Stronger – Review

22 September 2017 3:33 AM, PDT

“Boston Strong” is the phrase that came out of the remarkable, resilient response of the people of Boston after the terrorist bombings at the 2013 Boston Marathon. “Boston Strong” spirit sparked admiration across the country, making the whole city seem heroic. Stronger is a true-story drama about one of the survivors of that attack, Jeff Bauman. Bauman lost both legs above the knees to the bomb but he not only survived, he helped identify one of the bombers.

Jake Gyllenhaal gives a valiant performance by as Bauman, but director David Gordon Green gives the audience a different kind of story than they might be expecting. Green’s previous films include Snow Angels (2007) and All The Real Girls (2003), and the director seems determined to fit this true story about a historic event into that dramatic mold. »

Columbus – Review

Columbus is not a film about the Italian explorer but about an American city named for him. No, not Columbus, Ohio, but the lesser-known Columbus, Indiana. This small Midwestern city is home to a surprising number of buildings designed by big names in mid-century Modern architecture, such as Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Deborah Burke, Harry Weese and others.

St. Louisans might recognize Eero Saarinen as the designer of the Gateway Arch but architecture buffs will know those names are some of the biggest of the Modern style of architecture. If you are a fan of mid-twentieth century architecture, or of Columbus, Indiana, then Columbus is the film for you. But even if not a fan of either, viewers might give this thoughtful, »

Kingsman: The Golden Circle – Review

21 September 2017 7:43 PM, PDT

Everything seems to be on track for cinema’s final months of the year. Sure, that demented clown ruled the box office for a couple of weeks, but Ben and Jake are here now with some real “Oscar bait” flicks that will usher in the season of serious film works. Hmm, not so fast. Looks like another comics-inspired franchise is blasting into the multiplex. Now, the Jla and Thor are still many weeks away, but this series is more Bond and Bourne than Marvel and DC. Oh, and it’s from graphic novel/ movie adapter veteran Matthew Vaughn. He injected most welcomed energy to the Marvel mutants with X-men: First Class in 2011, just a year after spicing up that genre with the R-rated Kick-ass. His follow-up in 2014 was the “origin/training” tale of a super-secret (“veddy veddy” hush-hush, you know) organization whose operatives are impeccably dressed, well-mannered gentlemen (think TV’s John Steed… »

Friend Request – Review

21 September 2017 5:53 PM, PDT

A campfire tale for the social media age, Friend Request is Hollywood’s latest attempt to portray the internet as a scary place. It’s a conventional and predictable horror yarn, though well-executed enough that if you go in with lowered expectations, you may have some fun with it. Friend Request begins promisingly, introducing protagonist Laura Woodson (Alycia Debnam-Carey) in a lively and well-edited montage showing how she blends her real life with the internet. Laura is an outgoing popular college sophomore with plenty of friends including close ones Olivia (Brit Morgan), Izzy (Brooke Markham) and Gus (Sean Marquette), boyfriend Tyler (William Moseley), and over 800 more on Facebook (though the word ‘Facebook’ is never actually uttered in the film). She accepts a friend request from a fellow student, the damaged goth misfit Marina Nedifar (anagram of ‘A Friend’ – and played by Liesl Ahlers), who seems to do little except stare »

Brad’S Status – Review

21 September 2017 4:26 PM, PDT

With awards season approaching it’s time to get serious at the multiplex, at least for some actors that may be best known for rowdy raunchy comedies. That may be the case for Ben Stiller who’s playing this flick’s title character. Mind you, there’s still some funny stuff in this story, we’re not in heavy, somber tragedy territory at all. It’s just that Ben is playing an “everyman”. a fellow that many of us know, or “down deep” the person staring back at us from the mirror. Oddly, this man is constantly reflecting on his past, his regrets, and choices. These concerns and worries make up the bulk of Brad’S Status.

The title Brad is played by Mr. Stiller. Brad Sloan is sliding toward the big “5-0” and shares a home in Sacramento, CA with his lovely wife Melanie (Jenna Fisher) and their eighteen »

In the wake of the sexual revolution and the rise of the women’s movement, the 1973 tennis match between women’s world champion Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men’s-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as the Battle Of The Sexes and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time, reaching 90 million viewers around the world. As the rivalry between King and Riggs kicked into high gear, off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.

The fiercely private King was not only championing for equality, but also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, as her friendship with Marilyn Barnett (Andrea Riseborough) developed. And Riggs, one of the first self-made media-age celebrities, wrestled with his gambling demons, at the expense of his family and wife Priscilla (Elisabeth Shue). Kinji Fukasaku’s Battles Without Honor And Humanity -The Blu Review

19 September 2017 6:17 PM, PDT

Review by Roger Carpenter

After experiencing huge critical and commercial success with the five-part film series collectively known as Battles without Honor and Humanity, the Toei Company asked director Kinji Fukasaku to continue the series. The original five films were based upon several magazine articles, themselves based upon the memoirs of an actual member of the Japanese mafia, or yakuza. The films proved to be so successful that Fukasaku essentially created a new subgenre known in Japan as Jitsuroku eiga, “actual record films,” or films based upon true tales of real-life adventures. But having run out of material with the first five films, Fukasaku would have to turn to more fictionalized stories as well as new characters if he wanted to continue the series. This three-film series became known as New Battles without Honor and Humanity and, though there have been other films in the series, these are the last directed by Fukasaku. »

Re-animator – The Blu Review

18 September 2017 8:21 PM, PDT

Review by Roger Carpenter

Earlier this summer I wrote a review for Arrow’s release of The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. I didn’t review the film itself because I assumed the readers who might click on the review already knew the film well and were mostly concerned with whether or not it was worth picking up another copy of the film. I’m going to make the same assumption about Re-Animator, perhaps the only film in the history of cinema to ask the MPAA to surrender its R-rating so it could be released in unrated form (actually, re-released).

The film itself is a horror-comedy classic based on one of H.P. Lovecraft’s lesser known works entitled Herbert West: Re-Animator. At the time of its theatrical release it was considered cutting edge in the area of gore as well as altogether outrageousness. I suspect Lovecraft, who was so adept »
