This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.
First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.
Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

Terry Gilliam often likes to shoot his actors using a fisheye lens, but with new find Lily Cole, that embellishment is hardly needed. Cole's wide-set features and exotic beauty landed her high-profile modeling work on the pages of Vogue and the runways of Chanel and Versace, but Cole says her biggest career challenge was playing the ingenue Valentina opposite Heath Ledger and Christopher Plummer in Gilliam's upcoming fantasy The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
Earlier this month, I spoke to the 21-year-old about her transition from model to actress, the tragedy of Ledger's death while filming, and the challenge of suddenly acting opposite the new actors (Colon Farrell, Johnny Depp, and Jude Law) called in to finish out Ledger's role. »

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is Terry Gilliam’s best film since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas or perhaps 12 Monkeys in 1995. In Parnassus, Gilliam proves that he retains the ability to pair his unique sensibilities with a beating heart of a character driven story. His visuals alone are noteworthy, but in this film they’re not the showcase.
The film centers around Christopher Plummer’s titular Dr. Parnassus, a bizarre Vaudeville-Wonka magician who is able to capture the souls of any passers-by who are willing to pay a pound to venture into their own imaginations. Parnassus is thousands of years old, due to a wager he has made with Mr. Nick (Tom Waits), who is ostensibly the Biblical Devil.
The unfortunate consequence of immortality, however, is that Parnassus continues to carry-on his show in a modern London that simply doesn’t care about his theatrics anymore — to see his »

Kristen Stewart in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, with Robert Pattinson (top) and Taylor Lautner (bottom) The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the Chris Weitz-directed Twilight sequel starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, earned $72.7 million on its first day out, including a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings, thus breaking the single day domestic box-office record previously held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, which made $67.2 million on its opening day last year. According to reports, if The Twilight Saga: New Moon keeps it up it’ll break another Dark Knight record: best opening weekend ever. (Though some analysts find that unlikely.) Last year, The Dark Knight earned $158.4 [...] »

Today is the 109th anniversary of one Chester Gould the creator of Dick Tracy. Every time Dick Tracy (1990) comes up, I think "you should watch that movie again!" but I never do. I think I'm still mad that Warren Beatty kept cutting away from Madonna's "More" performance... which should've easily been one of the best movie musical numbers of the 90s (sigh). Otherwise I quite like the movie
Trivia Alert! Dick Tracy is one of Oscar's two favorite comic book movies along with The Dark Knight (2008). Their Oscar track was very similar. Dick Tracy had 7 nominations and 3 wins. The Dark Knight had 8 nominations and 2 wins and in mostly the same categories, too.

Michael Lohan will not release another voice tape about his daughter Lindsay. After releasing several phone voice recordings to the public, the "Mean Girls" actress' father says there won't be another one coming.
Michael recently released a series of secretly recorded audiotapes of his conversation with his daughter and her mother, Dina, which only aggravated his already deteriorating relationship with the 23-year-old singer/actress.
One recording reveals a hysterical Lindsay claiming that "no one cares about me," while another hears his ex-wife Dina talking about their daughter "cutting herself and hurting herself." Another one exposes Lindsay's alleged secret relationship with the late Heath Ledger.
Needless to say, Lindsay and Dina were none too happy with Michael's move.

Lindsay Lohan's father has given up trying to force his daughter into rehab by releasing taped frantic phone calls with her to the media, after his ex-wife Dina called his actions "unforgivable".
Michael Lohan maintains he went public with the phone tapes after repeated attempts to convince his daughter she needed counselling for an alleged addiction to prescription drugs, but his media campaign drew harsh criticism from family members, Lohan's lawyer and the actress herself.
And now Michael Lohan has promised there will be no more tapes released.
He tells Life & Style magazine, "I will not release another audiotape about Lindsay. I did it because I wanted Lindsay to know how I felt when I heard that tape. When I get a phone call at two, three, four or five in the morning from my daughter and she’s in dire straits, I get very concerned."
The damning tapes, which Lohan played for a series of media agencies, included one on which Lindsay sobbed, "No one cares about me."
On another, Dina, Lindsay's mum, talked about Lindsay "cutting herself and hurting herself” and revealing the extent of the actress' romance with Heath Ledger, who died of a drug overdose in 2008.
Dina Lohan took aim at her ex for releasing the tapes, saying, "The tapes were from a long time ago. For a father to stoop this low is unforgivable." »

British actress Lily Cole recently chatted with MakingOf about her transition from modeling to acting and her breakout role in Terry Gilliam's latest film. Cole describes how after working with Marilyn Manson and being cast in the Sally Potter film "Rage" she was given the script and auditioned for "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus." She also reveals which scene was her favorite to film and how Heath Ledger encouraged ad libbing on set.
Her advice for landing roles is simple "I just let scripts come to me as naturally as possible - as opposed to chasing after them."

