Won't win him any new fans, but devotees of Waits will enjoy, 2 October 2006

Being a massive fan of Waits' records and yet never having seen him live, I didn't really know quite what to expect with this performance film. Granted, it was a little disorienting at first but I eventually got into the swing of things. Tom Waits isn't any ordinary "singer-songwriter". He touches upon so many different styles and topics yet manages to have a consistent tone throughout. Most of the songs in the film are from the three "Frank" albums ("Swordfishtrombones", "Rain Dogs", "Franks Wild Years"). Still, this documentary is probably only for either die hards of Waits or serious indie film fans.

This isn't the perfect concert film. First off, Waits has beautifully poetic lyrics and it is unfortunate that they are often incomprehensible. I realize Waits has never sounded like Pavoratti, but on some of the footage he seems to be merely shouting. Also, it feels a tad overlong. That being said, its obvious Waits is an incredibly unique and talented entertainer and is quite adept at performing. The film makes me hope I'll be able to catch him live sometime. Plus, he has a bizarre yet hilarious sense of humor. Worth tracking down for fans. (7/10)
