Another Pride and Prejudice and Zombies Rises

1 January 2010

Success gives way to sequelitis. Quirk Books, the publisher behind Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith's "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," is prepping the release of the prequel "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls." Steve Hockensmith ("Holmes on the Range") takes over co-author duties, bringing zombies back to Austen's 19th century England. In this installment, we watch Elizabeth Bennet evolve from a naive young teenager into "a savage slayer of the undead." The concept of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" - which hilariously expands Austen's source material - has become a hit on the book scene, spawning imitators and inspiring Hollywood to do an upcoming feature film starring Natalie Portman as Bennet. »

Set Visit Teaser: Scream Queens Season Two

1 January 2010

Confession. This Shock writer was honestly not too familiar with the first season of VH1's Scream Queens prior to walking on set for this report on a cold, brisk December morning here in Los Angeles. But as a life long devoted horror fan, I was familiar (and intrigued) with the premise of the show and was impressed with actress Tenedra Howard's first big screen appearance in the opening scene of Saw VI , an opportunity which came about as the grand prize for last season's competition. Shepherding the show into its second season are returning executive producers Joke Fincioen and Biagio Messina with judge and acting coach John Homa also returning. However, due to scheduling conflicts, director James Gunn (off shooting his new feature Super ) and Saw veteran Shawnee Smith had to »

A Chas. Balun Tribute

30 December 2009

I first met Chas. in 1987 at a Fantaco Convention in Albany, New York. It was like finding a long lost uncle. I had already known of Chas. from his writing in "Fangoria" and his books "The Connoisseur's Guide to the Contemporary Horror Film" and "The Gore Score." He understood my love of horror films and everything that goes with that more than my parents ever would, and a long friendship started. When I moved to Los Angeles, Chas. was the first person I called, just to let him know I was here. We talked for a few minutes, I told him I was out here with no job, but was determined to work on movies and learn how it was done. I hung up and not five minutes later, Chas. called back telling me that he had recently talked with director Jeff Burr, and »

Chas. Balun R.I.P.

30 December 2009

One more to add to our 2009 obituary . Fangoria reports Chas. Balun passed away on December 18 at the age of 61. He was battling cancer. Chas. (Charlie) was a multi-hyphenate in the horror biz. An artist, a journalist and a fiction writer, he contributed to the likes of "Fangoria" and "Gorezone" magazines as well as the t-shirt company Rotten Cotton. His books on genre films enlightened readers, steering us clear from the detritus that polluted the horror landscape and pointing us to the meaty, more satisfying entries that, more often than not, shed the red, so to speak. "Horror Holocaust," "Beyond Horror Holocaust," "The Gore Score," and "More Gore Score" featured his acerbic wit and scathing criticism. The »

Horror Obituaries 2009

30 December 2009

While death is omnipresent in this genre we hold near and dear, we're always deeply saddened when we lose those who contribute to horror in front of and behind the camera. This year was especially taxing as you'll see below. To cap off our 2009 year-end coverage, let's reflect on the artists who have passed and the roles and films we'll always remember. David Carradine (December 8, 1936 - June 3, 2009) Son of actor John Carradine, also a genre vet, David's legacy spread across a multitude of genres, however, many will, of course, remember him for his turn in Kung Fu as Kwai Chang Cain. Throughout the '70s and '80s, he'd go on to star in various westerns, action and war films including Paul Bartel's Death Race 2000 (starring as the driver known as Frankenstein), Circle »

Ghostbusters 3 Arriving in 2011

29 December 2009

More talk from the Ghostbusters 3 camp to put a production timeline in perspective. Within the last year, there's been much speculation, bullshit fake fan videos that have been erroneously identified as pre-production FX (seriously?) and recent talk from Sigourney Weaver to keep us guessing as to where the story will take the characters next. Harold Ramis recently spoke to Heeb and had this to say about the project: Something's going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We'll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think »

The 10 Most Anticipated Horror Films of 2010

28 December 2009

Comparing the upcoming year, at the time of this writing, to 2009, the next twelve months look rather anemic. "Constipated" is how one horror director called 2010 when I spoke to him recently. And I see what he means. If you start your search for upcoming titles in our database beginning here , the year is top-heavy until June rolls around and it gets rather quiet. Chalk it up to a weak economy, if you must, and indecisive studios that have pushed some of their bigger guns around the release date map. Nevertheless, I've scratched up ten horror films I'm anticipating next year. The Wolfman is a clear choice for me, but that made last year's cut before Universal shooed it out of '09. I wanted to keep the list fresh. Also, I wanted to keep a few titles off that I've »
