People's Choice Awards Lack Drama or Humor, Despite "Glee"'s Wide Eyed Wonder
14 hours ago
Glee-ful cast
The People's Choice Awards were presented last night in Los Angeles, providing the least dramatic awards show of the season, since you know if the star is there, they're leaving with a trophy. Neil Patrick Harris let that cat out of the bag on Jimmy Kimmel last night for the six people in Nebraska that didn't know the show was canned.
Still, the show opened with Ellen DeGeneres picking up a tropy for Favorite Talk Show. Other notables were Hugh Jackman picking up the statue for Favorite Action Movie for Wolverine and smokin' hot Ryan Reynolds accompanying Sandra Bullock onstage when she accepted for The Proposal for Favorite Comedy Movie.
Still, the highlight for gay viewers was probably the cast of Glee at their first big awards show, picking up the trophy for Best New Comedy, Chris Colfer leading the way on stage, grinning ear-to-ear. I love »

Last night Neil Patrick Harris stopped in on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to plug the 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother, a career milestone for which he received a Cartier watch as a gift.
He also shared the heady news of his win for AfterElton.com's Gay Man of the Decade. For which he won a t-shirt. (Sorry Neil, we're on a budget!)
Harris was charming as ever and Kimmel was on his best game too. Check out the clip after the break!
So what did you think of Harris' Jimmy Kimmel Live! appearance? »

John Barrowman or Neil Patrick Harris? The Winner of the Big Gay Battle Is...
6 January 2010 3:09 PM, PST
Man oh man!
Who could have predicted our lil' ol' Gay/Bisexual Man of the Decade poll would go so explosively viral, drawing the attention of not just two of the top contenders, Neil Patrick Harris and John Barrowman, but also their legions of Twitter supporters, celebrity and otherwise, and media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal?
In his tweet, Neil Gaiman dubbed the brouhaha the Big Gay Battle, and it's a name we liked so much we adopted it ourselves. Hey, we even had our own hashtag!
So in the end, who won? We'll get to that soon, but first, let's talk about the significance of what this all means.
Kidding!
The winner is Neil Patrick Harris — and not really by a nose either, not unless it's Barbra Streisand's. (Hey, it's a gay poll, after all! We've got to get a dated Streisand reference in here somewhere. »

Book Reviews: The Best Gay Teen Novel Ever?
6 January 2010 1:01 PM, PST
I’ll get right to the point: The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd (Dial Books, $16.99) is the best gay teen novel I’ve read in ages, maybe ever.
It’s the story of 18-year-old Dade Hamilton’s last summer before college, the break-up of his ill-fated affair with a closeted "Sexican," and a new romance with a mysterious misfit.
Yes, it’s another novel about disaffected youth and the dysfunctional suburban wastelands in which they reside, but the fact is, these novels exist because disaffected youth and dysfunctional suburban wastelands really exist. And this is just about the best portrayal of both that I can remember.
Better still, the novel avoids the pitfalls that I think trap most writers, especially first novelists: it’s evocative, but without being a structure-less mess. And while the main character is real and flawed, he’s also — horror of horrors in some literary circles, »

"High School Reunion 3" Brings Gay Classmate Together With Former Tormentor. Oh, Goody...
6 January 2010 10:06 AM, PST
I'm betting there aren't too many of us out there terribly eager to revisit our high school days and for those of us who got picked on for being "different", whether it for being queer, skinny, fat or whatever, that sentiment is doubly true.
So when I first heard that High School Reunion 3 included Eric, "The Gay Guy" (pictured, above) who was going to confront John, "The Bully" I was less than thrilled. Throw in the super popular "Summer Girls", the "Cheerleaders" and the "Jocks", and I was definitely less than interested. But it was really the gay angle that had me worried.
Here are the two meeting for the first time in twenty years.
Okay, wasn't that fun. Fortunately, things get better from there and while I don't want to give anything away, let's just say that John isn't going to win any popularity contests with his old classmates. »

The 2nd Annual Gay People's Choice Awards Nominees
6 January 2010 9:08 AM, PST
Here at AfterElton.com we spend a great deal of time thinking and writing about movies and television shows with gay characters and major gay storylines. But the dirty little secret is that we gay pop culture consumers are also fans of lots of entertainments that might have little or nothing to do with Glbt representation.
Like a certain annual awards show with a similar name, we thought we'd ask the public (well, our public at least) to vote on what they considered the best of 2009 in this, our 2nd Annual Gay People's Choice Awards. The objective is to see how our readers' tastes in mainstream entertainment differ from those of a more general audience.
We're asking you to vote on your favorites in the traditional movie, television and music categories, but to liven things up a bit we've included a few special awards ("Worst Movie", "Favorite Lesbian", "Favorite Guilty Pleasure", etc. »

