Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Violence & Gore

This movie contains many fight scenes in which evil creatures are killed with swords and arrows. Notable scenes:

A fight through a dark mine and caves, in which many grotesque goblins are killed. Some shots show arrows embed into foreheads. One character cleaves the head off of an orc, with a fountain of blood spraying from the neck, although this scene is dark.

Another fight through a forest leaves many men-like Uruk-hai dead and strewn around. A fight between one character and the leader of the Uruk-hai is particularly violent with an arm and a head being cut off.

A character is shot by several arrows in the chest and back, his wounds are quite bloody and he dies shortly afterwards with his eyes open.

Overall, the movie has a rather dark and intense atmosphere due to its many conflicts combined with a pretty high body count.

Profanity

There are no swear words in this film.

There is a scene in which the Hobbits are in a pub and people are having pints of ale. Several characters occasionally smoke pipes.

There are several frightening scenes due more to tension than images.

There are a couple of jump moments. A scene in which a friendly character's face briefly turns grotesque suddenly and without warning is a notable example. The change is accompanied by a loud snarl from the character, increasing the jump.

There are scenes with black riders that some could find scary.

The formation of Lurtz is grotesque. Some may find it disturbing.

The facial appearance of the Orcs could be scary. The faces of the orcs are cut up and a little bloody with yellow eyes and gray skin.

A crawling creature may be considered creepy.

Most of the battle sequences are intense. There is one scene with a gigantic, flaming, demon-like creature that can be frightening.

An enormous squid-like creature with numerous tentacles and razor sharp teeth may also prove frightening.
