Will Smith To Star In “Flowers For Algernon” Remake?

11 November 2009 1:35 PM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Will Smith will probably star in and produce a remake of “Flowers For Algernon” an adaptation of Daniel Keyes 1959 novel of the same name which focuses on Charlie, a man with mental disabilities and a limited Iq who takes part in an experiment that turns him into a genius.

Charlie Gordon is a 37 year old man with an Iq of 68 who works as a cleaner…and all he wants in life is to be a genius.

Wanting to improve himself, Charlie attends reading and writing classes taught by Alice Kinnian.

Professor Nemur and Doctor Strauss are looking for a human subject to test out an experimental procedure for increasing intelligence. The procedure has already been successfully carried out on Algernon, a laboratory mouse.

Alice recommends Charlie for the procedure and his motivation to learn make him the prime candidate.

The story has been turned into a feature film several times before, »

Smith to star in Flowers for Algernon

11 November 2009 3:10 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Following the news that Smith’s Oldboy remake has fallen through, the erstwhile Fresh Prince has returned to more familiar territory – finding an Oscar-baiting role to alternate around his action projects.

With an I Am Legend prequel in development, and potential sequels to I, Robot and Hancock in the works, Smith has set his sites on an almost fool-proof project to finally nab the elusive Oscar he so clearly covets.

Pajiba are reporting that Smith is set to produce and star in an adaptation of Daniel Keyes 1959 novel Flowers for Algernon. The story focuses around a mentally retarded man named Charlie who, after experimental surgery, sees his Iq rocket from 68 to 185. His newfound intellect effects his ability to interact with those around him and proves far more of a burden than a blessing.

The story quite famously provided inspiration to an episode of The Simpsons and seems to tick all »

Will Smith Gets Flowers

11 November 2009 3:00 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

It looks like >Will Smith is on the awards war path again, and is reportedly looking to reunite a third time with The Pursuit of Happyness director Gabriele Muccino for an adaptation of the classic text Flowers for Algernon.

The book, which originated as a short story in the late '50s, has been made into a film called Charly in 1968, starring Cliff Robertson and Claire Bloom .

The story is a fairly sci-fi in a lot of ways - researchers have come up with a way to increase the intelligence of test subjects, with the titular Algernon, the mouse who first displays effects of their developments.

The story is however much more than a futuristic experiment - the dramatic change of the human test subject protagonist Charlie is such that he goes from being mentally disabled to intellectually unmatchable - but becomes aware that he is set to degenerate back »

Will Smith's Latest Tearjerker Is...

10 November 2009 3:56 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

It's not too hard to pick up on Will Smith's acting pattern. Usually he'll star in some big-budgeted affair, and then follow that up with a smaller, awards-type movie. Sometimes he'll wedge a comedy in between, though Smith tends to like two kinds of movies: really Giant blockbusters and really sappy awards contenders.   This latest rumored Smith film falls into the latter sappy awards contenders' category, somewhere along the lines of The Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds. In fact, that same director, Gabriele Muccino, may once again collaborate with Smith on Flowers for Algernon, based on the book by Daniel Keyes that has gone through several adaptations over the years – most notably with Ralph Nelson's Charly, which nabbed Cliff Robertson an Academy Award in...

Will Smith Wants Flowers for Algernon, Oscar

10 November 2009 2:23 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Will Smith may be the world’s biggest movie star, but he’s still chasing that elusive Oscar.  Nominated twice and coming up empty-handed, Smith has set his sights on the next awards-grabber and it isn’t the dreaded Oldboy remake (more on that at the bottom).

Smith is attached to star in Flowers for Algernon, a science fiction story that tugs at your heart strings based on the beloved 1959 novel by Daniel Keyes. According to Pajiba, the movie is being set up at Sony Pictures and Smith will produce under his Overbrook Entertainment banner.

Gabriele Muccino, director of Smith’s latest two Oscar bids (Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness), may direct.

In the story I was forced to read in school, Algernon is a lab mouse subjected to experimental surgery to increase its intelligence. The protagonist is Charlie, a mentally disabled man and the first human test subject for the same procedure. »

Steven Spielberg/Will Smith Oldboy Adaptation Dead; Smith Considering Flowers For Algernon

10 November 2009 12:53 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When you’re Will Smith and you’re not currently attached to any film, life is good.  It’s a little less good when the news comes out that your potential Oldboy adaptation with Steven Spielberg is dead and the entire Internet cheers.  But you pick yourself up, say a hearty, “Awhellnaw”, and move on to then next project, which could be another adaptation of Daniel Keyes’ novel Flowers for Algernon. Hit the jump to pull a hammer out of your skull and raise your Iq.