#biggaybattle Roundup; Final Fanart, Tweets, and Media
6 January 2010 8:01 AM, PST
This is the legen - wait for it - dary. Art credit: Jean Kang
What a week it's been. We started a little poll for Man of the Decade on December 23, and for two weeks, it quietly chugged along. Then somebody said 140 characters about it, and Boom! a meme was born.
We admit to being a little gleeful about the whole thing as it took off. It's not unusual for our pieces to get picked up by Jezebel, Entertainment Weekly, or Popeater, but it's not every day that The Onion A.V. Club and the Wall Street Journal blogs notice us. Yes, I'm more excited about The Onion noticing - I mean, how cool is that?
We appeared in at least two print newspapers, and Television Without Pity picked the whole thing up yesterday. Which is pretty cool, since they're powered by Bravo, and anybody who reads my stuff knows »

AfterElton Briefs: Italians Are Uptight, Kathy Griffin Booted Back to D-List, Adam Lambert's Brother Responds, and more
5 January 2010 4:24 PM, PST
This is upsetting?!?!? Time for a running gag...
Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.
Italian footballer (soccer) Jesus Datolo is facing disciplinary action and fines from his team for posing for gay magazine Romeo, above. Seriously? Do they not know the history of sports stars and gay promotion? Let me show them. Nick Youngquest wasn't fined for Attitude Magazine. I'm not sure how to go about revoking the Gay Card of one of the most prominent activists on the internet, but would someone get me the paperwork? Bil Browning over at Bilerico posted an incredible video of the out Gavin Creel singing a never released "Do You Remember" from a scrapped Peter Pan show, and he admitted he had to look up who Gavin Creel was. Seriously?!?! Somebody take his toaster oven. And his boyfriend! »

"Ugly Betty" Moves to Wednesdays and Brings a Special Guest
5 January 2010 3:18 PM, PST
What could possibly come between Marc and Amanda?
If you're just watching Ugly Betty when it airs on ABC (or whenever your DVR serves it up), you're still just getting a fraction of the funny. ABC also produces comedy with Mode After Dark, with the antics of Amanda (Becki Newton) as viewed through Mode's security cameras.
But my new love are the vodcasts, with Michael Urie and Becki sitting in her seriously overdone dressing room, answering viewer mail, and generally acting goofy. It's fun to see them off script, and they just seem so lighthearted and accessible.
We got word before Christmas that they planned a very special guest to celebrate the move from the wastelands of Friday programming to their new home on ABC's highly successful comedy block. And conveniently, the guest star lived on the same block. See that? I'm funny, just like they are.
In any case, »

"The Secret Life of the American Teenager" (2:13) You Don't Know What You've Got...
5 January 2010 1:10 PM, PST
First - How fierce is Molly Ringwald's hair?
Well, one of the shows I love to hate came back with a gay roar last night. It was messy, it was silly, but for some reason this show is to me what those Real Housewives of Peoria are to most people &$8212 irresistible. Still, there were at least four significant gay moments in ABC Family’s runaway hit last night. Plus, Amy only had 30 seconds of screen time, so that was a big plus.
School’s back. It’s unclear what it’s back from, summer, winter, something. Things are kind of timeless here. Amy and her mom and the babies are off visiting grandma. And none of the kids can concentrate on school. I wonder if it’s because they keep having conversations like this in chemistry class?
So they all decide, in separate groups, to ditch class.

Liveblogging "As The World Turns": Smell Ya Later!
5 January 2010 11:59 AM, PST
Before he heads back to spread joy at the school for the blind, Noah needs to yell at Luke just a bit more. Smell ya later, Luke! Smell ya later ... forever!
Join us for the fun, and refresh for updates!
2:05Pm Est: Holden and Molly are set to visit Meg, who's "resting" in a "facility".
Luke and the family tell Noah that they want to help him get used to his unsightness, but Noah has other ideas - a doctor in Dallas who may help restore his sight.
Molly and Holden prepare for the worst when they see Meg, but are shocked when they see her not in a straightjacket foaming at the mouth ... but knitting! Omg, it's worse than they thought! She smiles and tells them to come in. This would make a perfect horror movie - Meg escapes from the "facility" and hunts down Damian "Knit 1, Purl 2, You Broke My Heart, »

