Recap: 'Heroes' - 'Shadowboxing'

It’s fitting that the main villain of this season’s “Heroes” can create sinkholes, since this week’s episode was all about fighting formless enemies. In “Shadowboxing,” the stories themselves didn’t quite overlap, but all featured fights against an invisible foe. Some were external, and a few were internal. Unfortunately, none were all that compelling. As “Redemption” reaches its halfway point, it’s high time for Samuel’s master plan to start revealing itself. All these feints, dekes, and stalemates are growing colder than Matt Parkman’s body in the back of that ambulance. [Full recap of Monday (Nov. 9) night's "Heroes" after the break...]  ... »

Exclusive: Magic runs out for ABC's 'Eastwick'

The magic has run out for ABC's "Eastwick."   Network sources confirm to HitFix that ABC will not be picking up a back-nine for "Eastwick," effectively canceling the first-year series.   The end of the road for "Eastwick" can hardly be considered a surprise. Despite airing out of ABC's highly successful "Modern Family"/"Cougar Town" comedy block, "Eastwick" has reliably squandered its solid lead-in.    In its most recent airing on Nov. 4, "Eastwick" averaged only 4.6 million viewers and a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demo. "Eastwick" has been the only first-run network drama to occasionally lose to NBC's "The Jay... »

Watch: Behind-the-scenes of HBO's 'The Pacific'

It may be a little early to start making predictions about the 2010 Emmys, but we're just going to go out on a limb and say that HBO's "The Pacific" may be in the running for an award or two.   Part of that conviction obviously stems from the fact that "The Pacific" comes from Playtone and DreamWorks, who produced HBO's Emmy-winning "Band of Brothers" and that the last thing Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman produced for HBO was "John Adams," which picked up 13 Emmys.   More than that, though, there's something about watching Hanks and executive producer Steven Spielberg... »

Listen: Stream Them Crooked Vultures' album in its entirety

It was only a matter of time: Them Crooked Vultures have been doing a bit of a strip tease of their album, track by track, but now they've gone full monty and are streaming the self-title set on YouTube. Check it out. The set is due in multiple formats next week on Nov. 17, but the crew was probably trying to get a jump on leakers. The quality is pretty good, though it will take us some time to process which tracks are our favorite -- "New Fang" is still a frontrunner. As previously reported, the supergroup of Josh Homme, John... »

Review: Bon Jovi's new album 'The Circle'

Unlike a lot of rock critics, I like Bon Jovi—and freely admit it. And when I haven’t liked them, my respect for them has carried me through until they delivered another perfect pop nugget like “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” that sent me on another pro-Bon Jovi wave.   For more than 25 years, Bon Jovi has been entertaining millions upon millions of fans—and they’ve earned every one of them. They write populist themes with broad appeal and deliver live in a way that few acts can; plus their work ethic is staggering.  When their popularity has sagged in... »

New image from Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' reveals some perspective

As can be deciphered from this latest image from Tim Burton's re-imagining of "Alice in Wonderland," the Red Queen's forehead and hair combined are larger than her torso. By a long shot. The teaser image was revealed today (Nov. 9) as one in a three-part series. In an effort to promote the 3D film -- due March 5 next year -- on Facebook, Disney has orchestrated its Facebook page around the Mad Hatter's demands: the other two images will be revealed once 7,500 "likes" are procured. A simple request when you're Johnny Depp. Also in the poster-graphic also features the White... »

Disney orders up another round of 'Jonas' from the Jonas Brothers

The Jonas Brothers have committed to whipping up second seasons of their Disney Channel shows "Jonas" and "Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream." Shooting for the former will begin in February, according to a press release, for a mid-2010 release, with returning young actresses Chelsea Staub and Nicole Anderson. The comedy series ran for 17 episodes this year. The latter, a reality show based around the group's tour schedule, is lensing now as the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009 continues through Europe. Kevin (22), Joe (20) and Nick (17) additionally just finished working on the sequel to their first, successful Disney original... »

Watch: Cobra Starship throw girls into the back of their van in 'Hot Mess'

We would have loved to see the audition process for this one: "Are you a hot girl?" "Can you act drunk?" "Can you act drunk and still be hot at the same time?" That particular demographic is the vodka-flavored center to Cobra Starship's "Hot Mess," which extols the many virtues of inebriated women. It's a natural follow-up to the rock band's last single "Good Girls Go Bad":  Maybe it's the same actresses. It's like a sequel. The premise of the clip has the worksuited group going around "exterminating" hot messes by throwing them into the back of their vehicle like 'tang-seeking... »

Thoughts on the 'Bored to Death' and 'Mad Men' finales

I don't know about you, dear readers, by my Sunday night TV viewing is about to become a good deal less enjoyable. Sure, we'll still have a few weeks of this top-notch "Curb Your Enthusiasm" season and a few weeks of another familiar-yet-intriguing "Dexter" season and we'll still have Fox's animated comedies and "Brothers & Sisters" until I can finally drop that one from my DVR.   But even with those shows, plus Sunday Night Football (and the start of the NBA and college hoops seasons), filling my time and clogging my DVR, they aren't going to take the place in... »

'New Moon's' Kristen Stewart admits she's at peace with superstardom

If anyone seems to have taken being under the "Twilight" microscope the hardest it's Kristen Stewart.  The teenage actress who'd first come to moviegoers attention in David Fincher's "Panic Room" had been on something of an indie movie tear before being cast as the iconic Bella in Catherine Hardwicke's big screen adaptation of "Twilight."  From the cast's first Comic-Con appearance to the surprise blockbuster's premiere Stewart seemed overwhelmed by all the media attention and intense fan frenzy.  And considering that she'd been around the business for as long as she had it was a bit surprising.  Well get ready, because that's... »

