50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 1

27 October 2009 5:54 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.

There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Hey, Paulington: Halloween Blu-Rays, Horror Theme Parks, and the Worst Movie Ever Made!

Hey, Paulington! Is a Cinephile advice column that looks at life, love, and the movies. Anyone can send in a question, and Paulington will answer it. Sure, it's a really cryptic, cliched concept that has been around since the dawn of time. But we're spicing it up a little bit. Topics can range from anything: Sex, violence, haints and taints, your favorite movie! Paulington doesn't care. He's basically doing it for a paycheck. He's not really an expert on anything. But he sure does know a lot about movies and human nature. You can send your questions to (as in, click on the giant red letters and you will automatically be sent to his email):

Hey, Paulington!

And he will be sure to answer all of them in a very timely manner. Here are this week's letters. Enjoy!

Hey, Paulington!

trailer break: ‘Plan 9’ teaser trailer

19 October 2009 9:21 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

So these guys from Darkstone Entertainment wanna remake the Ed Wood anti-classic Plan 9 from Outer Space, except as: a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood’s film without resorting to camp or parody. I thought camp and parody were the spirit of Ed Wood. God helps us in the future. Plan 9 does not yet have a release date, but it’s looking to be a DVD and/or online release, not a theatrical one. »

The Forgotten: Humanoid Rights

14 October 2009 5:48 PM, PDT | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

End—Point of beginning, Webster.

Let's be honest: you're never going to watch Creation of the Humanoids, a 1962 zero-budget sci-fi stiff hand-tooled by loving amateurs, in which inept actors, including cult icon Dudley Manlove (Plan 9 From Outer Space: "Stupid stupid stupid!") stand stock-still for minutes at time, mouthing unspeakable dialogue.

But let's not be honest, let's be optimistic: you might be tempted. On learning that this was Andy Warhol's favourite film (pop fact number one) or that it anticipates all the most interesting ideas of Blade Runner (by twenty years) or that it achieves a kind of reeling, coshed euphoria through shuffling between genius and ineptitude at 24fps (blink fast and miss the good bits, blink fast starting one frame later and miss the bad bits), you might seek this movie out. It can be obtained.

So we have to proceed carefully, with spoiler-free observations above the »

Well, sorta. Darkstone Entertainment announced last year it's intention to shoot Plan 9, a remake of the Ed Wood cult "classic" Plan 9 From Outer Space. While the film won't officially role until April of 2010, director John Johnson has put together the following teaser trailer to give you an idea what they have in mind. Trailer: Ed Wood's Plan 9 from Outer Space Remake

10 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

Back in 1959, Ed Wood made the sci-fi movie "Plan 9 From Outer Space" and it has since been known as the worst movie of all time. Fifty years later, director John Johnson decided that it's worth remaking it, but as a serious-minded retelling of the original story. The original revolves around aliens re-animating the dead in order to kill Earth's population. The new version, simply called "Plan 9," will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but promises to be largely character-driven. "Even if Eddie was a little off in his filmmaking skills, you cannot deny his passion," said Johnson. "I feel a strong camaraderie for the man and his work, and hope that I can make a film that would be as loved by audiences today as the original was for his generation. Only this time with its true intention." Watch the promo trailer below »

‘Plan 9 From Outer Space’ Teaser Can’t Afford Steak

9 September 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I have to admit that I didn't even realize someone was remaking Plan 9 From Outer Space, mostly because I go outside once and a while (mostly to swim, to get my kite-flying team up to snuff, and because it's criminal to drink Texas Tea indoors). Luckily, my friend and drinking partner Peter Hall over at SciFi Squad has enlightened me so that I, dear reader, can enlighten you. Possibly inebriated himself (it's been hours since he started in at 11am), Peter posted up the teaser trailer for a no-budget remake for the flick. After all, why would you invest any money into something that never appealed to anyone in the first place? Alright, to be fair, a comedian and his hilarious talking robots seemed to dig it. But other than that, seriously, what the hell is going on in my life? Yeah! Take that radio out! The scene where the alien/zombie/mutant crashes through the »

Yes, Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is being Remade! Hurray? See the Teaser/Trailer!

9 September 2009 11:16 AM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

"Plan 9 from Outer Space" from writer-director Ed Wood Jr. is considered one of the worst films ever made in cinema history!

Released in 1959, the film's plot is about aliens re-animating the dead in order to take over mankind! Now, this cherished cult classic is getting a remake makeover just in time for its 50th anniversary from director John Johnson and Darkstone Entertainment.

