Monthly Movie Preview – December 2009

12 hours ago | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.

First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.

Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

Robert Downey Jr. Got In Shape Because He Contracted A Parasite

The 44-year-old actor has had to get fit for his action-packed roles in ‘Iron Man 2’ and ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and although he has been exercising regularly an illness he picked up in Japan kick-started his weight loss.

He is quoted as saying : “I was in Japan promoting ‘Iron Man’, and I went to a restaurant where I contracted a parasite and got really sick for three days. "I started losing weight and thought to myself, 'Hey this is a nice jump-start!' It just gave me a nice little head-start with the first five pounds and then I kept going until I was thin, I felt as though I may float away." Robert insists it’s important for him to be in prime condition for the roles because he has been asking the directors of both movies – Guy Ritchie on ‘Sherlock Holmes’ and Jon Favreau who is helming ‘Iron Man 2 »

Robert Downey Jr. says Guy Ritchie is a ''really smart bad-a*s''. The actor praised the director for his confident approach to working on 'Sherlock Holmes', in which the 'Iron Man' star plays the titular fictional detective and says he always felt comfortable working with the filmmaker. He said: ''We're in the hands of a really smart bad-a*s. The best word to describe Guy is 'confident'. Confident in a way that you can't pretend to be, because you only see it in the moment when it's crunch time.'' Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels Blu-ray Review

2 December 2009 8:01 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We’re ten years on in Guy Ritchie’s career, and from all evidence he’s about to turn the corner into pure commercial filmmaking. For most people there’s only one answer to what derailed him, and that is: Madonna. The pre-Madonna years featured Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch, the Madonna years featured Swept Away and Revolver, and the post-Madonna’s are now Rocknrolla and Sherlock Holmes, which should be one of the big pictures of 2009. My review of Guy’s Ritchie’s first film after this jump.

Lock, Stock is one of the numerous 90’s crime films to come in the wake of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. It’s a genre that burnt itself out rapidly, with only people like Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie proving themselves above the fray. The majority of the genre was overheated pabulum like Things to Do »

‘Bannen Way’ Trailer Launch Fuels Web TV Meetup Buzz

2 December 2009 3:06 PM, PST | Tubefilter.tv | See recent Tubefilter News news »

It's funny how The Bannen Way has come full circle, so to speak. The long-awaited action series after all started its buzz-filled journey from spec indie to Sony-backed studio project with just a flashy trailer over a year ago. Of course the full series wasn't actually shot back then, so the release of the actual HD trailer on Crackle.com this week is getting quite a stir going. As Streamy-winning Pink director Blake Calhoun joked today on Twitter, "I didn't realize Guy Ritchie was now directing web series ;)" For La-based folks, or those heading to the city, they will get an exclusive first hand look at the new series with never-before-seen footage. That, and we have The Bannen Way creators Jesse Warren and Mark Gantt (who also stars as con-man Neal Bannen) dishing on what "Going Pro" really means. Also speaking is the man who signs the deals over at Crackle, »

Sherlock Holmes and a new twist in game narrative

2 December 2009 3:33 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

How a game designed to publicise the forthcoming Guy Ritchie movie pushes the boundaries of the adventure genre.

It's not often that the promotional game for a forthcoming movie interests me as much as the film itself, but this is certainly a case in point. To lead up to the release of Guy Ritchie's idiosyncratic Sherlock Holmes interpretation, Warner Bros has commissioned a fascinating co-operative experience entitled 221B. Accessed via Facebook Connect, it's a sort of Myst-style graphical adventure, in which players must solve a series of crimes by reading witness reports, analysing evidence, interrogating suspects and occasionally chasing shadowy ne'er-do-wells through alleyways in Flash minigames.

The really clever bit is that when you sign-up, you select whether you want to play as Holmes or Watson, then nominate a friend to take on the other role – both players need to work together as they'll receive different clue elements; Watson »

'Sherlock Holmes': Robert Downey Jr. down for two sequels

1 December 2009 12:58 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

No plans are set in stone yet, but "Sherlock Holmes" star Robert Downey Jr. says there are storylines worked out for two sequels.

(Via Digital Spy). In an interview for the January issue of Empire magazine, Robert Downey Jr. says the people involved with "Sherlock Holmes," like himself, director Guy Ritchie and producer Joel Silver, "definitely know what we would like to do for the next two sequels."

Ritchie adds that the Sherlock Holmes novels provide "a reservoir of narrative that doesn't dry up over a hot summer."

Downey does temper the comments with a disclaimer that he "has no idea where anything is going to go." He goes on to say that he'd be happy to play "Iron Man" lead Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes until he ostensibly retires.

We'd love to see, Rdj. We'd love to see it.

"Sherlock Holmes" hits theaters Christmas Day.

'Terminator Salvation' Blows Up The World, Ben Stiller Spends The Night And More, In The DVD Report For Dec. 1

1 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Let's get this out of the way right off to bat: I enjoyed "Terminator Salvation." I know I'm sitting in a somewhat lonely circle, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for big, loud robots, cyborgs, whatever you want to call them, and "Salvation" has some jaw-droppingly cool scenes. The film is now hitting store shelves, and leads the DVD Report for Tuesday, December 1.

