Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 6, 2009
Plot: A financially desperate couple (Diaz, Marsden) is randomly presented with a box – inside the box is a simple red button. However, there is a catch – if they press the button, they will be awarded one million dollars. At the same time, someone in the world that they don’t know will be killed.
Who’S It For? Like the title object’s existence, The Box is a film made for the curious: those curious to see how the Donnie Darko director does with a mainstream budget, or those curious to see how the film should be placed in a list of this year’s bad-funny movies. Fans of psychological thrillers might want to take a gander, but at their own risk.

Columbia Pictures recently released two more clips from the upcoming disaster movie, 2012. These clips, while not as long as the five minute clip we previously posted, still have yet to show anything that makes me feel like this film will be anything more than a money-grab at the end of the world. (Which, I guess, would be the perfect time to do it).
In the first clip we find a zombie-free Woody Harrelson playing “crazy” internet blogger Charlie Frost who knows everything there is to know about the end of the world and warns Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) that, in typical movie fashion, the destruction will start in Hollywood, California. (It’s movies like this that always make me feel better about living in Michigan. So far it looks like I’m surviving Independence Day and when Skynet becomes self-aware on Judgement Day).
In the second clip we find the »

I like to consider myself one part book nerd, the other part film geek. So nothing excites me more than when these two worlds come together. That’s why news that we’re one step closer to a film adaptation of Yann Martel’s prize-winning novel Life of Pi really “floats my boat.” Well, you’ll get that reference in a minute if you don’t already. Life of Pi won England’s prestigious Man Booker Prize back in 2002, and after devouring it page by page in a matter of hours, I made it my mission to read every other Booker Prize winner I could get my hands on. The story concerns little Piscine “Pi” Molitor Patel, who survives a shipwreck only to find himself adrift in a lifeboat with four very unlikely shipmates: a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a tiger. In February of this year, it was »

After the box office disappointment of his last movie, Taking Woodstock, director Ang Lee is apparently looking to adapt an award-winning novel from Canada next. Averaging one feature every two years since The Hulk in 2003, Lee said that his next project "is two years ahead," but he told Digital Spy that he has a story in mind.
I think I'm going to do Life of Pi. A little boy adrift at sea with a tiger. It's a hard one to crack.
Written by Yann Martel and originally published in 2001, Life of Pi tells the story of Piscine "Pi" Molitor Patel, a young Indian boy stranded on a boat in the Pacific Ocean with a zebra, an orangutan, a hyena and a Bengal tiger named "Richard Parker." The British edition of Life of Pi won the Man Booker Prize for Fiction the year after its release, and M. Night Shyamalan (The Happening »

A week loaded with oh-so-worthy awards season contenders is offset with the comic relief of Jim Carrey's performance captured flailing, George Clooney's self-deluded staring, and the teasing promise of an affordable(!) trip to the ballet.

You could make the argument that if Richard Kelly could only get the whole world to come over to his house and listen to his record collection, he might not feel the need to make films at all. That said, his fall from grace following the flop of "Southland Tales" was so total that he went from the director anointed as the hipster's David Lynch to the arthouse M. Night Shyamalan overnight. With much riding on this comeback, Kelly has turned to Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button," previously immortalized as an episode of "The Twilight Zone, »

Even though Taking Woodstock wasn't as big of a success as he had hoped, Taiwanese director Ang Lee is moving on forward with his head held high. It was first announced in February that Lee would be the latest to take as shot at adapting Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi, about an Indian boy who is the lone survivor of a sunken freighter and winds up sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger. Lee confirmed with two separate outlets that it is his very next project, but it's still a ways out. "I think I'm going to do Life Of Pi," Lee told Digital Spy recently. "A little boy adrift at sea with a tiger. It's a hard one to crack." It is indeed a hard one to crack, as other great filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet »

"BioShock 2" has a lot to live up to. It's the eagerly anticipated sequel to one of the most critically acclaimed titles of the past two years and it's those very expectations of fans that run at odds with the title's chances of critical (though maybe not commercial) success. Earlier this month I spoke with Ken McClendon, the lead designer on "BioShock 2," about this very issue. Just how does one go about creating a sequel with fan expectations set to such a high bar -- especially when one considers that it was a well-crafted plot twist that cemented the first title's success in the first place?
McClendon responds:
"It's an incredibly humbling endeavor. We often go back to the first game to check things for reference, and every time I do I know I'm really struck by how well put together everything in that game is, and how it's all pointing »

The New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies aren't exactly the fiercest of rivals, but there is sure to be blood — or maybe just some home runs, botched calls and heated arguments with umpires — when the two baseball teams collide for Game 1 of the World Series this evening (so long as the rain stays away that is!).
As New Yorkers and Philadelphians prepare for battle, we got to wondering about some of the other rivalries already in place between the two cities — in motion picture form, that is. I'm not necessarily talking about fictional competitions between NYC and Philly, so much as stacking movies set in those cities against one another.
Through that framework, you'd be surprised at how many competing movies there are between the Empire and Keystone States — just hit the jump and see the head-to-head match-ups for yourself!

