooting Predators for 20th Century Fox and producer Robert Rodriguez, but the director recently took the time to do a phone interview promoting his third movie, Armored.

ComingSoon was able to ask about this weekend’s release and squeezed a few details about the Predator franchise relaunch due out July 2010.

Aside from the Hungarian name, the filmmaker has taken some flack for casting Oscar-winner Adrien Brody in the lead for the next in a series accustomed to the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Here’s what Antal had to say in his own defense.  “It was a challenge in finding a balance. I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. »

Nimród Antal on casting Adrian Brody in Predators

30 November 2009 4:08 PM, PST | Filmonic.com | See recent Filmonic news »

It was a bit surprising to learn that Adrian Brody had been cast as the lead in Robert Rodriguez’s Predators as he isn’t really known as the action type, however I guess that could be one of the reasons he went for the part. The guy is an Oscar winner so there’s no question he [...] »

A Glimpse at the Predators' Home World

30 November 2009 4:06 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Every time we get to do another story on Nimrod Antal's semi-reboot of the Predator franchise, Predators, which is being produced by Robert Rodriguez, we get a little more excited. If only because neither Paul Anderson nor the dark duo of the Brothers Strause have anything to do with it. Ready for a quick look at where our favorite hunters call home?

Texas' Kngb News reports today that Troublemaker Studios recently used Canyon Lake Gorge in Texas as a backdrop for Predators, adding that the location will be used as a portion of the Predators' home planet in 20th Century Fox's Predator reboot of sorts that will be arriving in theaters July 9th, 2010.

"Specifically, they went to a spot that 10 years ago didn’t exist, but after the flood of 2001, when water went over the spillway at Canyon Lake, a huge gorge was cut out of the landscape, and »

Predators Director Defends Adrien Brody Casting

30 November 2009 1:20 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

There was a lot of speculation about who would be cast as the lead in Predators, the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimród Antal-directed follow up to the classic John McTiernan / Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick Predator. (Do I really have to spell all that out? Probably not.) When Adrien Brody was announced, more than a few people (including me) went, 'huh?' Now, for the first time since the project began, Antal is talking about the film and his casting choices. Speaking to ComingSoon, Antal says of Brody: "I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going; 'What?' But at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that...He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, »

'Predators' Director Nimrod Antal Defends Adrien Brody Casting

30 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that "Predators" is actually happening, especially when names like Robert Rodriguez, Nimrod Antal and Danny Trejo are thrown into the mix. But it's happening. Heck, it's already started.

Antal, the director of "Predators" and this weekend's "Armored," spoke with Coming Soon about the project recently and revealed that shooting has already occurred in Hawaii.

In the interview, Antal defended the controversial casting of Adrien Brody as the film's lead, which some fans reacted against due to the actor's lean physique — a far cry from the Arnold Schwarzenegger of yesteryear.

"Again, it was a challenge in finding a balance," he said. "I think when we cast [Adrien], there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. »

Jcvd Director Adapts Graphic Novel The Insiders; Jessica Alba Still Attached

30 November 2009 11:19 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Back in June, we told you that Robert Rodriguez and Jessica Alba had optioned The Insiders, a French spy thriller comic book series featuring a female lead character that definitely harkens back to Alba's career-originating turn on the series Dark Angel. At that point the whole thing was just a rights option with Rodriguez set to produce. Now there's a director, and one that makes the whole package a little more intriguing: Jcvd helmer Mabrouk el Mechri. Pajiba reports that el Mechri is on board -- what, you thought there was ever a chance that Rodriguez would direct this one? Expect to see a lot more of this sort of producer action from the guy, especially if Predators does well. He's very much in a position to transition into the sort of producer that can enable less-established directors who do interesting or fan-pleasing work. Jcvd was most definitely fan-pleasing. I »

Nimrod Antal on picking Adrien Brody for ‘Predators’ lead: “turned out fantastic”

30 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Adrien Brody is not what most people think of when words like “action hero,” “bad ass” or “cool” are thrown around. But maybe it should?

Brody, along with a cadre of other stars, is cast in the upcoming Predators film from Robert Rodriguez protege Nimród Antal. The director sounded off on the controversial pick for the film’s lead and tells readers that this is the face of the new hero. Wanting a muscle-bound “Ah-nuld?” Get with the times!

“I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that,” Antal claimed. “So we decided early on to go in a very different direction as far as the casting process, but it turned out fantastic.”

The Return of Jessica Alba?

