R.I.P. Chas Balun (1948-2009)

31 December 2009 10:04 AM, PST

It saddens me to report that writer, artist and all around horror advocate Chas Balun has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 61. It was reported by Fangoria that Chas lost his battle with the disease on Dec 18th. Chas was an inspiration to so many folks who work in the industry and he was instrumental in helping me to get to where I am today as a horror fan who gets paid to write about what he loves. And I've never even met the man. I first knew of Chas from his columns in the print mags Fangoria and Gorezone, along with his books like The Gore Score and The Deep Red Horror Handbook. Chas was a fan first, and he relished nothing more than championing the little guy, or that Italian horror flick you've never heard »

Top 9 of '09: Surprises

31 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST

Like any year, 2009 had its predictable moments.  The Friday the 13th remake was average at best.  Saw released another installment for Halloween.  A slew of remakes were announced or went into production, leaving die-hard fans mourning the reputation of the classic originals.  But the year also had its share of unexpected good news able to bring a smile to even the most disillusioned fans. Let's go out on a high note by reflecting on some of our favorite surprises of 2009, in no particular order. Fatherhood Didn't Ruin Dexter In fact, it made it better.  Dexter didn't go soft having a family; it upped the stakes for him.  It gave him something to care about, something to be »

Top 9 of '09: Disappointments

30 December 2009 5:00 AM, PST

The year in horror notched some great strides for genre filmmaking (Paranormal Activity, anyone?) but sadly, there were disappointments galore. For starters, some of the year's highest-profile horror pics turned dismal results at the box office. Too many anticipated films got the shaft with bare-minimum theatrical runs. And what was with all of those lame vampires? See what got our blood boiling this year in horror in no particular order. Drag Me to Hell's Box Office After breaking box office records and grossing almost $2.5 billion with his last three consecutive films (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3), you've got to think Sam Raimi was a little underwhelmed to gross a paltry $86 »

You don't hear too much about the black metal scene in India, but if the Mumbai-based Demonic Resurrection is any indication of the twisted talents at work in that country, the rest of the world should be sitting up and taking notice right freakin' now. Top 9 of '09: Television

29 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST

The year is winding down, and it's time to look back on 2009 with our favorite spooky, scary, bloody moments on television.  Some of them are the usual suspects, like Dexter and True Blood.  Others are a little unlikely.  Read on for our list presented in alphabetical order and let us know if you agree... Castle – "Vampire Weekend" Firefly hero Nathan Fillion pays homage to the role that made him sorta-famous when his Halloween costume is "Space Cowboy" – something his daughter reminds him was something he wore "five years ago" and "it's time to let it go."  He and Beckett look into the murder of a young "vampire" (complete with fangs) who »
