MoviesOnline caught up with Korean pop star Rain at the Los Angeles press day for his new film, "Ninja Assassin.” The film is directed by James McTeigue from a screenplay by Matthew Sand and J. Michael Straczynski and produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski brothers. “Ninja Assassin” also stars Naomie Harris, Ben Miles, Rick Yune and legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi.
Rain plays Raizo, one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge.
The role of Raizo called for an actor with a special intensity, who could convey a lot of emotion in a very subtle way. »

Nicolas Cage: Bad To The Bone
By
It’s an inevitable event in every accomplished artist’s life: if you go back on the timeline of their existence and stop in adolescence, almost all of our greatest actors, writers, filmmakers, musicians and painters went through tumultuous, tortured teenage years, often scorned, almost universally ridiculed by their peers and elders alike for the cardinal sin of being “weird.” Most people run from their inner nerd as they grow into adulthood, masking it behind toned muscle, fine clothing and the right haircut, struggling to be that cool guy or gal whom we knew had all the answers and the clearest skin back when such things started to be de rigeur in our lives (and if you live in Southern California, continue to be).
Nicolas Cage is that rare movie star who not only never seemed to care if he was cool, »

Above: Farber's painting A Dandy's Gesture (1977).
Farber’s 1969 Howard Hawks essay––as hinted earlier––lodges a wry double self‑portrait: as he summons his own birthplace for a joke about small‑town provincialism, his praise of the filmmaker’s mobility and speed conjures his own termite activities as a writer and painter. His film criticism is personal, even autobiographical, though of a deflected sort that edges into allegory and fever‑dream.
In A Dandy's Gesture (1977), one of Farber’s two “auteur” paintings focused on Hawks, he glances at––often through toys and miniatures––images from the director’s films: a plane crashed into a chocolate candy mountain, from Only Angels Have Wings; a tiger, from Bringing Up Baby; an elephant, from Hatari; a boat, from To Have and Have Not; and newspaper layout pages, from His Girl Friday, with gangster Johnny Lovo (from Scarface) in the headline. But following the »

11/17 ~ Todays special boys and girls. Are you one of them?
Mischa, Marty and Rachel
1897 Frank Fay, aka Mr. Barbara Stanwyck. The theory goes that their troubled marriage was the basis of A Star is Born. That story is so big it's practically it's own franchise. I can't stop thinking about it today: Stanwyck through the lens of Gaynor, Garland, Streisand. Yummy!) Even if it's only an urban La legend, I love to think about it. Fay, a popular comedic actor, was also the originator of the Harvey role (on stage) before Jimmy Stewart got to it.
1901 Lee Strasberg, the hugely influential acting teacher that helped popularize "The Method" Students included... well, basically a whose who of late 40s / early 50s giants of the silver screen.
1905 Mischa Auer, very tall actor of oversized comic turns. You'll remember him from the blissfully funny My Man Godfrey and best picture winner You Can't Take It With You »

Kissing. I want to bring this series back. Where is the time?
Someone has recorded my dreams! It's Michelle Pfeiffer's make-out sessions in the movies, compiled by the great pfansite, Pfeiffer the Face
Mmmm, Pfeiffer lips. The only person who doesn't love them is Pfeiffer herself "I look like a duck"Head on over to Pfeiffer The Face to vote in the poll for your favorite Pfeifferian smooch.... but someone get Pacino off of her first. He's practically eating her face* in Frankie & Johnny and he wasn't so nice to her in Scarface, either come to think of it.
* In Pacino's defense she is delicious. Even Emma Thompson thinks so. Remember that 90s interview when she was asked who she would like to be paired with if she played a lesbian? [src] Oh, God, well, lots of women, because I love women so much. I think that because of my »

There are John Ford people, and there are Howard Hawks people. Me, I'm more of a Howard Hawks guy. A workmanlike director who came from a screenwriting background, Hawks made stories that were less interested in myth-making than in the quirks of human interaction. From the gangster drama Scarface to the classic screwball comedy of His Girl Friday, Hawks made a bewilderingly wide range of movies that feature some »

MTV debuted the first full clip from the much-anticipated Joel Silver-produced action flick "Ninja Assassin" on Friday night (September 4) on "Behind the Screen," and for anyone who saw it, you can't say the film won't live up to its title. Swordplay and stunts galore, even in the heat of oncoming traffic — this one's got the goods. And at the center of it all, a man who needs just one name: Rain.
The young Korean actor is already a pop-culture phenomenon in his native land. Now, with his first starring role, he seems poised to earn some new fans in the States. Eagle-eye fans of the pop star/ actor caught him in his first studio production last year, in the big-budget spectacle that was "Speed Racer. »