30 November 2009 10:32 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Sure, some would suggest that Jessica Alba really can't return to form since there never was a form to begin with. But there definitely was a time when Alba was an "It" girl -- the type to grace numerous magazine covers and star in big, flashy films like Sin City and The Fantastic Four. But then her star began to fade as she clumsily starred in one cruddy flick after another (Into the Blue, Good Luck Chuck, The Eye, Awake, The Love Guru), and with other, more sensational young actresses attempting to make their mark in Hollywood, Alba sort of fell by the wayside.

But now the gal has positioned herself with a few pretty interesting upcoming projects, including two produced by Robert Rodriguez (Machete, The Insiders), one that's based on a very good novel (An Invisible Sign of My Own) and one that finds the actress taking things farther »

Nimrod Antal Promises Guy in Suit Predator, Explains Adrien Brody Casting

30 November 2009 9:48 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Nimrod Antal has got a lot going against him. For one, his name is Nimrod. Seriously, can you imagine the pounding the poor guy must have taken in school? I don’t even want to think about it. Secondly, he’s already knee-deep in shooting “Predators”, the long-awaited sequel to the “Predator” franchise, with Robert Rodriguez producing, and fanboys are tad squeamish about everything they’ve heard about the movie so far. Talking with Comingsoon, Antal explained his casting of Adrian Brody (a move that resulted in a collective, “What the Eff????” from fans everywhere, I would imagine), and promises that the Predator in “Predators” will indeed by a guy in a suit. On casting Brody as a the leading man: “I think when we cast Adrian, there were a lot of people going, ‘What?’ but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or »

Moviegoers expecting a clash between vampires and ninjas at the box office this weekend witnessed a surprising development as the greatest competition facing "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" wasn't the debuting "Ninja Assassin," but the continually buzzed-about "The Blind Side" from Warner Bros.

Antal talks Predators

I think many people might be under the impression that Robert Rodriguez is actually directing Predators rather than just producing, but that's not the case. Nimrod Antal is actually the man behind the camera, and he recently sat down with ComingSoon to talk about the film. One piece of the interview that struck me the most was his explanation of casting Adrien Brody in the title role. 'Predators' to Go in Different Direction With Adrien Brody

In October, it was announced that Adrien Brody is among the cast for "Predators". Recently, director Nimrod Antal sat down with Coming Soon to talk about the upcoming extraterrestrial thriller film as well as the reason in choosing the Academy Award-winning actor instead of a big guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was the lead actor in the original movie series.

"I think when we cast Adrien, there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that," Nimrod claimed. Nimrod Antal Talks Predators

29 November 2009 12:21 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

It's safe to say that after the two Avp misfires we're all pretty much looking forward to Nimrod Antal's semi-reboot of the franchise, Predators, which is being produced by Robert Rodriguez. Finally the director himself has spoken a bit about the movie, and we really like what we're hearing!

In an interview with ComingSoon Antal dropped the following on entertainment starved fans:

"Let me tell you, I was so much of a fan that I stood in line when I was 14 and I had the poster on my wall," Antal tells Comingsoon. "I think when we cast Adrian [Brody], there were a lot of people going, 'What?' but at the same time, if we cast a Vin Diesel in that role or if we cast anyone who is Arnold-esque, we would have been attacked for doing that. Nimrod Antal's "Different Direction" for 'Predators'

29 November 2009 6:27 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Robert Rodriguez is producing and not directing the upcoming Predators reboot. The reason for the confusion, if you still have some confusion about it, is because Rodriguez wrote the script this new film is based on years and years ago, and because we so commonly associate Rodriguez as a one-stop filmmaking shop.

However, for Predators, Rodriguez gave the keys to Nimrod Antal, who directed Vacancy, although the director claims it was his work on the more recent Kontrol that probably convinced Rodriguez to give him the shot. And now he tells Coming Soon that next summer's update is coming together smoothly.

"So far, it's been great, and I think that the fans who may have been underwhelmed by the last two Avp films, I think they're in for a very pleasant surprise." »

Director Nimrod Antal Talks Casting Adrien Brody

28 November 2009 11:59 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

ComingSoon recently spoke with Predators director Nimrod Antal about his upcoming sequel to the classic 1987 action film, and his controversial decision to cast Adrien Brody as the leader of a bunch of bad-asses who fight the Predator aliens.  Antal says that it was too predictable to go with Schwarzenegger-type and how the role demanded someone of Brody’s physique: “He plays a mercenary in the film and if you look at the guys in Iraq and Afghanistan today, they’re not ‘yolked-out’ Schwarzenegger-looking guys. They’re all very wiry and thin guys, and I think it’s going to play well.“  Blackwater is the most infamous group of mercenaries fighting the “War on Terror” and here’s a link to a photo with some of them.  Yes, some of them are wiry but that’s an over-generalization and while I appreciate the unconventional casting, the original Predator is set up »
