Secret Identity: Casting The 'Preacher' Adaptation

With director Sam Mendes allegedly joining James Bond's next adventure, what does that mean for his involvement with the "Preacher" adaptation?

Assuming Mendes' deal goes through, he'll have to push back his work on "Preacher" or the movie will go to another filmmaker. Either way, it sounds as if movement on the fan-favorite project is stalling yet again, as was the case with the planned HBO adaptation.

But "Preacher," widely considered one of the greatest comic book series of the 1990s, deserves to get a big debut on the big screen. With that in mind, we thought it appropriate to give the project the old Secret Identity treatment and offer our casting suggestions for five of the book's most prominent characters.

Willem Dafoe Says 'There's Plenty More To Do' With Green Goblin, Weighs In On 'Spider-Man 4' News

"Daybreakers" star Willem Dafoe dropped by Splash Page HQ yesterday to chat us up about the film, which hits theaters Friday (January 8). While he was here, we managed to sneak in a few questions about — you guessed it — the "Spider-Man" films and the villain that kicked off Sam Raimi's blockbuster, web-friendly franchise, Green Goblin.

Would he be up for making a return appearance? After all, no one stays dead in the comics world. And what about those "Spider-Man 4" production delays? The actor touched on all of it in our exclusive interview.

"It all depends on the story," said Dafoe of the likelihood that we'll see him again. "The Green Goblin, there's plenty more to do, because that's not so well defined. And the Norman Osborn character is a good, solid, half-comic, half-dramatic character, so I could always revisit that."

"I don't think about it so much," he added. »

'Siege' #1 Error, 'Youngblood' In 3-D, And 'Mouse Guard' Progress In Today's Twitter Report

In all of the excitement getting "Siege" #1 out this week, a page of text got mistakenly duplicated in the issue's backmatter. Marvel put the corrected pages up on Marvel.com, but Tom Brevoort, Brian Michael Bendis and Chris Eliopoulos had brief discussion on Twitter about where blame should rest.

In other news, work-in-progress tweets have been all the rage for the last 24 hours. "Mouse Guard" creator David Petersen, Gail Simone, Mark Brooks and Jock all tweeted updates about the projects they've been chipping away at. The retweets are all lined up for you after the jump along with Rob Liefeld's thoughts on "Youngblood" in 3D and some advice from Todd McFarlane.

This is your Twitter Report for January 7, 2009.

"Siege" pt. 1: @eliopoulos Do not blame @TomBrevoort for the Siege screw up. The blame lies at my door. When things go bad, editors get the blame.

War Machine Creator Says 'Iron Man 3' Could Use 'Demon In A Bottle' Story, Debunks 'Iron Man 2' Rumor

Editor's Note: With "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — concluding with Layton's thoughts on some "Iron Man 2" casting rumors and what might be in store for "Iron Man 3."

As one of the definitive “Iron Man” creative teams, it’s not surprising that several concepts from Bob Layton and David Michelinie’s “Iron Man” run will be prominently featured in the upcoming “Iron Man 2” While Justin Hammer's presence (as played by Sam Rockwell) has long been confirmed, Layton was recently able to address the rumor that Kate Mara was cast as Bethany Cabe in the movie.

'Green Lantern' Begins Shooting In March

In brightest day, through blackest night, "Green Lantern" officially has the green light.

The DC Comics adaptation, which stars Ryan Reynolds as pilot-turned-superhero Hal Jordan, has received the official go ahead from Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, according to the blog of visual effects supervisor Karen Goulekas.

"'Green Lantern' got the official green light today," she reported yesterday. "And not a second too soon — only 10 weeks out from shooting!"

Given the swirl of rumors and reports around the topic of "Green Lantern" — from the hiring of Martin Campbell as the film's director to the eventual casting of Reynolds, who already has a comic book franchise of his own in the form of "Deadpool" — it's hardly surprising that the movie has received the official green light from the powers that be. Still, with delays bogging down other high-profile superhero projects, one can never be too careful about counting their »

New 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World' Image Hits The 'Net — Here's What We Know About It!

Universal Pictures has released an official shot from "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," Edgar Wright's live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic book series.

And if you're wondering why you've read the first five volumes and still can't place this scene, you're not alone. [Spoiler Alert]

Here's the photo's official description:

(Foreground) Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) fights two of Gideon's minions as Gideon Graves (Jason Schwartzman) watches with Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) in the amazing story of one romantic slacker's quest to power up with love: the action-comedy "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".

Yup, that's Gideon Graves in the background, as played by Jason Schwartzman, and if previous reports are any indication, this could be the mysterious pyramid set we've heard so much about. That would mean this shot comes from the film's final scenes — a part of the story that hasn't been published yet, and could differ »

'Thor' To Open Same Weekend As 'Spider-Man 4'?