According to Batman On Film, Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. Pictures will officially announce their plans for the third installment in the "Batman" franchise in January. Apparently, their scooper told the site that "The longer we don't hear a Nolan/B3 announcement in 2010, the less likely it is that the director will return." The franchise has been a gargantuan success for Warner Bros. with "Batman Begins" debuting on June 15th, 2005 with $48 million before ending off with $205 million domestically and over $167.3 million internationally. The sequel, receiving additional pulling power from the sad passing of star Heath Ledger, opened on July 18th last year and amassed a massive $533.3 million in the U.S. »

Werner Herzog Brings The Music Back
By
Academy Award-nominated German film director, screenwriter, actor and opera director Werner Herzog was born Werner H. Stipetić on 5 September 1942 in Munich. His family moved to the remote Bavarian village of Sachrang in the Chiemgau Alps after the house next to theirs was destroyed during bombing towards the close of World War II. When he was twelve, he and his family moved back to Munich. The same year, Herzog was told to sing in front of his class at school and adamantly refused. He was almost expelled for this and until the age of eighteen listened to no music, sang no songs and studied no instruments. He would later say that he would easily give ten years from his life to be able to play an instrument. At fourteen, he was inspired by an encyclopedia entry about film-making which he says provided »

Batman On Film posted a short story last week saying "there's some scuttlebutt that in early 2010, Warner Bros. and Chris Nolan will finalize the plan for Batman 3." While many sites are running with the story and saying there will be an announcement of sorts, Batman On Film clearly states whether there will be an announcement or not remains to be seen, but the question of Nolan's involvement as director remains in the air.
I guess one would have to assume WB and Nolan would be smart to get things sorted out by at least June of 2010 so interviews for Nolan's new film Inception won't be bogged down with conversation asking about the next Batman feature, or at least kept to a minimum.
Will Nolan be back? My gut tells me yes he will be, but I could also see how the death of Heath Ledger and perhaps the expectation The »

Welcome to the dark side of cinema, where horror meets heroes.
Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight soared at the box office last year, becoming America's second highest-grossing movie of all time and earning a billion dollars.
The film was dark in more than just name, pushing its rating to the limit and leading to record complaints about film censors being too lenient with its certificate.
Its success led to predictions that it would be a trendsetter in superhero moviemaking. So what happened to the dark era of comic book adaptations? Do dark movies work? And should all superhero films be dark?
Human Horrors
The trend for sinister cinema started way before Nolan's Batman adventure.
The past few years have seen a growing tendency in films to show man himself as the monster rather than fantasy creatures and mythical beasts.
This became firmly established through a number of slasher films and »

The mega-successful and critically acclaimed Dark Knight had hardly hit theaters last year and already there was high anticipation (at least in the geek/online movie circles) for Batman 3. We have heard rumor after rumor after rumor about the third installment, including everything from Christopher Nolan not returning to Eddie Murphy playing The Riddler (I would have given up on life if that latter one was true), all turning out to have a distinctive lack of truth to them.
One of the biggest desires of Batman fans is that Nolan comes back to direct, since he did such a good job with the last two Bat-films, breathing fresh life into an effectively dead franchise with Batman Begins and knocking just about everyone’s socks off with The Dark Knight. But will he come back to direct the third? Well, we’re still not sure, but “a solid and longtime source »

No No No No No."I love the new Dark Knight series and 'Batman Begins,'" Cook told MTV News when asked if there were any comic book movie characters he has his eye on. "If they brought back The Riddler—a new Riddler the way they did with The Joker—that would be bad-ass. I would do that." Ahem. How would he play it? Why, by ripping off Heath Ledger of course."When they were making the new one and they were doing The Joker, I always thought it [should be] kind of like 'The Crow'—having that dark element but still comedic," said Cook of the type of Riddler he'd like to bring to the franchise. "It would probably have to be something in that vein, even though I think what Heath Ledger did with the Joker was the greatest comic book villain ever."The good thing is, we have nothing to worry about. »

When Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight made a billion dollars at the global box office and became America's second highest-grossing movie of all time, several subsequent action-adventure releases used its dark formula but without the same success.
As everyone now realises, the Warner Bros release did not succeed because it was dark, as Marvel's studio boss Kevin Feige has pointed out.
As Feige rightly says, it succeeded because it respected the source material (and also made it accessible for the ordinary viewer). Admittedly, it was helped along by the interest generated by Heath Ledger's untimely demise.
But hardcore fans do tend to want more violence in films - on superhero fan forums the cry for an adult rating is commonplace. Studios, though, are more wary about shutting out the family market altogether, especially since Watchmen and even more especially in a shaky economy.
Blood, gore and brutal violence often has to be omitted, »
