Grimmupnorth 09: Review of The Graves

2 November 2009 3:42 PM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Year: 2010

Directors: Brian Pulido

Writers: Brian Pulido

IMDb: link

Trailer: link

Review by: projectcyclops

Rating: 6 out of 10

Director Brian Pulino’s latest horror/thriller, The Graves, is a tale of two sisters on a road trip to celebrate older sibling, Megan (Jillian Murray), landing a marketing job in New York. Her little sister Abby (Clare Grant) keeps a video diary starting with them leaving their local comic book store, hitting a rock club and setting off for adventure. The drive down south from Pittsburgh takes them to a diner outside Unity; a long abandoned gold mining community that serves as a self-toured tourist exhibit. The diner is called Screamers, “and their burgers are killer”.

As soon as they sit down to order they notice a bullish black priest (played by Tony ToddCandyman, Night of the Living Dead ‘90) enter, along with a crying teenage girl, who he angrily tries to calm-down. »

iMurders and Confusion: A Movie Review

1 November 2009 9:55 PM, PST | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

Director: Robbie Bryan.

Writer: Robbie Bryan, and Ken Del Vecchio.

Have you ever heard that saying: "if you have nothing good to say then don't say anything at all?" Well, if this reviewer followed this motto then we would not have an insightful review of iMurders, a limited released film that is now available on DVD as of October 14. Also, a film that weaves far too many plot devices in a short ninety-eight minute run time, while commenting on the anonymity of the internet iMurders is just passable as a horror feature. Can the actors save this sinking script? Let us have a look.

Warning: only brief attention will be given to the plot as touching on all the plot devices would easily fill a page and a half. Let us say that a cheating husband kicks off a revenge plot with several innocent members of a Facespace chat room »

Halloween List-Making Invades The MTV Newsroom

30 October 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

For this week's final Halloween movies list, I decided to turn hit up the real superstars: my co-workers here in the MTV Newsroom who keep this great ship moving every damn day. After the jump you'll find recommendations and reminiscences from around the office. If you're game for some heavy reading, make sure to check out the last write-up, detailing Joel Hanek's pick: "Ernest Scared Stupid." Oh yes, he went there.

As for myself (MTV Movies Blog editor Adam Rosenberg), it's a toss-up. To this day I still have occasional nightmares relating to "Candyman," the Bernard Rose-directed, Virginia Madsen-starring horror flick based on a tale by novelist Clive Barker. There's something uniquely terrifying about the Candyman's ability to attack at any time, day or night. When horror can touch you even in the relative safety of sunlight, that's something to fear.

The other one that still gets me, »

See 'Seduth' Creators Barker, Monfette in Person this Thursday

28 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If your calendar from here to Halloween isn't already filled with candy-fueled bacchanals, come to Meltdown Comics' Sunset Blvd. location in Los Angeles on Thursday evening for an in-store appearance by Clive Barker, Chris Monfette and Ray Zone, who collaborated on a new comic book entitled Seduth. Barker, who previously worked on adaptations of his own work and original material in the medium, enlisted Monfette's help to come up with a new, original story, while Zone expertly rendered images for it - in 3-D, no less.

Barker's public appearance just days before Halloween seems remarkably appropriate given his career-long commitment to the 'dark arts': in addition to his work in comics, he's not only a renowned novelist, but a filmmaker, having directed Hellraiser and Nightbreed, and effectively created Candyman. Monfette, meanwhile, is also working on an adaptation of Barker's short story Down, Satan, and wrote an original script entitled Deep »

27 October 2009 4:45 PM, PDT | FEARnet | See recent FEARnet news »

You didn't think Halloween would come and go without a new project from horror legend Tony Todd, did you?  The Candyman stars in Splatter, a web series that will debut on Netflix.com on October 29th.  The series – which allows viewers to choose who lives and dies, and will stream for free, even if you're not a Netflix member – is produced by Roger Corman, written by Richard C. Matheson, and directed by Joe Dante. We chatted exclusively with Tony about his role in Splatter, how he keeps his cool on an intense set, and if those Toolbox Murders and Hatchet 2 rumors are true. How did you get involved with Splatter? Splatter was brought to my manager's... »

Tony Todd Talks Splatter

Conducted by Phil Fasso and Mike Cucinotta on October 26, 2009

So we're sitting here in The Frightquarters waiting for Tony Todd to report in. We interviewing him via telephone so no need to repeat his name five times. We tried it, it didn't work. (Ok, ok... we only got to 4 and turned the lights on.)

