'Underworld' Gets New Writing Blood

22 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

A veteran TV writer has been hired to re-energize the 'Underworld' franchise.

John Hlavin, who has written for TV shows including The Shield and Daybreak, and is currently developing a Western screenplay called The Gunslinger at Warner Bros., has been hired to write the fourth Underworld film, according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog.

The series revolves around an ongoing war between vampires and werewolves, although the last installment was a prequel. Hlavin would not disclose the plot of the next film, but said it definitely will not go the prequel route. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements," he said.

"The Shield" writer John Hlavin will pen the script for a fourth "Underworld" at Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment reports Heat Vision. While Hlavin won't give away details on the storyline, he does confirm it's not a prequel and it should "introduce fresh elements" as the filmmakers don't want to redo the first three films. No director or stars like Kate Beckinsale, Bill Nighy, Michael Sheen or Rhona Mitra have signed to return. Len Wiseman, Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright are producing.... »

Writer Beckoned to ‘Underworld 4′

20 November 2009 5:03 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Screen Gems/Lakeshore have found a cheap writer to journey once again to a world of vampires and werewolves.  John Hlavin has signed to pen Underworld 4.

Many media outlets are describing Hlavin as writer for FX’s “The Shield,” but he wrote two of the 89 episodes and served as story editor on four others.  The rest of his resume is pretty bare though.

Kate Beckinsale has not agreed to return to the series, which Hlavin confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter “is not a prequel.”  Neither has Rhona Mitra, who replaced Beckinsale as the bad ass brunette for the third movie (a prequel) titled Underworld: Rise of the Lycans.

In an interview in August, Beckinsale said she would not be adverse to it, but they would have to come up with an amazing script.  Then again, she thought the whole thing was a rumor at the time and she’s »

Underworld 4 Gets a Shield of Sorts

20 November 2009 11:13 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The fourth installment in the Underworld series -- whose quality you readers seem to be divided over -- now has a writer and it's none other than John Hlavin from The Shield. With no one yet signed to direct, and neither Kate Beckinsale or Rhona Mitra (from the third film) attached to star, everything about this project seems to be up in the air. The only things we can confirm so far, is that Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films, will produce, and that the movie is not a prequel. Said, Hlavin,"It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." Judging by this statement, it seems like the fourth movie will launch a whole new group of characters and storyline. »

‘Underworld 4′ scores a writer, still no word on Kate Beckinsale

20 November 2009 11:03 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Underworld 4 still doesn’t have a star attached (no Kate Beckinsale (Underworld, Underworld: Evolution) or Rhona Mitra (prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans) but it does have a writer.

Screen Gems has tapped The Shield writer John Hlavin to write the script for the fourth entry in the Underworld series. Want to know what Underworld 4 will be about? Keep waiting.

“I can tell you it’s not a prequel,” Hlavin said. “It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don’t want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.”

The 3D project is still without a director but is still on track for a January 2011 release.

Underworld 4 Gets a Writer from The Shield

20 November 2009 9:12 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Writer John Hlavin has been around the block. He's written several episodes of The Shield, the incredibly popular FX show, and episodes of Trust Me, the recently canceled TNT drama. But none of that will compare with the watchful eyes that will be upon his next project, as he signs on to pen the fourth installment in the Underworld franchise for Screen Gems and Lakeshore Entertainment. The fourth film -- which still does not have a director attached -- is "not a prequel," says Hlavin, who according to Heat Vision is keeping the plot under wraps. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences," he added. "Meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements." Underworld 4 Gets a Writer, But Still Lacks a British-Accented Heroine Babe

20 November 2009 7:44 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

With a fourth “Underworld” entry already greenlit by the studio, the biggest question on everyone’s mind (or at least, everyone who thinks werewolves and vampires fighting in a gothic setting with dark-blue scenery is awesome, anyway) is whether either of the franchise’s two British heroines will return in the leading role. Will it be Kate Beckinsale once again, as rumored, or her replacement Rhona Mitra? According to this latest report, it might be neither. Or possibly both. Okay, so I made the last part up, but one can dream, can’t one? What is a sure thing, though, is that a writer has been assigned to pen the fourth movie in former “The Shield” scribe John Hlavin. The writer has confirmed that “Underworld 4″ will not be a prequel like the previous entry, and he added this: “It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that »

A Fourth Installment of Underworld is Apparently Necessary

20 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

After the gorgeous Kate Beckinsale decided not to return for the third installment of even more vampire / werewolf battles in the Underworld series, I thought that it'd at least become a straight-to-dvd franchise, if not fall into oblivion. But apparently Beckinsale's replacement Rhona Mitra got the job done to the tune of $91 million internationally, so the series will continue as THR's Heat Vision announces that John Hlavin (writer for the FX series "The Shield") will take on scripting responsibilities for a fourth installment of the franchise, but neither Mitra nor Beckinsale are attached, and the project is still in need of a director. Hlavin wouldn't give up any plot details, but he did say "I can tell you it's not a prequel. Underworld 4 Gets a Screenwriter

20 November 2009 6:07 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

THR reports that former Shield writer John Hlavin will write the screenplay for Underworld 4. The fourth installment in the franchise is supposedly going to be shot in 3-D and will set up another trilogy of Underworld movies. Hlavin wouldn't say too much about the plot, but he did note that "it's not a prequel."