The studio was taking a gamble when it greenlit a fourth film in the venerable "Terminator" franchise. After a lackluster response to 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," many fans advocated for putting the series to bed, either to breathe or permanently. But away we went with director McG at the helm, and Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin -- two figures with legitimate geek cred -- attached to the budding sequel. The resulting story saw a band of resistance fighters battling to save humanity from the ever-evolving SkyNet. »

Paranormal Activity proves lo-fi thrills pay off | Charles Gant at the UK box office

The Twilight franchise may still be packing them in, but Oren Peli's low-budget shocker shows that big (and scary) things come in small packages, too

The winner #1

It's rare for a film to drop 63% from the previous weekend and it still be considered a good result. But you can certainly make that case with The Twilight Saga: New Moon. In other words, forget about the percentages, just focus on the cascade of cash. By any yardstick, more than £20m in 10 days is a big number. After just two weekends on release, New Moon is already the ninth-biggest hit of 2009, and will very soon overtake the likes of Monsters vs Aliens, Star Trek and The Hangover to land sixth place for the year. The original Twilight movie took less than £5m in its first 10 days, so the sequel is so far running at quadruple the pace of its predecessor. The »

I guess the next three DVD/Blu-ray previews I write up could also be looked at as potential gift guides as we are now counting our way down to Christmas. Perhaps you'll find a little something for yourself as well as someone on your list. Let's get into it...

A Christmas Tale (Criterion Collection) I just posted my review of the Blu-ray edition and it's a film I am already interested in revisiting and expect I will have a different reaction to each time. As it stands I enjoyed it, but wasn't completely bowled over and in terms of special features this one is a bit light when it comes to Criterion standards with only a making-of interview featurette and Desplechin's 2007 documentary about the selling of his family home, which is actually quite good. Written in Blood: An Interview With Ben Shillito On Writing Dead Cert

30 November 2009 11:55 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Dead Cert Writer and Co-Producer, Ben Shillito talks to Ed Whitfield about the perils of orchestrating an orgy of rampaging violence between Gangsters and Vampires on the page and how it all started in Colin Baker’s Tardis.

Tell me a little about your background. How do you get involved in screenwriting and what brought you to Dead Cert?

I’ve been writing since I was a child. It started with Dr Who scripts for Colin Baker’s doctor, mainly based around Tardis repair, bickering with Bonnie Langford and regenerating every few pages. A little later I read some lit. crit. and got it into my head that telling stories was a better idea than just plodding out a bunch of random scenes and then killing everyone off (a lesson I forgot on Dead Cert but promise to re-learn for my next project). Studying literature and film helped with the writing, »

my week at the movies: ‘Sherlock Holmes,’ ‘Armored,’ ‘Invictus,’ ‘It’s Complicated,’ ‘The Last Station’

Who wants a sparkly vampire boyfriend? I want an ass-kicking, violin-playing, cocaine-shooting-up, arrogant, superior, crime-solving genius boyfriend, and all the better if he’s played by Robert Downey Jr., who is probably just as fucked up as Holmes himself but is walking sex nevertheless. (Jude Law’s not so bad, either.) Oh my god I feel like I’ve been waiting for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (opens in the U.S. on December 25, and in the U.K. on December 26) forever, and I finally get to see it this week. Armored (opens in the U.S. on December 4 and in the U.K. on January 22, 2010) will not screen for critics, but I’ll attend a courtesy screening on Friday morning. No advanced screening is never a good sign for a movie, of course, but it’s especially disappointing when Nimród Antal’s first feature film, Kontroll, was so amazing. »

Iron Man 2 Movie Poster: War Machine Revealed

30 November 2009 3:11 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment have premiered the first official movie poster for Jon Favreau's Iron Man 2 on Yahoo. A poster usually means that a trailer isn't far off. The new poster plays off the number 2 and features Iron Man back-to-back with War Machine.  Favreau previously hinted on his twitter account that we might see the first trailer for Iron Man 2 attached to Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, which hits theaters on Christmas Day. Check out the full poster below. Here is what we know about the film so far: Sam Rockwell plays a fast-talking weapons manufacturer named Justin Hammer, "who fancies himself the next Tony Stark". He sells Stark the weapons he uses to construct War Machine. Mickey Rourke plays Russian criminal Vanko, who creates his own battle-suit while incarcerated in a Soviet prison. Whiplash's suit "shoots devastating, whip-like beams." Hammer and Whiplash join forces to take on Stark/Iron Man. »

Boiling Point: Show Me the Money

30 November 2009 12:16 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Recently, I took some time to finally give Guy Ritchie another chance.  The man had made two really awesome movies, then mucked about a bit and made some real stinkers.  Having heard good things about RocknRolla, I set settled in to give it a watch.  Ultimately the movie was okay, maybe I'd call it good.  It had some fun bits and some bad bits.  Closer to his old work most definitely, but it did have one annoying trait - the painting.  The painting that moves gangsters to tears and transfers hands like a hot commodity.  Of course, we never get to see it.  And that, of course, is bullshit. I'm most definitely annoyed by things like this.  This wasn't the first time and it won't be the last time, but come on.  It's not cute or clever or coy.  It's annoying.  It's lazy.  Perhaps the most famous example would be the briefcase in Pulp Fiction.