The loyalties between the superheroes of the Marvel Universe are apparently quite flexible, as Marvel Studios' "Thor" has officially moved in on "Spider-Man 4."

According to Variety, the Norse God of Thunder's big screen debut — originally set for May 20, 2011 — has been pushed two weeks earlier to May 6, 2011. The new date is the same as the original release date for Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man 4," the Sam Raimi-directed flick currently suffering through some delays that could put its release date in jeopardy.

With it now uncertain that Peter Parker's next adventure won't hit theaters on time as originally planned — though Sony has yet to officially move the release date — it seems that the powers behind "Thor" saw an opportunity for an early summer start.

Despite appearing like an act of internal rivalry, the report states that Paramount simply did not want to wait on an official release date change on "Spider-Man 4 »

Brian Bendis Explains Why 'Avengers' Movie Fans Should Check Out 'Siege'

6 January 2010 3:14 PM, PST

"Siege," Marvel Comics' next big event series, kicks off today with an explosive first issue. Last month, we showed you some of the art from the personalized "Siege" #1 that arrived at Splash Page HQ, but now you can check out the issue for yourself.

According to "Siege" writer Brian Bendis, the event should be of interest to more than just the regular Marvel faithful — anyone looking forward to the 2012 "Avengers" movie might want to pick it up, too.

"For those hungry for the 'Avengers' movie — see what I'm doing here — this 'Siege' event will really whet your appetite," laughed Bendis.

One of the current architects of the Marvel Universe, Bendis ran through the long list of "event" stories that have shook the publisher's status quo over the last decade, and promised that they were all leading up to this one.

'Darksiders' Game Headed To Hollywood... And Comics?

6 January 2010 12:31 PM, PST

By Russ Frushtick

From Multiplayer: Yesterday's release of "Darksiders: Wrath of War" is apparently just the first step for Thq in their quest to spread the franchise far and near.

Speaking with VG247, comics veteran Joe Madureira, who acted as creative director on the game, said that Thq has been actively shopping it around and has already gotten some bites.

Said Madureira, "We’ve gotten some interest from Hollywood, we’ve talked about doing a comic series." He went on to say that Thq is really in charge of those negotiations, not the developer, Vigil Games.

War Machine Creator Describes His 'Iron Man 2' Set Visit And The Dispute He Settled While He Was There!

6 January 2010 11:32 AM, PST

Editor's Note: With "Iron Man 2" just a few months away from hitting theaters, MTV News contacted War Machine co-creator Bob Layton to discuss the character's upcoming debut on the big screen. The conversation covered a wide range of subjects that we're rolling out this week in a four-part series — continuing with today's tale of his "Iron Man 2" set visit and the disagreement he moderated while he was there.

Longtime “Iron Man” writer and artist Bob Layton is recognized as one of the most signi

'Spider-Man 4' Advice, Randy Johnson Memories, And A 'Youngblood' Update In Today's Twitter Report

6 January 2010 10:29 AM, PST

Brian Michael Bendis may not be writing the script for "Spider-Man 4," but that doesn't mean he doesn't know how he would approach the film. Rob Liefeld, meanwhile, remains extremely confident that Bretty Ratner is the right director to bring "Youngblood" to theaters, and according to a tweet yesterday, Ratner is still on board.

In non-movie-related posts, Chris Ryall reminisced about retiring pitcher Randy Johnson's famous bird-killer pitch, which is quite a sight to see if you've never watched the replay. Scope out those retweets after the jump along with Tom Brevoort's take on Matt Smith in "Doctor Who" and a contemplation of Disney's line-waiting policies.

'Mass Effect: Redemption' Review

6 January 2010 9:31 AM, PST

In just a few short weeks, gamers will explore the galaxy once again with Commander Shepard in "Mass Effect 2." No need to wait until then to reacquaint yourself with BioWare's refreshingly original sci-fi scenario however. On newsstands today is issue one of "Mass Effect: Redemption," the fruits of a collaboration between's the game's developer and Dark Horse Comics.

Let's get the simple facts out of the way first: if you haven't played or aren't familiar with the "Mass Effect" universe, "Redemption" is not the best place to start. The beginnings of a story laid out in the first issue entertain, but newcomers will be lost without the proper context. The first game excelled at introducing players to BioWare's multi-layered intergalactic society in drip-feed helpings. "Redemption" expects that you know why Elcor talk the way they do and what bone the humans have to pick with everyone else.

As re-introductions go however, »

Michael Cera Says He's Seen All Of 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World' (Sort Of)

6 January 2010 8:01 AM, PST

With "Youth in Revolt" bringing Michael Cera to theaters this week, it's only natural that when we had a chance to chat with him during the film's red carpet premiere, Splash Page had to sneak in a few questions about another little film he's involved in: "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World."

