John Madden, no not the animated and legendary football commentator, rather the Academy Award winning British director behind Shakespeare In Love is set to direct the remake of the classic Lerner and Lowe musical, My Fair Lady, a 1964 Academy Award nominated film.
Madden is currently completing production on the Helen Mirren film The Debt for Miramax and Marv Films, will ramp up the search for his leading lady and man in the new year. It was recently reported that Keira Knightley was still attached to the project after circling the project for some time, however there is no formal agreement for her to play Eliza.
Joe Wright was also attached to direct previous to Madden’s now involvement. The pic is being produced by Duncan Kenworthy and Cameron Mackintosh, who have been attached to the project since its start. Variety who broke the news says that this remake will draw »

There is still no solid agreement for Keira Knightley to take on one Miss Eliza Doolittle, but it looks like the remake of My Fair Lady may finally have found a director. One who is not Joe Wright. Variety reports that the helmer behind The Debt -- John Madden -- is currently in talks to direct the film. Seeing that The Debt hasn't come out yet, let's be more clear: The director behind Shakespeare in Love, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Proof, and Killshot is the guy circling this feature.
That should be pretty decent news for the film. While I can't say that his subsequent work has brought him the same acclaim, getting an Oscar nomination for Shakespeare proved that he's at his best when dealing with classic literary romance. And while I would've loved to see Baz Luhrmann take it on (he was previously linked to the shebang), I can't »

Have to admit, I'm a bit surprised that a remake of My Fair Lady has generated as much talk as it has in 2009, but that's what happens when a couple of very high profile names get attached. (And not to really knock it, especially if it sticks close to the original Pygmalion, as reportedly it will.) Legit attachments have included Stephen Daldry and Baz Luhrmann. Then it was Danny Boyle circling the project. He bounced away from it to do 127 Hours, and there's talk that part of the reason Boyle didn't do the film is because he couldn't interest Daniel Day-Lewis in the lead role. Then there was talk of Atonement's Joe Wright directing the film, but that turned out to be speculative poop, for the most part. Wright denied any involvement flat-out. Now there's a real bit of news: Shakespeare in Love director John Madden is in talks »

After we dispelled the rumours that Joe Wright was set to direct a remake of George Cukor's masterpiece My Fair Lady - the one with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison - all has been quiet for a month or so, but now we hear from Variety that the Shakespeare in Love director John Madden is closing in on the project.
According to the trade daily, seasoned producer Duncan Kenworthy (Love Actually, Notting Hill etc. etc.) and stage impressario Cameron Mackintosh are producing the project which will retain the 1963 score but go back to the original source (Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw) for a little bit of fresh drama.
To be honest, the less we think about this project the better - especially considering that Keira Knightley's name is still connected with the main role. We love the original and genuinely think that some things should remain sacred... what do you think? »

This 1956 Broadway musical has already been given the big screen treatment before as a 1964 Academy Award nominated adaptation starring Audrey Hepburn. However, another remake of the classic My Fair Lady has been in the works for some time now with names like Danny Boyle and Baz Luhrmann attached to direct at various points in development. Now it looks like the Columbia Pictures project has found a director as Variety reports that Shakespeare in Love director John Madden will helm the project and search for his leading lady and gentleman in the new year after completing production on the The Debt with Helen Mirren. Madden's search for a lead actor and actress just might mean that the previously interested Keira Knightley may have gone out the window with also once attached director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice). So now it's anybody's guess just who will fill the shoes of Eliza ... »

After courting numerous directors like Joe Wright and Danny Boyle, Sony Pictures has found a director for their My Fair Lady remake. John Madden (Shakespeare In Love) is officially in talks to direct the film and is expected to begin work on casting in early 2010. But what's this, hasn't Keira Knightley been attached to star in the film for what seems like years now? Turns out that while Knightley was interested in the project, there was an is no formal agreement for her participation.... »

The director of Atonement, The Soloist, and Pride & Prejudice is jumping into the action pool? That's what The Hollywood Reporter indicates: Director Joe Wright, best known for Oscar-friendly drama, is about to sign on the dotted line to helm Hanna, which THR describes as a La Femme Nikita style project: "The story centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When the girl is dragged back to her father's world and discovers that she was bred as a killing machine in a CIA prison camp, she must fight her way to a free life."
Sounds to me like a fairly conventional, rather familiar tale -- so then why were Danny Boyle and Alfonso Cuaron both (briefly) attached to the project? »

Joe Wright has earned a reputation for directing films like Atonement and Pride & Prejudice, but after his latest production Indian Summer with Cate Blanchett fell into budgetary disarray, he decided to halt the production and jump ship to an action film, the assassin flick Hanna. Heat Vision has the details: The project has garnered considerable attention in director circles since getting set up at Focus in 2007, with Danny Boyle kicking its tires as a directing vehicle at one point and Alfonso Cuaron circling it in recent weeks. The project is described as having shades of “La Femme Nikita” and the “Bourne” movies. So The Soloist may have landed with a bit of thud, but Joe Wright is still the man behind Atonement and Pride And Prejudice, so the announcement of his next project is rather ear-catching. Wright is reportedly about to be set to helm Hanna, which features a fourteen year old Eastern European girl, born and bred to be a ruthless assassin. Yeah, quite the change from his previous projects indeed. Hanna tries to escape her life of murder by befriending a French family, but is soon pulled back... »

