Ellen Page Recalls Her Own Near-Death Experience: 'I Really, Truly Thought This Is It'

5 October 2017 7:37 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Ellen Page’s closest brush with death sounds like a load of bull.

The actress, 30, who plays a medical student studying the afterlife in her new movie Flatliners, told People about a time she barely escaped a personal visit to the great beyond.

“One time I was shooting a movie in Portugal,” she said, explaining that after one particularly long day of filming in the countryside, she decided to sleep in her trailer, rather than driving all the way back to her hotel.

“I went for a walk in the morning with the director in this field, and then all »

The ‘Flatliners’ Remake Buckled Under Millennial Confusion and Removed a Reference to the Original

4 October 2017 4:30 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Sony’s remake of Joel Schumacher’s 1990 psychological horror thriller Flatliners stumbled at the box office this past weekend, and limped its way from a 0% up to a 2% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That’s an abysmal score – even worse than The Emoji Movie – and it’s clear that the film’s premise and stars including Ellen Page, Diego LunaNina Dobrev, James Norton, and Kiersey […]

Is Ellen Page’s Movie Career in a Downward Spiral?

Keifer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and William Baldwin. If these names sound familiar to you then it is because they were the cast in the original Flatliners movie that took in more than $61 million. The reboot with Ellen Page opened with a heart stopping (in a bad way) $2 million. Since the focus of this article is on Ellen Page, we’ll avoid reviewing the movie here, though it is worth mentioning that it has a 3% critical Rotten Tomatoes score. Page, of X-Men and Juno fame, has people wondering what is going wrong with her movie

10 Actors to Watch: Kiersey Clemons Gets Ready to Join the ‘Justice League’

4 October 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kiersey Clemons is one of Variety‘s 10 Actors to Watch for 2017. For the full list, click here.

Asked to describe the last few years of her career, following her big-screen breakout in Rick Famuyiwa’s “Dope,” Kiersey Clemons notes, “there’ve been hits and misses.”

It’s probably not the way most 23-year-old actors would describe a three-year span that includes roles across prestige TV (“Transparent,” “Easy”), studio comedy (“Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising”) and giant blockbusters (“Justice League,” in which she’ll play Iris West). But it’s clear from talking to her that Clemons has very different standards for success and failure than your average actor.

“I might consider something a miss that other people might not,” she says, going on to explain her decidedly intuitive, non-careerist approach. “[I look at people like] Zoe Kravitz and Ellen Page, people who aren’t desperate or hungry for fame, and who aren’t doing something because it’s the next move to get »

'Flatliners' Composer on the 'True Blood' Scene That Catapulted His Career (Exclusive)

2 October 2017 6:32 PM, PDT | Entertainment Tonight | See recent Entertainment Tonight news »

Composer Nathan Barr isn’t a name an ordinary person would recognize, but scour his resume and one is bound to find a television show (True Blood, The Americans) or movie (Grindhouse, Hostel) they’ve obsessed over. Now, Barr is taking his talents to Flatliners, the modern remake of the 1990 sci-fi psychological horror film toplined by Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and Kevin Bacon.

But Barr, who grew up in Tokyo with musical parents and spent much of his career scoring horror films, credits his experience on True Blood, in which he served as head composer for its entire seven-season run, as his breakthrough moment.

“Ever since True Blood, things started to take off,” the 44-year-old industry vet tells Et. “As composers and in many facets of filmmaking, you always need that one person who endorses us and the phone starts ringing. When [creator] Alan Ball hired me on True Blood, that was one of those moments.”

Box Office: Tom Cruise, ‘Kingsman’ Sequel, ‘It’ Battle for Top Spot, ‘Flatliners’ Flatlines

30 September 2017 7:57 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal’s Tom Cruise actioner “American Made,” Fox’s “Kingsman: the Golden Circle” and New Line’s “It” are all battling for the top spot at this weekend’s North American box office.

Estimates showed Saturday that all three movies were heading for around $16.5 million for the Friday-Sunday period amid moderate overall business. Sony’s reboot of “Flatliners” showed little life in its launch with $6 million at 2,552 locations, coming in below what were already modest expectations.

The opening of “American Made” is performing slightly above expectations, which had been in the $13 million to $15 million range earlier in the week. The biopic, playing at 3,023 North American locations, stars Cruise as pilot Barry Seal, who was recruited by the CIA to help take down the South America drug cartel after being arrested for smuggling in the 1980s. »

Flatliners Is Doa with 0% Rating on Rotten Tomatoes

29 September 2017 4:30 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The remake of the 1990's Flatliners remake is getting torn apart by critics and moviegoers, resulting in a zero percent "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based off of 20 reviews as of this writing. Currently the movie is projecting to make between $5 and $8 million dollars at the box office this weekend with a budget of $19 million dollars, which is not a good sign for a movie that some are calling "the definition of meh." It isn't clear if the studio signed a Do Not Resuscitate contract because it looks as if the Flatliners has flat lined.