A funny thing pops up on our telescreen: An old doc on 'Bride of Frankestein', hosted by Joe Dante, starring Clive Barker and featuring Bill Condon, all of whom have worked with Todd. Barker and Condon having been involved in 'Candyman' and 'Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh', and Dante having recently directed him in 'Splatter', a new 3 episode web series, produced by Roger Corman and debuting exclusively for free on Netflix on October 29th.

Excl: Tony Todd Hears Scream of the Banshee

26 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

While talking with Tony Todd ( Candyman ) this afternoon about his current turn in the Netflix horror series Splatter , the actor filled us in on a number of upcoming projects. One that sparked some excitement from him came about when we mentioned After Dark's acquisition of The Graves (pictured) which he stars in alongside Bill Moseley. "Isn't that great? It looks like I might be doing another project for After Dark," he revealed. "I have a meeting with them this week and it's called Scream of the Banshee ." The project, penned by Anthony C. Ferrante ( Boo ), was reportedly supposed to be kept in the bag until it was unofficially announced last week via various outlets that Automaton Transfusion helmer Steven Miller was directing. Update on Corman and Dante's Splatter

15 October 2009 3:47 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

After doing a little digging, I found out some more good stuff about the Roger Corman/Joe Dante web series Splatter.  A look at the official site shows that the series will be interactive;  between episodes, viewers will vote for who lives and dies.  This is reminiscent of William Castle's Punishment Poll in Mr. Sardonicus.  As mentioned in our previous story, Corey Feldman will star, but I also discovered he'll be joined by The Candyman himself, Tony Todd.  The project also has a prestigious genre writer in Richard Christian Matheson, son of famed Twilight Zone writer Richard Matheson.

I'm a huge fan of both Dante and Corman's outputs, and it's great to see the two working together after many years (Corman appeared in Dante's Looney Toons Back In Action, but let's pretend I didn't mention that movie). With some big names from the genre involved, this is sure to be a worthwhile project. »

Nobody Shows Any Old Horror Movies In NYC - Except All Of These:

5 October 2009 2:22 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

A fellow writer on another site pointed out something today: We like to complain that there isn't any good horror movie programming going on in NYC, but there's almost always something going on if you look hard enough. Of course, you're not likely to see catch NYC's finest horror programming on many of the other sites, seeing as all those shockers are far too centrally located in disgusting California. (I see what you did there...) Who has the time to search through the hundreds of theater listings in Manhattan to find a good batch of flicks playing. We do! We do!

There's the Scary Movies 3 Film series at the Walter Reade Theater by Lincoln Center (classy!), the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam) has a Creepy Cat series coming up and a number of other genre flicks programmed for October, and The Sunshine Landmark Cinema in Manhattan Always has a midnight cult-flick screening every Friday-Saturday-Sunday, »

"Candyman" Remake On the Way?

1 October 2009 12:06 PM, PDT | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Before you guys get over-excited, we have yet to confirm this as 100% true.  I received an e-mail today from a guy who claims to be a close friend of Clive Barker.  He stated that the writer of "The Forbidden", the short story the original "Candyman" was based upon, is planning a reboot for the movie and our source even claims Barker plans to direct.  That would be f#$king awesome!  Again, we have yet to confirm this, so consider this to be a rumor for now.  We're going to investigate and see if we can't get some confirmation.  The original "Candyman" is one of the best horror movies of all time and if there are plans to remake it, Barker is the only guy I would trust to do it right. »

Smash Cut to screen at the Trinity Of Terrors!

The much-talked about H.G. Lewis-inspired Smash Cut has been added to our Fango Film Fest for the inaugural Fangoria Trinity Of Terrors taking place October 30 through November 1 at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas!

Able Whitman (David Hess - appearing at The Trinity!) is a horror-film director whose movies are panned by critics and audiences alike — until he starts killing people and using their body parts as props in his new flick.

Now, only intrepid Smash Cut. reporter April Carson (Sasha Grey) and celebrated private detective Isaac Beaumonde (Jesse Buck) stand between the demonic director and his unquenchable thirst for butchery at 24 frames per second!

Inspired by the career and filmography of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Smash Cut is a gore-splattered satire of the blood sport known as filmmaking.

This director's cut bleeds!
