M. Night Shyamalan’s adaptation of the hit cartoon series Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my most anticipated films of 2010. The film, titled The Last Airbender to avoid confusion with a certain other movie coming out in two weeks, premiered a teaser trailer this summer but we’ve not seen anything major since.
The Last Airbender marks not only the largest-scale production for writer/director Shyamalan, but the first time he steps out from his trend of original work to direct an adaptation of an established and popular franchise. I for one, think this is fantastic for fans of the series and moviegoers alike.
In August, we heard from producer Frank Marshall that they were working on a trailer for Christmas, likely to be attached to Avatar or Sherlock Holmes but now comes news that it won’t be happening.
On Twitter (again), Marshall updated eager fans with »

Don.t expect any holiday gifts from Frank Marshall. The producer tweeted that we.ll have to wait until February for the debut of The Last Airbender trailer. The tweet reads, .Not enough Ilm shots finished, so Last Airbender trailer will not debut until Feb.... Ilm stands for Industrial Light & Magic, the film.s special effects company. So, clearly, they don.t have enough visual effects to put together the Christmas trailer promised. I can.t help but to wonder if the delay has something to do with the December 18th release of Avatar. Perhaps, director M. Night Shyamalan and his crew are concerned James Cameron.s masterpiece will steal their thunder. Okay, that seems sensible, but the longer they wait, the further its. separated from this summer.s teaser trailer. Will anyone except fans of the animated series even care by then? As long as the additional work time »

From the days back in the 1950s when James Arness played a walking space vegetable in The Thing, the alien invasion genre has been a successful one for Hollywood. And if there's gold to still be mined in those storytelling hills, why not? Steven Spielberg has given us his version of War of the Worlds, M. Night Shyamalan made a nicely told chiller about one family staying alive in Signs (which is still a decent enough movie if you stop it 10 minutes before the end of the film.) Both of those pictures went on to make over $200 million dollars at the domestic box office; more importantly they proved to the Hollywood bean counters that audiences will still pay to see the Earth get mean new landlords from beyond the stars. Right now Columbia Pictures is about to go into production with Battle: Los Angeles, Twilight author Stephanie Meyer's The »

Back in October we covered Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli was going to follow up his much loved, much hyped debut with Area 51. Using the same “lost footage” narrative, Area 51 follows the story of three teenagers who join forces to break into the famous Area 51 base armed with a camera. Nice little plot line to say the least, as Area 51 has been a constant source of interest for conspiracy theorists all over the world.
Now, with the huge success of Paranormal Activity it seems Paramount have picked up the rights to distribute Area 51. Eager to cash in on a director that is the talk of the town, it’s a no-brainer why they decided to back his next project. Using the same visual style and staying within the sci-fi genre this should be a massive success when it’s finally released.

Neve Campbell tells Black Book Magazine that she is "pretty sure" that Wes Craven is back on board to direct Scream 4, which is tenatively set to begin shooting in April 2010. Craven had said previously that he wanted to wait for a script to be completed, before he decided if he would helm the next sequel, the first part of a new trilogy. Courtney Cox and David Arquette have also committed to the fourth film, which is currently being written, concurrently with a script for a fifth film,by series screenwriter Kevin Williamson. The film will be set ten years later in Woodsboro, and is described as "an ensemble" which will introduce several new characters. Williamson has said that it will reference manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, PG-13 horror movies, vampire films, M. Night Shyamalan movies and even torture porn. via: Bloodydisgusting »

As soon as all this "Twilight: New Moon" buzz dies down, I have a feeling "Avatar" will be the new talk-of-the-town. Of course, this is not to get confused with "Avatar: The Last Airbender" from M. Night Shyamalan arriving in theaters next summer. We're talking about James Cameron's (Terminator 2: Judgement Day) effects-filled sci-action flick "Avatar" starring Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver and Michelle Rodriquez. The film will be arriving in theaters nationwide on December 18, 2009. FilmsActu.com has released a brand new French one-sheet for the the flick. Going off the poster, it looks like the French audiences will get to experience the film sooner as the release date says December 16. Read on to check it out.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Somehow, the end of the world has become a form of entertainment. Instead of being scared out of our wits of apocalyptic thoughts, we enjoy plunking down $10 to watch them become realized by big budget blockbusters. Hollywood serves it up, however: whole cities are destroyed, hundreds of thousands of people die, the fate of mankind is brought into question, and sometimes, Randy Quaid becomes our savior.
Which brings us to a certain theme that has been continued through a legacy of doomsday movies – they’re funny as hell. More unintentional than not, these movies are loaded with goofy movie milestones that make the blockbusters seem like gargantuan scaled jokes, with their characters, dialogue, and special moments serving as a type of punch line. Many disaster movies seem to be plagued by an air of idiocy that moves from one big budget movie to the next, »

For once it isn't M. Night Shyamalan getting stuck into a bitter dispute over a film's title (see The Woods/The Village and the Avatars) but some fresh meat. The combatants this time are documentarian Alex Gibney and sometime documentarian, sometime fiction filmmaker George Hickenlooper. At this moment, they're both at work with films about the disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff - Gibney a doc, Hickenlooper a drama set to star Kevin Spacey - and both of the films are claiming the title Casino Jack. A cease and desist letter has been sent to Hickenlooper from the legal representatives of Gibney, threatening "any and all necessary action" if Casino Jack the second doesn't budge over and find a new handle. What could "any and all necessary action" actually amount to? Some excerpts from the letter and from Hickenlooper's stinging response coming right up after the break. Why should it matter if »

