Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence Head Back to the ’90s with Sheneneh and Wanda

Oh no you di'n't! I can't believe I'm about to say this, but Jamie Foxx and Martin Lawrence are teaming up for a comedy that will mean absolutely nothing to anyone over the age of 15. The two actors have signed on to bring two of the most enduring characters from their stand-up comedy days to the big screen: Sheneneh and Wanda! You may remember Martin Lawrence cross-dressing to play Detroit ghetto girl Sheneneh Jenkins from time to time on his sitcom Martin, while Jamie Foxx's flirtatious, cross-eyed Wanda was one of the more popular characters on In Living Color. Now the two of them will join forces in a feature film that is being fast-tracked by Screen Gems. Apparently this whole thing came about because Foxx and Lawrence created a fake trailer for the Bet Awards called "Skank Robbers" featuring the two women, and it was so popular that »

Fox Launching Interactive iPhone App to Provide Pop Up Trivia During Movies

It's no secret that Hollywood is looking to stay hip and connected to the teen demographic in any way it can. We've seen MySpace, Facebook and Twitter all figure heavily into movie marketing campaigns as of late, and also the introduction of various Bd-Live features on Blu-ray discs including the ability to watch movies with friends online. Now Fox is planning to launch a new social networking feature that incorporates pop-up trivia into the movie-watching experience. They are hoping this will appeal to the viewer's need for instant gratification, and also boost dwindling DVD sales as well. The feature is called FoxPop, and it will come as a freely downloadable application for the PC, Mac, and iPhone. While watching a compatible movie, the program will auto-detect and sync via audio input, then present trivia, photos and other content as the movie plays. Now before you get worried about distractions in theatres, »

Peter Berg to Direct Army of Two Video Game Adaptation

Over the past few months, we've seen director Peter Berg drop out of a couple of upcoming projects including the robot boxing film Real Steel [1], and the remake of Frank Herbert's Dune [2]. Clearly he's in demand after directing Hancock, but what exactly has he been freeing up his schedule for? Well, we already know that he's going to be directing Universal's Battleship [3] movie, but now in addition to a board game movie, it looks like he has added a video game adaptation to his list of potential projects as well. Yay? A recent article in Variety [4] examines some of the properties that EA is licensing out to TV, movies and comics. Among them is the previously announced big screen version of Army of Two, about two mercenaries working for the U.S. military who get caught up in a political conspiracy in the Middle East. We knew that Scott Z. Burns »

A Single Man Trailer

Prior to watching this trailer, I didn't know too much about Tom Ford's A Single Man except that it was one of three movies playing at Tiff this year with similar sounding titles (The Coen Brothers' A Serious Man and Brian Koppelman's Solitary Man being the other two). After watching this new trailer, I still can't say that I know very much about it, but in a way, that's actually a good thing. This is an artfully constructed trailer that relies more on atmosphere and imagery than plot elements to sell you on it (okay, and a little bit of Oscar buzz as well). Based on Christopher Isherwood novel, the movie stars Colin Firth as a gay college professor in the '60s who loses his lover and is stricken with grief. After a night out with his friend Charley (Julianne Moore), however, he starts to see the possibility of moving on with his life. »

Duncan Jones to Direct Source Code Starring Jake Gyllenhaal

A lot of people still haven't had a chance to see Duncan Jones' Moon, the indie sci-fi film starring Sam Rockwell, but from all the positive reviews [1], it's clear that critics are marking this as the arrival of an exciting and talented new director. The movie hits DVD [2] on January 12th, but in the meantime Jones has started to line up a number of new projects. A WWII submarine thriller called Escape From The Deep, and another science-fiction film called Mute had been previously announced, but now it looks like something else will take priority over both of those projects. Variety [3] reports that Jones has signed on to direct Source Code, a sci-fi thriller about a soldier who wakes up inhabiting the body of a stranger. He must relive a train bombing over and over again until he can find out who is responsible. Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to star, »

Man on Wire Director Hired for Exorcism Thriller The Vatican Tapes

You want more "found footage" horror? You got it! Lionsgate and Lakeshore Entertainment are prepping development of a new thriller called The Vatican Tapes, about an exorcism gone awry. The story, which was conceived by Chris Morgan (Wanted, Fast & Furious) and written by Chris Borrelli (The Marine 2), involves a tape that gets leaked from The Vatican with footage of this frightening exorcism. While it's unclear if the entire movie will actually be the footage itself, this week they've announced that they've hired Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker James Marsh to direct it. Marsh is best known for the fantastic 2008 doc Man on Wire, about Philippe Petit's tightrope walk between the World Trade Center towers, but most recently he directed Red Riding: 1980, a fictionalized crime thriller about the Yorkshire Ripper murders in England. I have to admit, I really like the sound of this, but great documentary directors don't always make »

David Fincher Reuniting with Writer of Seven for The Reincarnation of Peter Proud Remake

I know a lot of people are still unsure about the fact that David Fincher's next project is a movie about Facebook [1], but if that's not your cup of tea, his follow-up project should put you at ease. For his next movie, it looks like Fincher will be bringing back together the same team that worked on his 1995 thriller Se7en starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, in order to remake the 1975 film The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. According to Heat Vision [2], screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker will adapt the Max Ehrlich novel on which the movie was based, while Fincher will produce along with former New Line president of production Michael De Luca. The story centers on a college professor who begins to have visions of a previous life, and finds himself drawn to a woman and her daughter who are seemingly connected to his past. The original movie starred Michael Sarrazin and Margot Kidder, »

Monday Morning Box Office Report: A Christmas Carol Conquers, The Box Bombs

Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey managed to climb their way to the top of the box office this past weekend with their retelling of A Christmas Carol. Audiences responded despite the seemingly early holiday release, and although the opening weekend didn't quite live up to expectations, it will probably continue to steadily make money over the next two months. Michael Jackson's This Is It dropped to #2 but still made $14 million, while The Men Who Stare At Goats and The Fourth Kind weren't far behind. Paranormal Activity fell to #5. Disappointing news for Richard Kelly as his latest film The Box had a pretty lacklustre weekend, earning just $7.8 million, perhaps due to the fact that it was a difficult movie to market. The biggest story, however, appears to be the indie film Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire, which opened at #12 but it made $1.8 million on just 18 screens -- »
