Fashion fix: Vintage blue coat with red piping from Yes Man

3 December 2009 2:02 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Here at Boxwish, we don’t like to play favourites, electing one film, movie star or product as superior to all the others and yet sometimes it can be tough to maintain such principles. Just take Zooey Deschanel (easy boys!), the actress has snagged the likes of Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell and Joseph Gordon-Levitt with her offbeat charms onscreen, impresses with her musical talents (she performs with jazz act, If All The Stars Were Pretty Babies and has sung in many of her movies) and has a fashion sense to kill for, though thankfully, we’re not prepared to go that far. Yes, it’s fair to say we’re firmly lodged in Camp Zooey (if such a thing were to exist) and so we’re taking a leaf out of her style book with her vintage blue coat from Yes Man. »

Zooey Deschanel was on hand at the 2009 mtvU Woodie Awards to give out the Breaking Woodie prize (to the epically maned Never Shout Never) and to watch her husband, Ben Gibbard, tear through a set with Death Cab for Cutie.

But in between, she took some time to talk to MTV News about musical endeavors of her own — namely, the much-anticipated new album from She & Him, her project with M. Ward. Of course, in keeping with tradition, she didn't want to give away too much.

"It's going to [be a] more evolved version of the sound but bigger and with some more lush production and some sweet jams," she laughed. "I'm not at liberty to say [when the album will be released]. ... I don't know if it's 'top secret, »

(95) Days of Spirit

1 December 2009 4:10 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Spirit Awards are coming! In 95 days. The nominees have a long time to decide which pair of jeans or casual designer wear would best suit the event. Though the Spirits have traditionally passed out their ever-so-slightly off mainstream prizes the day before the Oscars this year they’re moving to a Friday night situation on March 5th. All the better for partying? Still time to use those hangover cures before the Oscars on Sunday.

Sin Nombre, a 3 time nomineeHere are the nominees

Best Feature(500) Days Of Summer | Amreeka |Precious | Sin Nombre | The Last StationI warned y'all that The Last Station would have more awards strength than many pundits are indicating. I must get around to Sin Nombre before the end of this year. I suspect Precious is your winner since the Spirits generally award the actual Oscar hopefuls.

Two of the best picture nominees also happen to be this year’s most nominated films: Lee Daniels‘ Precious and Michael Hoffman’s The Last Station, with five nods each. There were quite a few surprises this year — mostly those who were left out. First of all, where’s The Hurt Locker, winner of two Gotham Awards — best picture and best ensemble — and a likely Oscar contender? Well, don’t panic. Spirit Awards 2010 Nominees Announced

1 December 2009 4:07 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Academy Award nominee Taraji P Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and two-time Spirit Award winner Matt Dillon (Crash, Drugstore Cowboy) had the honor of announcing the nominees for the 2010 Spirit Awards recognizing the best in independent films released in 2009. No clear front-runner emerged as voters spread out the nominations over 35 films. The Last Station and Precious did tie for the most nominations with five each.

In celebration of the event's 25th anniversary, Film Independent has moved the ceremony from a beach in Santa Monica to downtown Los Angeles in a tent on the rooftop at La Live overlooking La. They've also changed the timing of the 2010 Spirit Awards from a Saturday daytime event to Friday, March 5th at 8:00pm. But according to Film Independent, the event will retain the casual, fun spirit of past Spirit Awards despite the new, more formal venue.

The Satellites Have Launched. What Are They Orbiting?

30 November 2009 6:10 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Satellites (formerly Golden) have announced their 2009 nominations for what it's worth. And you might be screaming "not very much".

It's hard to know what to make of this Golden Globe splinter group. There is never much of a narrative thread in their nominations. You can't sense from year to year a type of film they like or whatnot. Which makes them feel a bit suspect. They also do very strange things which you're about to see if you read their nominations. They never get much attention and yet they keep plugging away. This year they were especially kind to 2012 (who knew?), Nine and The Stoning of Soraya M. But they were downright rude to the sci-fi drama Moon which received zero nominations despite their lack of aversion to sci-fi films. I mention this because the moon is a natural satellite and the Satellites are artificial. Maybe they're jealous. What they're orbiting we know not. »

Danny McBride Talks Up In the Air and Your Highness

27 November 2009 2:41 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Danny McBride, who has made a career out of comedies like Tropic Thunder and Pineapple Express,, is moving into a more dramatic role in the upcoming Up In the Air. McBride told Collider that he was attracted to the role because of the opportunity to work with George Clooney and director Jason Reitman.

I just felt like the project was definitely special. It jumped off the page and the chance to get to meet Clooney and work with him was definitely a draw and to just be a part of something Jason believed in, it seemed like a no-brainer. So, yeah, I signed on for it and just thought I'd give it a whirl.

Up next for McBride is Your Highness, which will reunite him with his Pineapple Express and All the Real Girls director, David Gordon Green. The movie, which McBride co-wrote, will harken back to some of the fantasy 1movies of the 1980s. »

Why are we so thankful for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in 2009? Simple. The duo redefined the "cute couple" with their cool characters in "(500) Days of Summer." They almost made us forget about all the generic rom-coms and recycled relationship tropes regurgitated onto movie screens over the past year. We salute them for their originality, their willingness to take risks and their joyful, affecting, truthful portrait of love and loss.

Recently, Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel stopped by the MTV News offices to chat about their on- and off-screen bond, their other successful projects this year and what we can look forward to from them in the future — including a possible reunion on the big screen.