It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, meaning that we don't want to redo the first three movies, so steps are being taken to honor what fans have loved but at the same time introduce fresh elements.

Len Wiseman, director of the first two Underworlds will produce, while neither Kate Beckinsale, who starred in Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, nor Rhona Mitra, who starred in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, are signed on to return. However, Beckinsale has said that she could be interested in returning if she liked the script.

Underworld 4 hires a Shield staffer

20 November 2009 12:21 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

The makers of the Underworld franchise are serious about continuing the war between lycans and death dealers on. Producers Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg and Richard Wright, as well as original Underworld director Len Wiseman, have hired John Hlavin to pen the story for movie #4. Hlavin served as a story editor on The Shield, the cop procedural series that starred Michael Chiklis. Hlavin also worked on shows like Daybreak, E-Ring and Lax, so he's not a newbie to the scene.

But it might shape up that the next Underworld movie won't have any of the stars associated with the first three films. In short, there may be no Kate Beckinsale and no Rhona Mitra since there's no signed contracts for either actress. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the writer told the outlet that Underworld 4 won't be a prequel like Rise of the Lycans. "It will satisfy old fans and excite new audiences, »

Shield Writer John Hlavin to Pen the 4th Underworld Movie

19 November 2009 10:05 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We’re getting another Underworld movie and there’s no way around it.  I dropped out after the first movie, but it did teach me a valuable lesson: Kate Beckinsale in black leather spandex wielding two guns does not a good movie make.  Also (and I fail to understand this in New Moon as well), why are werewolves and vampires fighting?  I know that there’s some back story explaining it but what makes these two groups inherently in conflict as opposed to any other monster?

Maybe John Hlavin, a writer on The Shield, which is one of my all-time favorite shows, can explain it to me, or at least bring me back to the series.  Thankfully, Hlavin says he aims to do just that (while not alienating the precious fans who must be appeased lest the world suffer their wrath).  Hit the jump for details and wonder if you »

Weekly Poll Results: Best Female Action Star

19 November 2009 6:45 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Well I have to admit, I'm a little surprised by the results of last week's poll. Although Angelina Jolie has probably starred in the most high-profile female action roles over the past few years, I really didn't think she would top Milla Jovovich as the number 1 female action star currently working today. As it turns out, Film Junk readers voted Jolie #1 and Jovovich #2, although they weren't all that far apart. The next closest vote-getter was Uma Thurman, followed by Kate Beckinsale and a two-way tie between Summer Glau and Zoe Bell. Asian action stars apparently don't cut it for Fj readers, but I honestly thought Chocolate star Yanin Vismistananda would get a little more love from the hardcore martial arts fans. Do you agree with these results? Would the addition of any other names have changed the outcome of this poll? 1. Angelina Jolie -- 23.6% 2. Milla Jovovich -- 20.9% 3. Uma Thurman -- »

Kate Beckinsale Voted Fans' Favorite Catwoman For 'Batman 3'

Last week, we asked you which actress you'd like to see slip into a catsuit to play Batman's feline-fixated nemesis, Catwoman — and now the votes are in!

With over 20 percent of the final votes, "Underworld" actress Kate Beckinsale ended up the top choice among fans, with a pair of notable actresses following along in her wake, and a host of write-in candidates with a lot of support.

Here's how the voting breakdown looked:

Poll Results

Kate Beckinsale: 22%

Emily Blunt: 13%

Angelina Jolie: 12%

Rachel Weisz: 10%

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Catwoman In 'Batman 3'?

5 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In all likelihood, we're still quite a ways off from any real news regarding a third "Batman" movie from director Christopher Nolan—if he's even returning to the franchise, that is—but that's not stopping us from wondering which Dark Knight villain we should see in the inevitable sequel.

There's no shortage of rogues to choose from, but the one I think is an absolute necessity is Catwoman. Given the state of Bruce Wayne's life after the events of "The Dark Knight," this feels like the perfect time to introduce Selina Kyle—the woman who could either help mend Bruce's fences, or bring all of the walls tumbling down.

If Nolan, David Goyer and the other folks at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. decide to go the Catwoman route, I think that these five actresses would be great for the role.