The remake is just going to be called "Plan 9" and this is going to be a serious take on the film. Johnson and company will pay homage to the spirit of Wood's film without resorting to camp or parody.

According to the "Plan 9's" official website:

The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven. Johnson's goal for "Plan 9" is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but »

'Plan 9 from Outer Space' Remake Trailer

9 September 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

This one has been creeping up on us for a while now, but we were been holding off until we were presented with some concrete proof that we felt was worth discussing. Proof has arrived this morning in the form of a teaser trailer. Darkstone Entertainment is hard at work on a remake of the Ed Wood classic(?) Plan 9 from Outer Space. See the trailer below. From www.plan9movie.com - The Director John Johnson is going to have a live chat feed at 8pm on Sunday, September 13, 2009 Eastern Standard Time to answer questions and discuss the film and teaser trailer. It will be held at this link… I guess I'd be lying if I said that this one didn't even have me slightly intrigued. What do you think? »

Trailer for remake of Ed Wood's Plan 9

9 September 2009 6:01 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Ed Wood's cherished cult classic and often labeled "worst film ever made," Plan 9 From Outer Space, just got a sprucing up from Darkstone Ent. and the first trailer is here. Looking a lot more polished than I think we were all expecting, the film looks to include some decent enough re-animated corpse action, but it pays far less homage to Wood's original than I was expecting. But hey, maybe that's a good thing.

Synopsis:

Evil aliens attack Earth and set their terrible "Plan 9" in action. As the aliens resurrect the dead of the Earth to destroy the living.

The reboot is directed by John Johnson (who is actually directing Stephen King's Dark Tower next).

Trailer after the break.

Update: Plan 9 Remake Misses Target, In the Works

9 September 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Update: You can now watch the teaser trailer below! Decent start. I'll admit, it doesn't look as cheap as I expected. There's some zombie mayhem, a nod to the original...and a floating "thing." What separates this from any of the undead fare we've seen in the last five years remains to be seen. Darkstone Entertainment puzzled the genre community last year when it announced a redo of Plan 9 from Outer Space , Ed Wood's infamous cinematic turkey. Joe Johnson was spearheading this effort with an eye to tell a "serious-minded" story under the title Plan 9 . It was also slated to hit us on September 9 of this year. Darkstone doesn't have a film, but they have promised us a teaser trailer which is hitting on that date. "We are now shooting on... »

Plan 9 Trailer Has Landed

Plan 9, the remake of Ed Wood's so bad it's funny Plan 9 From Outer Space, has released it's first trailer. Written and Directed by straight-to-dvd horror director John Johnson, Plan 9's original and remake plot has "evil aliens attack Earth and set their terrible "Plan 9" in action. As the aliens resurrect the dead of the Earth to destroy the living." Johnson will also tackle the Stephen King novel series of The Dark Tower. This will be his true test as he wants to Plan 9 to be a more serious story-telling of Ed Wood's vision. I must say, so far so good. »

Teaser Trailer for Serious Minded Plan 9 Remake

9 September 2009 2:39 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Today is 09-09-09. What better day to premiere the first teaser trailer for Plan 9, Darkstone Entertainment's "serious-minded" attempt to remake the film hailed as the worst motion picture of all time, Edward D. Wood Jr.'s Plan 9 From Outer Space? Yes. A remake. A serious-minded remake. Can't comprehend such a thing? That's because of your stupid minds! Stupid! Stupid!

Filmmaker Joe Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment got it in his head to remake Ed Wood's notorious stinker and do so with an emphasis on making it a more serious thriller. Does he pull it off? See for yourself with the trailer below.

My personal thoughts: Looks far more polished than I expected for a low budget remake of the worst movie ever made. The radio broadcast of Criswell's opening speech is a nice touch. Not sure what to make of that computer animated floating thing other »

'Plan 9' Turns 50; RiffTrax Screens in Color

8 September 2009 3:51 PM, PDT | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Plan 9 from Outer Space turns 50 tomorrow, and what better way to commemorate The Worst Film of All Time's golden anniversary than watching it how it was intended—on the big screen. RiffTrax will be showing a national, special encore presentation for Plan 9 (in color) on Oct. 8, constantly riffing it with their tongue-in-cheek wisecracks. It's pretty much a voiceover commentary from the guys who did Sci-Fi Channel's "Mystery Science Theater 3000." You can't claim you're a film buff if you have no idea who director Ed Wood is. MovieLine wrote up a piece about the auteur's consistently crappy films, which eventually won him critical acclaim through Plan 9. Our own Harry Medved, who co-authored The Fifty Worst Films of All Time has gotten a lot of flak for not...

Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Original Bad Movie We Love Turns 50

8 September 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Plan 9 From Outer Space, Edward D. Wood Jr.'s legendary turkey in which alien humanoids in model-kit flying saucers resurrect Earth's recently deceased... in a peaceful bid to convince humanity not to develop a weapon that'll destroy the universe... by exploding sunlight. That famous plot, while an oddball cross between The Day The Earth Stood Still and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, is the least schlocky element of Wood's opus, which, among its litany of cinematic sins, features a cemetery of toppling cardboard gravestones, blinking dead people, boom mic shadows so frequent they ought to credited as supporting players, stitched-in footage of by-then-dead Bela Lugosi and lines like, "A flying saucer? You mean the kind from up there?"

Wood wrote and directed his sci-fi schlocker in 1956, but it didn't limp into cinemas for almost three years, and then only about 20 prints were struck. »

The Room – So Bad It’s Good (Kind Of)

7 September 2009 11:32 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

On Saturday I had one of the funniest nights of my entire life. I went to see a film called The Room at The Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End. The Prince Charles will always be a special place for me and thousands of people in and around London. It happens to be one of the few remaining indie cinemas in the world and a damn great place to watch films. Any cinema that can name Quentin Tarantino as a fan must be doing something right.

Anyway back to this wonderful film that I went to see. I have always loved to watch films that fall in the category

…So bad it’s good…

I am a huge fan of the cult Canadian television show Mystery Science Theatre 3000, which is about a scientist that runs experiments on a human by subjecting him to really awful movies. The »

Get a First Look in December at Kurt Angle's End Game

3 September 2009 3:59 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

The December DVD release of End Game sees the continuation of the grand tradition of casting pro wrestlers and reality television contestants in starring film roles. Olympic gold medal winning amateur wrestler turned professional wrestler Kurt Angle stars as a psycho-sexual serial killer stalking a stripper played by "Survivor: Amazon" winner Jenna Morasca. I can assure you it is every bit as good as it sounds.

Quite a run for pro wrestlers in genre films of late. Last month brought us the horror comedy Dark Rising with WWE's Christian and this month will see the release of Albino Farm co-starring WWE's Chris Jericho. Now Tna's Kurt Angle joins the fray as a master of disguise serial killer stalking a stripper while playing mind games against the cop hot on his trail.

I scored perhaps the first review of director Bruce Koehler's End Game and let me tell you it »

Plan 9: A Night of Riffing Ed Wood

21 August 2009 7:24 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

My chest still hurts thirty minutes after leaving the theatre my chest still hurts from laughing so damn much.  The source of such pain? Rifftrax Live presents Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Broadcast from the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tennessee, the event was sent live to 433 theatres.  I set out with fellow Fangoria staffer Bekah to join the faithful in Glen Allen, Virginia.  One thing is for certain if the Glen Allen theatre was any measure of attendance, the Rifftrax crew sold out in all 433 theatres.

The evening was hosted by Veronica Belmont, with special musical guest Jonathan Coulton and guest of honor, Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Referred to as the Citizen Kane of bad movies, Plan 9 is the story of aliens, zombies, and a dead heroin addict actor only made watchable when it’s being properly Riffed!

District 9 Vs. Plan 9: A Chart Comparing the Best and Worst of Science Fiction

14 August 2009 11:30 AM, PDT | Pastemagazine.com | See recent PasteMagazine news »

In the last few weeks, you may have seen ominous "For Humans Only" posters adorning bus stops and benches in your city, or "Non-Humans Seen In The Vicinity" signs plastered at your local cineplex. They're all part of the viral marketing campaign for Neill Blomkamp's science-fiction opus District 9, which hits theaters today. And while D-9 is shaping up to be one of the highest-rated flicks of the year, it's worth remembering that this summer marks the 50th anniversary of the release of one of the worst movies (sci-fi or otherwise) ever made: the legendarily awful Plan 9 From Outer Space. The terrible script, slapdash special effects, and uniformly stilted acting has made it a cult classic, not least of all because it was horror-meister Bela Lugosi's final film role.

These two movies are more alike than just having a "9" in their titles. Both use science-fiction to examine the human condition, »