TV Ratings: Cowboys-Eagles game controls Sunday for NBC

Fast National ratings for Sunday, November 8, 2009.   After a couple weeks of ceding Sunday night to Fox's World Series coverage, NBC's Sunday Night Football telecast moved back into its usual position of ratings dominance. It helped that NBC's Sunday matchup was a rivalry game between the Cowboys and Eagles, as the network won the night in all key measures.   Among adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 6.2 rating, doubling up the 3.1 ratings for second place Fox and CBS. ABC's 3.0 rating was fourth in the coveted demographic.   Overall, NBC averaged an estimated 16.54 million viewers to go... »

Bon Jovi, Dashboard Confessional, Switchfoot lead rock heavy slate of Nov. 10 releases

It’s a small but mighty release week as several platinum acts, led by Bon Jovi, return with new collections. The rush to capitalize on the holiday shopping season is in full effect and won’t slow down until Santa’s sleigh arrives. Time was when the Tuesday before Thanksgiving was the last significant release date, but now expect titles from heavy hitters all the way through Dec. 22, when Mary J. Blige’s “Hip Hop Soul” comes out. In the meantime, here are some of Nov. 10’s top offerings.   Tori Amos, “Midwinter Grace” (Universal Republic): The Cornflake Girl puts her own spin... »

Is Aerosmith together or not?

We figure it’s as official an announcement as we’re going to get from Aerosmith. As rumors swirl about Steven Tyler’s departure from the band on the eve of its 40th anniversary, the boys from Boston have posted a Boston Herald story on their website about their future. The story confirms the Tyler and the rest of the band are on the outs ever since Tyler fell off the stage at a Sturgis, S.D. show several months ago. The rest of the group’s tour was cancelled due to Tyler’s injuries and the only gigs they’ve played were a big-bucks gig in... »

Watch: Taylor Swift's musical monologue on 'SNL'

If the powers-that-be were smart, they would re-record Taylor Swift's "Saturday Night Live" "Monologue Song," and push that puppy out onto iTunes. The song, performed (predictably) as Swift's opening monologue on the late-night comedy show, is actually a damn catchy one, and in it the pop star finally publicly addresses the Kanye-mtv VMAs snafu, in essence, with a "whatever can be said has been said." Meanwhile, as you can see in the clip, she's got a good sense of humor about the incident, though enlists the help of the SNL cast as her bodyguards should West bum-rush the stage again. She... »

David Fincher reincarnates 'Peter Proud'

David Fincher directing a full-on horror film? Sign me up now. David Fincher reuniting with the screenwriter of "Se7en" to update a flawed but fascinating '70s relic? I'm sooooo onboard. In fact, there's nothing about the news that David Fincher is considering directing a new version of "The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud" that is anything less than exciting to me.  Fincher gives good creepy.  Fact. Sure, it's another remake, and I'm as weary of those as everyone else, but this isn't just some hack knocking out yet another '80s slasher update because he's convinced there's a market for it.  Fincher is... »

Recap: 'Mad Men' Season Finale -- 'Shut the Door. Have a Seat'

8 November 2009 10:20 PM, PST

With the third season of "Mad Men" having come to its glorious conclusion, it's out with the old and in with the new. In "Shut the Door. Have a Seat," Don Draper lost everything familiar and came out on the other side bruised but chastened, down but not out, surrounded by associates yet more determined than ever to reestablish family. If Season 3 was about knocking Don down to size (and then ultimately to the ground), this season finale was about him starting to pick himself up again.    [Full recap of Sunday (Nov. 8) night's "Mad Men" season finale after... »

Kenny Chesney sets release of 3D concert film

8 November 2009 10:00 PM, PST

Last year, one of my favorite films was the amazing visual experience that was "U2-3D," and not because I'm a fan of the band.  I mean, I am, but that's not what made me love the film.  Instead, I flipped for it because I feel like it is a signpost on the road to the future of live performance. I live in Los Angeles, and any time I want a ticket to see anything live that is even remotely possible, I log onto the Ticketmaster website, enter my credit card information, and then weep bitter tears of failure.  No matter if... »

Robert Pattinson on 'New Moon' and the harsh, faster-paced 'Eclipse'

8 November 2009 9:36 PM, PST

When this writer first met Robert Pattinson, he was a relatively obscure British actor who'd received a tiny bit of notoriety from appearing in a "Harry Potter" flick.  It was April, 2008 and as we talked on the set of this tiny flick titled "Twilight" during a night shoot in the middle of a small Oregon town, he considered a scenario where he might not continue acting.  Perhaps he'd focus on the music side of career, perhaps not.  Needless to say, what a difference a year and a half makes. Arguably up there with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt as one... »

Recap: 'The Amazing Race' -- 'This Is the Worst Thing I've Ever Done in My Life'

8 November 2009 8:59 PM, PST

Poor Lena & Kristy. They were both mighty cute, but as "Amazing Race" teams go, they're memorable for one reason and one reason only: They spent 10 hours in a Swedish pasture unrolling bales of hay without ever finding a clue in a treacherous Season Six challenge. And they didn't even have the most memorable meltdown in the task. They're only memorable for having failed at the challenge.   That legendary Roadblock made a triumphant return on Sunday (Nov. 8) night's "The Amazing Race," producing the requisite exhaustion and tension, but no Lena & Kristy-esque failures.   [Full recap of Sunday... »