Ang Lee has confirmed that his next movie will be an adaptation of Yann Martel's Man Booker Prize-winning novel Life Of Pi for Fox 2000. Night Shyamalan, Alfonso Cuarón and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, follows a boy who survives the sinking of a freighter and shares a lifeboat with an array of exotic animals. Check out MovieSet’s Top Ten Horror Movies since 2000
According to my spiffy Hotel For Dogs calendar, this year is almost over. Now it would be the professional thing to wait the final months until unveiling this list, but I say nay! October is the time for horror so I apologize if the scariest movie comes out in these remaining weeks, but here are my Top Ten Horror Films of the Decade
#10 – Caché
This is more of an unconventional choice and that’s why I decided to place it so low. It’s not really a horror film, but it’s an unsettling movie with a few powerful scares. The director, Michael Haneke, is not interested in giving you a lot of answers, but he does keep you »

Last week casting news starting coming in on the upcoming project Devil, which is being helmed by John Dowdle (Quarantine). And now we have some details on just who is going to be bringing the Devil to life.
The special effects for Devil are being created by Robert Hall and Almost Human Studios. Hall, who wrote and directed (and created some pretty badass kills for) recent Grimmy-winner Laid to Rest, previously worked with Dowdle on Quarantine.
Almost Human recently created effects for the upcoming flick The Crazies, as well as for The Burrowers and the FEARNet web series (which Hall also helmed) "Fear Clinic."
"I am thrilled to get to work with the Dowdles again after collaborating with them on Quarantine," said Hall. "Even though I can't really discuss the plot details for Devil, what I can say is that this is one of the best scripts I have read in a while, »

From Hollywood Crush: Jackson Rathbone has been working his butt off this year, though most of what he's been working on wont be seen by the public until 2010. He finished filming M. Night Shyamalan's "The Last Airbender" and "New Moon" earlier this year, is completing his final two weeks of filming for "Eclipse" right now, and when we caught up with him last week, was working the dual roles of producer and actor on his indie flick, "Girlfriend." Oh yeah, and hes in the process for gearing up for a 100 city tour with his band, 100 Monkeys.
"I just want to work. I don't sleep," Jackson admitted with a laugh.
That was literally the case when we met up with him last week. Both he and bandmate/co-"Girlfriend" star and producer Jerad Anderson had hopped a plane from Vancouver the night before and started working when they landed. He »

He's fresh off of The Crazies remake and the upcoming series Fear Clinic which he directed for FearNET. The FX vet won't divulge plot details, but he says it's one of the best scripts he has read. Around the time the wonderful City of Ember came out, we asked if the film was the first true post-apocalyptic kids flick. Well we were pretty sure it was until we found info on this little weird gem, a long lost Pa production from the UK called Dark Enemy which sounds like a cross between John Wydham's "The Chrysalids" and M. Night Shyamalan The Village.
Directed by Colin Finbow, Dark Enemy is a product of the old British "Children's Film Unit" which was funded to encourage children to create movies. A sort of by kids, for kids kind of deal. It's a post-nuclear holocaust story set in a bucolic valley where children have to work because the adults are all dying off. They're told never to leave the valley, but they do, discovering some sort of secret.
Synopsis:
After a nuclear war, a group of children at an isolated farmhouse »

Director M. Night Shyamalan has formed a new production banner called The Night Chronicles. The company will be a vehicle for The Sixth Sense director to formulate ideas and generate stores while appointing directors and the writing staff. He is expected to remain executive producer on all projects and will not direct any features himself.
The first product from The Night Chronicles label will be Hard Candy and 30 Days of Night scribe Brian Nelson’s Devil. The project will be directed by John and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine) and will begin lensing later this month in Toronto.
According to /Film, Devil revolves around a group of people stuck in an elevator in an office building. The group is made up of blue-collar workers and one of them is The Devil.
The horror/thriller will star Chris Messina ( Julia & Julia), Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me to Hell), Bokeem Woodbine (Dead Presidents), Geoffrey Arend »