Screenwriter Kevin Williamson is busy these days. He’s writing the script to Scream 4, producing episodes of “The Vampire Diaries,” Tweeting, and now writing/directing a remake of 1987’s The Bedroom Window.
Williamson is the sole reason I’m excited about a fourth Scream movie. Sure, Wes Craven may or may not sign to direct it, but the return of the writer from the first three films gives me hope for a worthwhile slasher. The meta Scream series has been somewhat reliable in parodying horror cliches, so I’m crossing my fingers for a slice and dice of modern cliches.
What does Williamson have in mind? He told the NY Post, “I’ve [included] manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there’s some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, even though they’ve come and gone.”
Sounds like he’s tackling quite a bit. »

Richard Kelly has once again made a film that confuses me. It's not the head-spinning, I need a chart to figure out the plot sort of confusion that Donnie Darko was. It isn't the "why did they need to expand more" confusion created by the director's cut of Darko. Nor is it that frustrating form of confusion caused by Southland Tales, where you wonder how this movie even got made when even the director doesn't seem to know what the movie's about. This is a different kind of confusing, as The Box is more than competently made, has a story that's easy to follow, and features terrific turns from all three leads, and yet it left me cold and not sure how I feel about it.
The Box is a typical Twilight Zone-movie, where an unnatural situation is thrown at a seemingly normal person, or peoples, who are then »

Writer Kevin Williamson says “there are a lot of twists and turns” in the upcoming Scream 4. Twists that may potentially include the killing off of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.
In a recent interview with PopWrap, Williamson refused to confirm whether or not the main character will be dead, but he did not rule out the possibility.
“The thing about Scream 4 is that there are a lot of twists and turns, so I can’t promise anything,” Williamson said about the Sidney character. “There are a lot of moving pieces, so we’ll see — but if you’re a Scream fan, I think you’re really going to like it.”
Williamson also chatted about which elements would be included in the next Scream: “I’ve [included] manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there’s some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, »

Marti Noxon (Mad Men) has signed on for the upcoming remake of the ’80s horror classic Fright Night.
In May, DreamWorks stated that the update on Fright Night will be an update to the 1985 film. Noxon’s version will retain the original tone from the first film while merely using current technology to upgrade its special effects.
Noxon serves as producer on the Emmy-award winning drama on AMC. He also served as a writer for Buffy the Vampire Slayer along with its short-lived spin-off Angel.
William Ragsdale stared in the original Fright Night which was written and directed by Tom Holland. The main character discovers that he has a vampire as a neighbor. Huzzah. The original also starred Roddy McDowell.
No word on casting on the project.

After it has been confirmed that Neve Campbell will reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in "Scream 4", there is wild rumor that she will be killed off in the upcoming movie. Kevin Williamson is still finishing his script for Scream 4, but he told The NYPost what influences he is using for the sequel.
I've [included] manga comics, Asian ghost girl movies, there's some PG-13 horror movies in there, vampire movies, M. Night Shyamalan movies and torture porn movies, even though they've come and gone.
Scream 4 will see the return of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette as the trilogy's main survivors. Yet, when asked if Campbell, who was the last to confirm she'd return, will survive yet again through the next trilogy of Scream movies Williamson is planning, he replied, "I can't promise anything."
However, he did say to expect laughs and, more importantly, scares.
You have to be careful because Scary Movie spoofed these films, so one of the things I'm excited about with Scream 4 is that, while we do lampoon and send up the genre, [we] make it incredibly scary. »

The horror genre has undergone quite a few changes since Scream single-handedly rescued the genre from box office oblivion back in the mid 90s (I can’t believe it’s been over ten years already) so news of a fourth film has really piqued Dread Central’s curiosity. Will Scream 4 be in line with the gorier, nastier flicks that came after the self-referential trilogy, or can we expect some good-natured winking to accompany our slashing? We’ve got an answer for you.
The New York Post’s PopWrap talked to writer Kevin Williamson about the looming fourth film in the franchise: ”The thing about 'Scream 4' is that there are a lot of twists and turns, so I can't promise anything", meaning any of our returning characters might not live to see another sequel beyond 4.
Commenting on the changes within the horror genre, Williamson said the following: "I've [included] manga comics, »

Broken Lizard has been following a similar path to M. Night Shyamalan. Both opened strong in terms of films -- think Sixth Sense and Super Troopers -- but both have been on a slippery slope of films that can't make a mark. In their latest attempt, Broken Lizard gives us The Slammin' Salmon and I do have to say that it looks pretty good... So far.
The Slammin' Salmon Poster + Trailer
In the latest comedy from Broken Lizard, "Slammin" Cleon Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan) is a former Heavyweight Champion of the World turned celebrity owner of a high end Miami seafood restaurant, The Slammin' Salmon.
A terrifying bull of a man, Salmon uses fear to rule over his misfit waitstaff (Broken Lizard's Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske, as well as Cobie Smulders and April Bowlby) and on this particular night, he takes his bullying skills to a new level. »