The trailers and promotional material looked promising, plus there was a cameo by Kiefer Sutherland who starred in the first Joel Schumacher directed Flatliners in 1990. Sutherland announced that the movie was intended to be a sequel last year before filming began, but it appears as if they lost the script for the planned sequel and »

Film Review: ‘Flatliners’

29 September 2017 3:58 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Joel Schumacher’s 1990 schlocksterpiece “Flatliners” was perhaps most notable for taking a silly but strangely compelling premise (a gang of sexy, thrill-seeking medical students who intentionally “flatline” to experience a little slice of death) as well as a stacked cast of young talent (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon), and somehow doing nothing much of note with either of them. So say this much for director Niels Arden Oplev’s decent-looking yet deadly dull remake – it’s nothing if not faithful to the original. About as inessential as reboots get, “Flatliners” finds a replacement cast of equally overqualified actors, and beefs up its depictions of the afterlife with some updated visual effects, but otherwise offers no reason for reanimating this long-expired property.

Taking over Sutherland’s old role is Ellen Page, who stars as Courtney, a serious medical student for whom a childhood tragedy has prompted an interest in the afterlife. Discovering »

Flatliners movie review: Doa

29 September 2017 2:55 PM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

MaryAnn’s quick take… The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival, with nothing new to say and no new way to say it. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a fan of some of the cast

I’m “biast” (con): tired of all the reboots

I have seen the source material (and I don’t much like it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival. Oh, this new and pointless Flatliners deserves all the terrible death-related puns we can toss at it: “Someone should have put a do-not-rescusitate on the 1990 movie.” “A fate worse than death.” “Brain dead.” “Send it to the morgue.” C’mon, it’s fun!

'Flatliners' Review: This Thriller Remake Is a 'Fright Free-Fiasco'

I'm dumbfounded by the idea of remaking a movie that was no damn good in the first place. Is it the possibility of making it better? The exact opposite happens with Flatliners, an update of the 1990 Joel Schumacher film that became a hit by corralling hot young talent of the day (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon) into a trippy premise about medical students experimenting with stopping their hearts for a few minutes to see what death is like. Box Office: ‘Kingsman 2’ Beating ‘American Made’ as ‘Flatliners’ Shows Little Life

29 September 2017 1:44 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Universal’s Tom Cruise actioner “American Made” is heading for a moderate $16 million opening weekend on a $50 million budget, early estimates showed Friday.

Although “American Made” is performing slightly above expectations, which have been in the $13 million to $15 million range, the film is set to lose to holdover “Kingsman: The Golden Circle.”

The biopic, playing at 3,023 North American locations, stars Cruise as commercial airline pilot Barry Seal, who was recruited by the CIA after being arrested for smuggling in the 1980s to help take down the South America drug cartel.

American Made” reunites Cruise with “Edge of Tomorrow” director Doug Liman, three years after the sci-fier preformed solidly, grossing $370 million worldwide. Critical support for “American Made” has been impressive, earning the film an 86% “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The second weekend of Fox’s spy comedy “Kingsman 2” should repeat as the box office winner, with about $18 million, and the fourth weekend of New Line’s horror »

‘Flatliners’ Review

29 September 2017 1:28 PM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Stars: Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemons, Kiefer Sutherland | Written by Ben Ripley | Directed by Niels Arden Oplev

Danish director Niels Arden Oplev is still best known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (what, you mean you don’t remember Dead Man Down?), and he brings the same flat, TV movie aesthetic to this “sequel” to Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-horror. The original’s high concept plot is retained and given a 21st century makeover – although it’s still as hokey and dumb as Schumacher’s film, and once again fails to capitalise on its central conceit.

The premise of Flatliners is that a young med student, Courtney (Ellen Page), comes up with the bright idea of having her heart stopped, then started again, under controlled conditions. She employs the help of a group of fellow students, who see the experiment as a shortcut to bountiful medical careers. »

Review: ‘Flatliners’ Is an Agonizingly Boring Remake of a Movie About the Dangers of Bringing Things Back from the Dead

29 September 2017 1:03 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If only its irony were the most painful thing about “Flatliners,” an artless and agonizingly boring remake of a semi-forgotten movie about the dangers of bringing things back from the dead. Lazily recycling the ’90s schlocky Joel Schumacher thriller of the same name (once a staple of video store shelves everywhere), this lifeless new version hits all the same beats as the original, but does so without a speck of the baroque style that made it such a fun thing to rent on a Friday night. At a time when making a movie — any movie — can feel like experimenting with life after death, there’s really no reason to belabor the point.

The story begins in the present day, nine years after Courtney (Ellen Page) accidentally killed her little sister in a car crash. Now an exhausted med student at a prestigious teaching hospital that seems to accept people based »

This weekend in theatres, I'm excited to check out American Made and Flatliners!

Based on a true story, Tom Cruise reunites with his Edge of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith), in this international escapade based on the outrageous exploits of a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history. Flatliners (2017) review

The new Flatliners? Best not.

You can probably think of all the best and worst puns that we could load into this review without even seeing Flatliners. So, with apologies in advance, there's no better way to describe Niels Arden Oplev's mis-sold remake than this - it just lies there on the slab.

1990's Flatliners is a sci-fi inflected psychological horror, directed by Joel Schumacher and boasting an all-star cast. In the original, Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt and William Baldwin star as medical students who conduct ill-advised experiments on themselves in the hope of proving that there is life after death.

In the 2017 version, it's Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons in the lead roles. The likeliest reason it wasn't shown to critics ahead of release is because, bizarrely, it's not the sequel that we've been led to believe it would be, »