"When we were shooting, they were cutting the movie as we were shooting," Cera told MTV News when asked how much of director Edgar Wright's finished film he'd seen. "[Wright] would bring down his laptop every day and show us stuff. So, I've kind of seen the whole thing out of order, but I haven't seen anything cut together... except on the last day, he showed the whole crew a 40-minute reel."

Hype for the film seems to be at an all-time high right now, with many actors, filmmakers and comic book creators name-dropping the live-action adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley »

First 'Gantz' Trailer Reveals Spooky Black Sphere And Suited Stars

6 January 2010 6:46 AM, PST

Back in October word got out that Hiroya Oku's hyper-violent ongoing sci-fi manga "Gantz" would be entering the realm of live-action features with a two-film franchise directed by Shinsuke Sato and written by Yusuke Watanabe. Now, a 15-second teaser has hit the Web, giving fans a brief look at what the future might hold for the film series.

"Gantz" follows a cynical Tokyo college student after his apparent subway tunnel death and subsequent reanimation at the hands of a mysterious black sphere. He and others like him are gathered in an anonymous room in the city, provided with weapons and loosed on bizarre alien-kiling missions. Very few are successful.

While the teaser posted on YouTube doesn't reveal much about the film, there's a quick shot of stars Kazunari Ninomiya ("Letters From Iwo Jima") and Ken'ichi Matsumaya ("Death Note") in their black combat suits, which appear to be pretty faithful to the source material. »

'Zombieland' Writers To Script 'Deadpool' Movie

6 January 2010 6:01 AM, PST

File this one under awesome news — the writers of "Zombieland" are taking their bloody appetites to "Deadpool."

According to Variety, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick — the writing duo behind "Zombieland" and Sony's proposed "Venom" movie — have been hired to pen the screenplay for "Deadpool," the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" spin-off starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular merc with a mouth.

Reese and Wernick are reportedly sticking closely to "the mythology of 'Deadpool' given that Reynolds is a huge fan and protector of the property." While Reynolds has already stated his desire to stay true to Deadpool's comic book roots in the past, it's still great to hear that Reese and Wernick are on board with the actor's vision.

The time line for the movie's production is still up in the air, as Reynolds is well on his way towards playing Hal Jordan in "Green Lantern," which should begin »

'Spider-Man 4' Sources Confirm Release Date Uncertain, Script Still In Progress

5 January 2010 4:22 PM, PST

Last month, a report hit the 'Net that "Spider-Man 4" production had been put on "indefinite hold" due to problems with the script — specifically, the choice of villain for the next chapter in the Sony Pictures franchise. Asked for comment on the report, the studio confirmed that production had indeed halted for the holidays, but denied that there was anything endangering the project's production schedule. Now, it seems, the story has changed yet again.

According to a report on Deadline Hollywood, production continues to be stalled on "Spider-Man 4" due to a difference of opinion between director Sam Raimi and the studio over the film's script, and now the film could miss the mark for its intended May 5, 2011, release date.

This report has been partially confirmed to MTV News by an informed source close to the film who said a May 2011 premiere has now become uncertain, and significant work is »

Sam Mendes Is New James Bond Director, But What About The 'Preacher' Adaptation?

5 January 2010 3:01 PM, PST

Poor "Preacher." For such a beloved comic book property, it sure has gone through a number of woes on the road from comic to live-screen adaptation, with the latest snag possibly arriving in the form of director Sam Mendes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendes, the man currently attached to take the reins on "Preacher," is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise, with hopes for filming to start as early as June of this year.

Mendes landing the job is a decisive victory for Bond fans, who just recently suffered through a rumor that the latest film would be delayed due to financial difficulties at MGM. But if the deal goes through, what exactly does it mean for Mendes' involvement with "Preacher" and the film's future as a whole?

Certainly, if Mendes is on board and MGM is seriously eyeing a June production start, »

Preview: 'Conan: The Weight Of The Crown' By Darick Robertson

5 January 2010 1:31 PM, PST

Over the course of his comics career, Darick Robertson has tackled outlaw journalists, morally depraved superheroes, an X-Man, and the most famous gun-slinging vigilante around — but his next project harkens back to a time before his resume was filled with some of the most popular characters of the last few decades.

Next week, the co-creator of "Transmetropolitan" and "The Boys" turns his eye to Robert E. Howard's famous barbarian, Conan, in a one-shot story that he scripted and drew, titled "Conan: The Weight Of The Crown."

MTV News caught up with Robertson to find out where his Conan tale takes the bloodthirsty Cimmerian, and why he'll leave a host of bodies in his wake this time. Dark Horse Comics has also provided Splash Page readers with an exclusive preview of "Conan: The Weight Of The Crown."
