‘The Long Dumb Road’ Director Hannah Fidell On Capturing “The Great American Road Trip” — Sundance Studio

‘The Long Dumb Road’ Director Hannah Fidell On Capturing “The Great American Road Trip” — Sundance Studio
Taking on her first comedy with the Sundance-premiering The Long Dumb Road, Sundance alum Hannah Fidell (A Teacher) found a game cast who would go with her on a classic journey through the American Southwest. Fidell’s film centers on Nathan (Tony Revolori), whose car breaks down on the road as he journeys to Los Angeles for his freshman year of college. At this transformative juncture, Nathan meets Richard (Jason Mantzoukas), a rowdy local mechanic who ends up joining him…

Sundance Review: ‘The Long Dumb Road’ Makes the Case for Jason Mantzoukas as a Leading Man

Welcome to the Jason Mantzoukas show. The Long Dumb Road, directed by Hannah Fidell, leans full-tilt into the anarchic charm of the long-time cult comedian to decidedly mixed results. Though it’s hard to blame the actor. Co-starring Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), the film concerns two strangers brought together on the… road. One is Nat (Revolori), an art school-bound teen lacking in experience; the other a recently-fired, middle-aged wanderer named Richard (Mantzoukas). On the way to Los Angeles, the duo become fast friends before it all starts to get complicated. Running 90 minutes and featuring some lovely southwestern scenery (courtesy of Andrew Droz Palermo), the film moves along at a nice clip until it begins to run out of steam.

Revolori’s doing fine work here, but the bulk of the weight lies on Mantzoukas. As written by Fidell and Carson D. Mell, the script demands a lot from the actor.

Sundance Film Review: ‘The Long Dumb Road’

Sundance Film Review: ‘The Long Dumb Road’
Freshman photography student Nathan (Tony Revolori) is on a quest to find the real America. On “The Long Dumb Road” of director Hannah Fidell’s title, his trek from Texas to Los Angeles, he pulls over to shoot shuttered movie theaters and American flags drooping over drive-thrus, the kind of cynical corporate salute a kid like him considers deep. He’s too snobby to actually eat a fast-food burger, but when his purple minivan breaks down in Fort Stockton, the real America — or at least, an alcoholic mechanic (Jason Mantzoukas) drifting through it — takes the wheel of his trip, with several disastrous detours and stretches of pleasant pointlessness.

The normcore-meets-nutcase road comedy is older than Route 66, and the film’s destination could have been plotted by Google Maps, as well as the familiar screen sight of two men companionably peeing together in the wilderness. Along the way, Nathan and Richard bond and bicker while navigating, and detonating

‘The Long Dumb Road’ Film Review: Buddy Comedy Travels Familiar Path, But the Company’s Great
It’s not always a compliment to note that a movie feels like the right fit for Sundance. Festival faves often deflate when they reach the real world, unable to survive without the eager enthusiasm of film fans. The Sundance premiere “The Long Dumb Road” is undeniably cut from familiar cloth. But it’s got enough charm to keep it buoyant long after Robert Redford waves the last blogger goodbye. As with all road movies, its success rides on the company we’re required to keep. Happily, our two leads are unflaggingly delightful companions. The trip begins when naïve teen Nat (Tony Revolori, “The...

Anyway, without further ado, here’s the Top Ten…

Spider-Man: Homecoming becomes the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year

Earlier this month, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming became the highest-grossing reboot of all time, thanks in no small part to its solid opening in China, and now the film has overtaken Wonder Woman and Guardians of the Galaxy to become the biggest superhero movie of the year so far.