Five Reasons You Should be Watching ABC's "Better Off Ted"
5 January 2010 9:41 AM, PST
AfterElton.com reader giovannif recently lamented in the comments that he wanted to see ABC's very funny but rating's challenged Better Off Ted get some Ae love. We have covered the show a couple of times, but I agree with giovannif that Bot definitely deserves higher ratings than it is getting and I'm more than happy to do my part to save the show.
So here are five reasons you should be watching Better Off Ted -- plus the latest episode!
1) Out actor Jonathan Slavin
Slavin plays Phil, one of the nutty scientists who work for Veridian Dynamics creating all sorts of bizarre products that tend to cause a lot of problems for everyone involved. Phil is straight and married, though we are yet to see his wife, and Phil's primary relationship is with his fellow scientist Lem (Malcolm Barrett). They've definitely got one of those "bromance" relationships going on »

More "30 Rock" Scoop: Check Out Liz Lemon's Gay Nephew
5 January 2010 8:22 AM, PST
***Warning*** This post contains some mild spoilers about next week's 30 Rock episodes.
Yesterday we posted about the fact that Danny, Cheyenne Jackson's character on 30 Rock, was going to be hooking up with someone when the show comes back next week. We'd also been hearing for a while that Liz was going to turn out to have a gay cousin named Randy that she accidentally outed to his family. As a result, he needs somewhere to live and moves in with ... her!
Jeffery Self, Tina Fey, James Franco
Regular readers of the site might recognize Randy as none other than Jeffery Self from Jeffery and Cole's Casserole (watch episodes of the show here on Logo). Way to go, Jeffrey!
Btw, this is also the episode that features James Franco apparently playing himself. Hmm, could be interesting...

Exclusive: Meet "Spartacus: Blood and Sand"'s Intriguing New "Gay" Character
4 January 2010 1:31 PM, PST
****Warning*** This post reveals the identity of the gay character in the new Starz series Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Stop reading if you do not want to know their identity.
Anyone who knows even a little about ancient Rome, Greece, etc. knows that same-sex relationships were an integral part of those societies. Of course, that doesn't mean Hollywood hasn't usually chosen to ignore that particular aspect when doing movies or shows about the era. Think Russell Crowe's Gladiator or Gerard Butler's 300 which especially oozed homoeroticism without any actual homos. Meanwhile HBO's Rome included some girl/girl pairings but left out the guys.
Obviously, not every Roman epic need have "gay" content, but it would be nice if they were occasionally inclusive, not to mention historically accurate.
Fortunately, cable network Starz is about to the record straight -- so to speak.
In the fourth episode of the season (debuting »

#biggaybattle Achieves Full-Blown Meme Status With Fan Art
4 January 2010 12:14 PM, PST
Success Baby says so.
Sometimes things go viral, and it can't be planned or made to happen. The #biggaybattle, as Neil Gaiman was so kind as to title it, is one of those things.
And when things go viral, they generally get fan art. Success Baby at the top of this post is from a website dedicated to quickly generating fan art about subjects for blogs. I built the picture above myself. It's the modern day Crayola. Heck, LOLCats have probably made someone rich.
But I'm not that witty. That's what smart people do. Fortunately, we have many of those as readers and their fan art has started to appear about the #biggaybattle. We had nothing to do with it, but we like it!
The first one we saw was based on the Kanye West/Taylor Swift moment from the MTV Video Music Awards. Obviously Kanye is a Captin Jack fan. »

Liveblogging "One Life To Live": There's Got to be a Morning After
4 January 2010 12:01 PM, PST
Oliver and Kyle face life together the morning after they rocked the world, and as sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti (my undying love to whoever gets that reference), I'm sure they'll live happily ever after ... like all soap couples. Right?
Join us for the fun, and refresh for updates!
2:05Pm Est: Dorian is informed by Mitch that her dirty work is not done. Firing Bo was only the beginning.
Fub wakes up in bed to see Kyle staring at him and smiling. Oliver grins and asks "what are you looking at?" Kyle laughs and responds "my boyfriend". Oliver beams and says "I like the sound of that. I can't hang out tonight because i have plans with ... my boyfriend. My boyfriend the doctor." Kyle tells him "I am a good catch, aren't I?" Oliver makes the greatest Fish Head he's ever made, and shakes his head. »
