Disney's 'Sword in the Stone' Live-Action Remake Finds Director (Exclusive)
Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, perhaps best known for directing the zombie thriller 28 Weeks Later, is in negotiations to helm The Sword in the Stone, Disney's live-action reimagining of the studio's 1963 animated fantasy.

Bryan Cogman, a writer-producer on HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, wrote the script for the project, which is being produced by Brigham Taylor (The Jungle Book).

Stone was the final movie released by the studio before Walt Disney’s death; it takes a lighthearted and musical view of the legend of King Arthur, focusing on the young Arthur being mentored by the magician Merlin.

It was loosely based on T.H....

Logan Lerman in Talks to Play Dan Rather in JFK Drama ‘Newsflash’
Logan Lerman is in negotiations to play newscaster Dan Rather in “Newsflash,” centered on CBS’ coverage of the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

If the deal goes through, Lerman will portray Rather as a co-worker of Walter Cronkite in the movie. Rather had joined CBS in 1962 and had been appointed chief of the southern bureau in New Orleans.

Seth Rogen came on board last month to portray Cronkite. David Gordon Green is directing the drama from Ben Jacoby’s script. Former Warner Bros. production president Greg Silverman is producing through his Stampede Ventures, along with Adam Kolbrenner of Madhouse Entertainment.

The network broke into its broadcast of “As the World Turns” for Cronkite to announce that Kennedy had been shot in Dallas. CBS returned to the soap opera, then interrupted it again with Cronkite’s announcement of Kennedy’s death: “From Dallas, Texas, the flash, apparently official: President Kennedy died at 1 p.m. Central

Tamara Jenkins Delivers Infertility Dramedy ‘Private Life’ for Sundance Opening Night
Director Tamara Jenkins has always been interested in the family dynamic. The indie classic “Slums of Beverly Hills” was about failed upward mobility in the late 1970s. “The Savages” was about disinterested siblings who need to solve the problem of an ailing father.

After a ten-year break, Jenkins returned to open the 2018 Sundance Film Festival on Thursday night with “Private Life,” about a reproductively-challenged couple who need to start a family before they eviscerate the two-person unit they’ve already got.

Kathryn Hahn plays Rachel, a 41-year-old novelist who...

Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1

Competition Will be Stiff for New Releases With 'Jumanji' Set to Remain #1
This weekend sees Warner Bros.'s 12 Strong and STX's R-rated heist thriller Den of Thieves hitting theaters, both of which are targeting male audiences, which means they'll also have to contend with the NFL conference championship games this Sunday. Additionally, a couple of notable expansions are taking place this weekend along with Roadside's moderate release of Forever My Girl. That being said, all appear as if they'll be settling in behind last weekend's #1 and #2 films, as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Post are expected to hold on to those top two spots. Jumanji topped last weekend's box office after dropping just 24.5%, and this weekend it should continue to hold on rather well. While we're currently anticipating a drop around 32% and a fifth weekend around $19 million, don't be surprised if it hangs on a little better than that. The film should top $315 million domestically by end of day Sunday,

'Three Identical Strangers': Film Review | Sundance 2018

Almost invariably, the most important element of a good documentary is fascinating subject matter, and Tim Wardle unquestionably zeroed in on that with Three Identical Strangers. Chronicling the startling history of Robert Shafran, Edward Galland and David Kellman, triplets separated at birth who grew up oblivious to one anothers' existence, the film starts out like a jaunty sitcom, featuring three likable lugs with toothy grins who might have stepped off the set of Welcome Back, Kotter. They look like they were cloned from Andy Samberg. But as the euphoria of reconnection subsides and disconcerting questions begin to arise, a mystery...

No Date for You: Rihanna Gets Blocked by Sixers Star Joel Embiid

Sixers big man Joel Embiid dropped 26 points on the Celtics last night in road victory — and then proceeded to dunk on Rihanna. In a post-game interview with TNT, Embiid was asked if he wanted to say anything to the young woman “who told you to come back when you’re an all-star.” After making the all-star team earlier on Thursday, Embiid didn’t feel like giving his celeb temptress — long speculated to be Rihanna — a second chance. “She denied me back then, so why go with her again?” said an amused Embiid. “I have to pass that and move...

‘Shawshank,’ ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Sans-Men Are Perfect Replies to No-Women ‘The Last Jedi’

‘Shawshank,’ ‘Saving Private Ryan’ Sans-Men Are Perfect Replies to No-Women ‘The Last Jedi’
Backlash from a certain segment of the Internet to blockbuster movies that cast women (as well as people of color) has led to some pretty horrible things, like online harassment. It also leads to ridiculous, even hilariously stupid things, like someone editing “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” to remove all the women. That edit of “The Last Jedi,” which was made from a bootleg recording of the movie made by someone watching it in a theater, purports to be “basically The Last Jedi minus Girlz Powah and other silly stuff.” It slices the movie down to 46 minutes, and apart...

Jordan Peele says Donald Trump ‘Is Racist’

Jordan Peele says Donald Trump ‘Is Racist’
President Trump recently said he’s the “least racist” person out there — but Jordan Peele isn’t buying it. The comedian and “Get Out” director didn’t mince words when asked about the president in an upcoming interview with CBS Sunday Morning. “You know, the truth is the president is a racist, which is – very sad – and – I’m disheartened by policies that are xenophobic and sexist, and the – we’re – there – there are many strides backwards every day,” Peele told Tracy Smith of CBS. “What does give me hope is – you know, so Obama said –...

That Time Brad Pitt Didn’t Play God for Steven Spielberg (Podcast)

In the late 1990s, GQ described a movie too crazy to be real: Brad Pitt would star as God. Elisabeth Shue would play his mortal love interest, and Tom Hanks his mortal enemy. Steven Spielberg would direct. The story was satire — but it fooled a teenage Matt Donnelly, who went on to become co-host of our “Shoot This Now” podcast, in which we talk about stories we want to see turned into films. In our latest episode, we talk about the Spielberg-Pitt-Shue-Hanks-God project that wasn’t to be, and how the article about the fake movie could make for a great...

Here’s What Steve Forbes Says About Report That Stormy Daniels Spanked Trump With His Magazine (Exclusive)

Here’s What Steve Forbes Says About Report That Stormy Daniels Spanked Trump With His Magazine (Exclusive)
Steve Forbes shared some thoughts about the reports that former adult film actress Stormy Daniels used a copy of Forbes magazine to spank Donald Trump during a year-long sexual relationship she said began in 2006. “The magazine has many multiple purposes,” Forbes told TheWrap on Thursday. “It’s an unusual way to get investment advice.” Daniels, a one-time U.S. Senate prospect in Louisiana, made headlines after the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump lawyer Michael Cohen paid her $130,000 in October 2016 to keep quiet about the alleged sexual encounter. Daniels, who previously denied claims of an extramarital affair with Trump, offers lurid details...

'Den of Thieves': Film Review

Testosterone drips off Christian Gudegast's cops-and-robbers thriller that has all the phony authenticity of its Atlanta locations pretending to be Los Angeles. Co-stars Gerard Butler and Pablo Schreiber, playing alpha dogs on opposite sides of the law, seem to be competing for which of them can be the most bulked-up, macho badass onscreen. The loser is the audience for Den of Thieves, an over-the-top crime saga mainly indicating that its writer/director has seen Michael Mann's Heat too many times.

There could well be a run on Southern California banks as a result of the onscreen graphics informing us that a...