There are plenty of different kinds of montages in the language of film, and they can fill you in on everything from the emotional state of your characters to a wacky makeover. So while a good montage sequence will explain everything you need to know in the most economical way possible, one of my favorite kinds is the "Rise to Power" montage -- which brings me to Scarface. I love Brian De Palma's crime opus for so many reasons, but I think when it comes to the art of the montage, I have a soft spot for cheese -- and it doesn't get much more pungent than Giorgio Moroder, the patron saint of 80's movie music.
By the time the power chords of Moroder and Paul Engemann's Push it To The Limit kicks in, we've already been watching Tony Montana work his way up the criminal ladder and »

New cast in Kervorkian film: The cast of the new film about the high profile doctor, Dr. Jack Kervorkian, who fought "...to establish the right to die for terminally ill patients..." has announced an expansion of its cast. The made-for-tv film is entitled "You Don't Know Jack," and it will be directed by Barry Levinson. As announced "back in May" the title role will be filled by Al Pacino. Recently, "Susan Sarandon and John Goodman have also joined..." I think this is some brilliant and solid casting. Who can think of a better person to play Dr. Kervorkian than Pacino; who can play everything from intense caricatures of evil from a coke-fuelled gangster in "Scarface" to the Devil himself in "The Devil's Rejects." He can also show incredible humanity like in "Scent of a Woman." Both Sarandon and Goodman are solid actors who I feel are underrated talents. As great »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had »

Another random sampling of ladies hitting the red carpet or being caught by the paparazzi these past few days...
Kathy Bates was not at the press day for Chéri. But that's good. I was experiencing sensory overload anyway. Imagine if I had been made to feel even crazier than I already did about being in the same room with Michelle Pfeiffer. I didn't need Bates there as a freaky "I'm your no. 1 fan" reminder of the obsessive vibe I was probably giving off (uhhhh) New Topic!
Remember how fun Bates was on Six Feet Under a few years back? I kind of want her to do another TV series which is uncommon for me, given that I like my film actresses to stay put.
Sacha Baron Cohen, excuse me, Brüno at a photocall in Spain. That outfit... he really can't help himself. I'm drawn to the "too much" factor, I think. »

The first full clip from Michael Mann's Public Enemies is now online. Just follow the link here.
The scene is a full-blown night shoot-out complete with tommy guns, broken glass, and a heck of a lot of bullet holes. FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) and his team attempt an ambush outside the forest hideout of gangster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). In terms of style, the scene seems to borrow not only from Scarface (the 1932 Howard Hawks version), but also the first big shoot-out scene in The Godfather: Part II, which sees Al Pacino diving for cover indoors while shooters ambush from a wooded area outside.
Public Enemies is based on the Bryan Burrough book Public Enemies: America's Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI, 1933-34, which tells the stories behind the rise and fall of Dillinger in the 1930s. Melvin Purvis pursued Dillinger and eventually »

Michelle Pfeiffer has revealed that she secured her role in Scarface by making Al Pacino bleed during a screen test. The Witches Of Eastwick actress made the admission on David Letterman’s chatshow that she “sliced and diced” the actor, The Huffington Post reports. While promoting her new movie Cheri, the 51-year-old also said that originally Pacino did not want her for the character of Elvira Hancock in the 1983 picture. However, the pair shot a screen test (more) »

Michelle Pfeiffer told David Letterman how she landed her role in 'Scarface' by making Al Pacino bleed. Appearing on 'Late Night' Tuesday night to promote 'Cheri,' Pfeiffer said that Al Pacino already didn't want her cast in the role of Elvira when she was asked to screen test. Shooting an argument scene where she clears a table of dishes, Pfeiffer finished the take and saw blood everywhere. As the crew rushed her to see where she'd been cut, she looked up and realized it was Pacino who was bleeding, thanks to her gestures and dish throwing. And that's when, she says, Pacino's affection towards her turned and she got the job. Watch:... »

The director of the 1985 film talks about the new director's cut of the Al Pacino film
Sometimes, in the movie business, things just don't work out the way they should have, and one such instance would be the box-office and critical bomb Revolution. The film starred Al Pacino, right off the heels of Scarface, and also starred Donald Sutherland, Natassja Kinski and Joan Plowright in this epic tale set against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. Director Hugh Hudson had come off such hits as Chariots of Fire and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes also, so you would've thought this would be a massive hit... but it wasn't even close. The film, which cost an estimated $28 million to produce, took in less than $350,000 at the box office in 1985, and the overwhelming failure of the film apparently even cause Pacino himself to go on an acting hiatus, »