Concepts that will always stop me in my tracks: when a visually compelling director (in this case, Atonement's Joe Wright) takes on a project that is being described as having shades of La Femme Nikita and the Bourne movies. That is how Borys Kit at Heat Vision is describing Hanna, the next project for Wright. It is a project that has been kicked around by several directors since it was set up at Focus Features in 2007, including Danny Boyle and more recently, Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron. The story revolves aroudn a 14-year old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and begins going through the norms of adolescence. But when she is dragged back into her fathers world, she discovers that she was bred as a killing machine in a CIA prison camp »

Joe Wright may have faltered recently with The Soloist, but his Pride and Prejudice and Atonement were strong enough to convince me to follow his rising career. He was slated to take on Indian Summer with Cate Blanchett, but now that that project has been put on hold due to budgetary concerns, it seems that Wright is eying an action-adventure thriller, Hanna. Action is an entirely new genre for Wright, but it's one I think he'll take to quite nicely given his propensity for luscious visuals. According to the THR Heat Vision Blog: The story centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When the girl is dragged back to her father’s world and discovers that she was »

Director Joe Wright is switching genres once again. Heat Vision announces that Joe Wright is in talks to direct Focus Features' new action-adventure thriller titled Hanna. Wright last directed The Soloist as well as Atonement and Pride & Prejudice before that. Hanna is described as similar in tone to La Femme Nikita as well as the ever-popular Bourne movies. Newcomer Seth Lochhead wrote the script that was also revised by David Farr (of BBC's "Mi-5" series). This will be Wright's very next project, not the originally slated adaptation of Indian Summer, which was put on hold due to rising budget concerns. Read on for the plot. The story in Hanna centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine. She connects with a French family, forms a friendship with their daughter and goes through the pangs of adolescence. When »

Director Joe Wright has developed some serious cred when it comes to dramas with Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, and this past April’s The Soloist. However, none of those films had a fourteen year old girl killing lots of people, although I certainly wanted lots of people to kill the fourteen year old girl in Atonement (not the actress, but the character). Wright will throw a serious change-up into his filmography with Hanna, an action-adventure film described as a mix of La Femme Nikita and the Bourne films*. However, the protagonist’s nationality is more Nikita and the people she’s fighting look more like Jason Bourne. Hit the jump for more details.
Wright was originally slated to direct the period drama Indian Summer, starring Cate Blanchett. However, as the budget ballooned and the filmmakers realized that period dramas aren’t exactly smash hits at the box office, they put the project on hold. »

After the costumed, Oscar nominated, drama-y successes of Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and to a lesser extent The Soloist*, Joe Wright is taking a very different turn for his next film, Hanna: an action-adventure-thriller story about a teenage assassin. The plot sounds very much like the premise to the TV series Alias. Hanna is a 14 year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised to become a "cold-blooded killing machine". She finds a new life when she "connects" with a French family, and in particular befriends their daughter, but her father soon pulls her back into his world. She learns then that she was "bred as a killer in a CIA prison camp" (which shouldn't have come as much surprise given her previous training) and then tries to fight her way to freedom and a normal life. The script was written by Seth Lochhead and David Farr, and has had a lot of buzz around it, »

Lately all the news about Joe Wright has been what he's not working on-- not making a romance in India, not remaking My Fair Lady. After so many rebuttals, Wright finally seems ready to say yes to something. According to THR, he's got his eye on Hanna a spy thriller about someone resembling the teenage girl version of Jason Bourne. Oh yes, such an awesome movie can actually exist., particularly with someone as in tune with girl power as Wright directing. The movie has been at Focus Features since 2007 and has even had Danny Boyle and Alfonso Cuaron interested, but apparently they're more interested in going with someone less experienced in action, but maybe more up for a chance following the disappointing results of The Soloist. The plot alone sounds like a major departure for Wright: "The story centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by »

Director Joe Wright has laughed off reports he is set to head up the remake of My Fair Lady, insisting he is not connected to the picture.
Daily Variety claimed Wright would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of the 1964 musical, based on George Bernard Shaw's comedy of manners, Pygmalion.
But the Atonement filmmaker has shot down the rumours, revealing he turned the project down.
He says, "It's not happening! It's all a lie. I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." »

Well, we can't be right all the time. Last week we brought you the news from the trades (it was in Variety! It's not our fault!) that Joe Wright, director of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice, would be reteaming with Keira Knightley for a new version of My Fair Lady, scripted by Emma Thompson. It turns out that at least 33.3% of that story is completely untrue, as discovered by Screenrush when they asked Joe Wright about it at the London Film Festival."It's not happening! It's all a lie!" opines Wright. "I thought about it for a couple of minutes and decided not to do it, and then suddenly it got into the press that I was doing it." And his motives for turning it down? "No reason really. You get a lot of scripts and you read them and..."So that's Danny Boyle and Joe Wright out of the director's chair. »
