Started The New York Rock Ensemble after Juilliard with fellow grads -- group performed in the "rock western" Zachariah (1971).
Educated at Juilliard School, New York. Studied oboe.
Graduated from High School of Music & Art (New York City) in 1965.
Played in orchestra and led school dance band.
Children: daughters Sasha and Zoe.
Founded the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation http://www.mhopus.org which supports music education and its benefits through the donation and repair of musical instruments to under-served schools, community music programs and individual students throughout the United States.
His haunting score for The Dead Zone (1983) is a masterly adaptation of, and variation on, a theme from the second movement of the Symphony Nr. 2 in D of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865-1957).
Co-wrote songs with Bryan Adams.
Was credited on the X-Men (2000) soundtrack as Michael K-Men.