Latino Review reports the joyous news that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith’s planned adaptation of the Japanese manga Oldboy, which was turned into the intensely-loved 2003 film of the same name, will not be happening.  Mandate Pictures and DreamWorks pictures were to secure the rights together, they didn’t see eye-to-eye, walked away, and that breeze you felt was every film lover breathing a sigh of relief. »

Will Smith Goes for Broke With Flowers For Algernon

10 November 2009 8:53 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Now that the Smith / Spielberg version of Oldboy has reportedly died a well-deserved death (it's like there's a real version of The Box out there and some lucky Park Chan-Wook fan pushed the button -- do something good with your million bucks, buddy, you earned it!) Will Smith will have to look for other ways to bridge the gap between mainstream success like I Am Legend and the critical praise one suspects he really desires. So, it's come to this: Smith is reportedly looking to star in Flowers for Algernon. The Playlist already took the obvious headline here ("Megastar Goes Full Retard") so I'll have to settle for relating the deal. Pajiba says that Smith is setting up an adaptation of the novel at Sony, where he'll produce and star. Gabriele Muccino, director of Smith's last two awards plays (Seven Pounds and The Pursuit of Happyness) may direct. If you'll »

Will Gerard Butler and Gabriele Muccino 'Slide'?

27 October 2009 5:33 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The Scottish sensation otherwise known as Gerard Butler was able to add "successful producer" after his Evil Twins' Law Abiding Citizen enjoyed a fair amount of box office success. Not content to rest on his laurels, he's working on getting several projects off the ground and was happy to describe a few of them to Film School Rejects. While the previously announced Teacher Man and A Hanging Tale remain on his plate, Butler was eager to talk about Slide. Let's let him take it away, shall we?

"There's a few different projects that we've been working on, but there's one in particular - it's a movie called Slide about a former baseball player who goes back to try and patch things up with his child and estranged wife and ends up coaching the kid's baseball team," Butler said. "He becomes the subject of fascination and [longing] by every bored housewife in the town. »

Butler Sets Sights on ‘Slide,’ Hopes for ‘Happyness’ Director

26 October 2009 9:14 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Last week I got to talk with Gerard Butler, a man who your mother probably has up in poster form above her bed, on the occasion of Law Abiding Citizen hitting theaters and taking a lot of people's money. That film is the first that his production company Evil Twins, alongside manager Alan Siegel, has put out, and they are already getting the ball rolling on several others. Add Slide to that list. Straight from the Scottish horse's mouth: There’s a few different projects that we’ve been working on, but there’s one in particular – it’s a movie called Slide about a former baseball player who goes back to try and patch things up with his child and estranged wife and ends up coaching the kid’s baseball team," Butler said. "He becomes the subject of fascination and longer by every bored house wife in the town. And »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Seven Pounds’ With Will Smith is Manipulative Melodrama

2 April 2009 10:05 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0 Chicago – There’s arguably no bigger star on Earth than Will Smith but even the greats need a misfire to bring them crashing to the ground. “Seven Pounds” is a mess, a film of conflicting tones and arguably offensive themes, a movie that moves beyond traditional melodrama in just the first few minutes and keeps flying into the over-the-top stratosphere. The Sony Blu-Ray release is impressive, but the movie itself is not.

If you focus solely on the excellent work by Rosario Dawson and are impressed by gorgeous HD picture quality, there may be enough weight in “Seven Pounds” to warrant a rental, but most people will be shocked by this somber melodrama that somehow also tries to be a crowd-pleaser.

Seven Pounds was released on Blu-Ray on March 31st, 2009.

Ben Thomas (Smith) opens the film by calling 911 and announcing that he needs an ambulance for his own suicide. »

DVD Review: Seven Pounds (2008)

30 March 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Answer: 2001.s Ali. Question: what was the last Will Smith movie that failed to make at least $100 million?

Until 2008.s Seven Pounds, that is. Although this flick reunited Smith with director Gabriele Muccino, his collaborator on 2006.s hit The Pursuit of Happyness, Pounds failed to find much of an audience. It stalled at $69 million, a rather tepid take for a Smith movie.

In Pounds, Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent. In the wake of tragedy, Ben tries to reward good in the world, a quest that leads him to intersect with a mix of strangers who require various forms of help.

Yes, that may be the shortest story summary I.ve ever committed to a review. The nature of Pounds means that less is more in this circumstance; if I provide greater detail, I risk spoiling different elements and I also may dumb down the tale too much.
