Gurinder Goes to Goa

27 November 2009 10:20 AM, PST | Bollyspice | See recent Bollyspice news »

Gurinder Chadha arrived in India to visit Goa this week, but she wasn't there just for the scenery. "Yeah, it's lovely here in Goa, and it feels nice. But I am more interested in how Indian audiences view what I do and how I do it." The perfect means for getting that feedback, the International Film Festival of India, is hosting a retrospective of Gurinder's Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, and Bhaji on the Beach.

Gurinder has long been known as a Hindi film fan - her Bride and Prejudice was an affectionate ode to the movies she grew up watching. However, the Punjabi-descended director once again proved Bollywood's universal appeal when she admitted she is not fluent in Hindi.

Fans of all linguistic persuasions will be happy to hear the writer-director has no intention of resting on her laurels. Her next film, It's A Wonderful Afterlife - »

Gurinder Chadha cannot speak Hindi!

24 November 2009 8:20 PM, PST | RealBollywood.com | See recent RealBollywood news »

Panaji, Nov 24 (Ians) She has popularised India in the consciousness of western audiences through films like ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and ‘Bride And Prejudice’ but Gurinder Chadha ironically admits she cannot speak Hindi.

Chadha, who is in Goa to attend a retrospective of her films at the 40th edition of the International Film festival of India (Iffi), said that she could speak Punjabi, but had not mastered Hindi yet.

‘That’s a candid confession,’ the British-Indian director said.

Chadha further said she was working on yet another film set in the Asian-dominated Southall in London.

“The Good Wife” has Kalinda exploring her sexuality

20 November 2009 12:00 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

A few weeks ago, we told you about the possibility that Archie Panjabi’s character, Kalinda, on CBS’s The Good Wife is bisexual. Lesbians and bisexual women everywhere squealed with joy at the possibility of the Bend it Like Beckham hottie canoodling with another badass women like herself after a long day of kicking ass and taking names.

However, this week, Entertainment Weekly’s “Ausellio Files” reported that The Good Wife producers are casting Kalinda’s potential love interest — and it’s a bro.

Wtf happened to Donna? Wasn’t she supposed to be Kalinda’s boo nasty? I’m so sad right now. We want Donna back!

Apparently, said love interest is “Ryan: a hot-headed police investigator.” The nature of their initial meeting? Ryan “ends up owing her a, ahem, favor. She’ll have time to, ahem, collect on said favor since it looks like the role wile be recurring. »

‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ Red Band Trailer

2 November 2009 12:36 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Horror and comedy are two of my favorite genres and just like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, I like when they are combined. Last month, Screen Rant writer Ross Miller did a series on horror films that were combined with other genres. One of those combinations was horror plus comedy and the movie he choose was Shaun of the Dead. Other great examples are the always popular Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness with Bruce “The Chin” Campbell.

Well today, courtesy of our friends at Bloody Disgusting, we have a new trailer for the upcoming horror/comedy film Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. If the film is half as funny as the trailer then I am really looking forward to seeing it. The movie stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dodgeball) and Tyler Labine (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) as two redneck hillbillies that want to do nothing more than enjoy »

Archie Panjabi's character on "The Good Wife" could be bisexual

20 October 2009 3:00 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

AfterEllen.com’s forums have been abuzz with readers whose gaydars have been picking up on the non-straightness of Archie Panjabi’s character, Kalinda Sharma, on CBS’s The Good Wife. Though there aren’t any American news sources confirming Kalinda’s sexuality, South Asian-specific blog Sepia Mutiny and several Indian news sites, as well as some in the UK, reported a month ago that Panjabi’s character is indeed bisexual.

Rediff Movies states that Panjabi, the Indian-origin actress of Bend it like Beckham fame, plays Kalinda, a “bisexual Indian investigator who works alongside the show’s attorney protagonist, [Alicia Florrick], played by Julianna Margulies.”

No word yet on whether Kalinda’s bisexuality will be explored or portrayed in a healthy way, but according to the forums, I’m clearly not alone in speculating that the character Donna is Kalinda’s lezzy lover. And now, in light of these confirmations, Donna very »

"Whip It" delivers the goods

2 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

We bought (and played) into the Whip It hype from the moment Drew Barrymore secured the rights to produce and direct Shauna Cross' young adult novel, Derby Girl. The female-directed, female-scripted, predominantly female-acted film opens in the theaters today, and after catching the sneak peek last weekend I can confidently tell you that with Whip It, Barrymore didn't make any promises she couldn't keep.

Whip It is a smash-and-bash, coming-of-age fairytale that is thoroughly predictable in every way, yet still manages to come off fresh. Maybe it's the infusion of rollicking feminist sentiment, or the girl-heavy soundtrack that swings easily between Tilly and the Wall and Dolly Parton. Or maybe it just feels good to occasionally watch someone get elbowed in the face on purpose.

For those of you who need a refresher: Whip It follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) as she lies about her age and goes against »

Kareena says No to Gurinder Chadha again

Download image as wallpaper All the talk of an international career is just talk for Kareena. As far as she is concerned, she has no intentions of going international. Not even for Gurinder Chadha. Apparently, Aishwarya Rai who did Gurinder's Bride & Prejudice and her husband Paul Berges's The Mistress Of Spices, won't work with her...not after Chadha apparently went around blaming Ash for the failure of her husband's film. Gurinder has also shown keen interest in working with Rani Mukherjee. And of course Kareena who is not impressed. For the second time she has said no to the Bend It Like Beckham director. Says a source, "Three years ago Gurinder wanted Kareena for Bride & Prejudice. Kareena naturally presumed it was the lead. She was shocked to know the director actually wanted her for Aishwarya's youngest sister's part which finally went to Piya Rai Chowdhary. Kareena was shocked. She had »

Killer Imports: My Sassy Girl

29 June 2009 10:28 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Killer Imports [1] is a regular feature on Film Junk where we explore foreign-language films from around the world that haven’t yet had their chance to shine. I think I once loved a girl. The reason I bring this up is that I recently watched a Korean movie called My Sassy Girl and the woman referenced in the title reminded me of her. I wouldn’t normally review a romantic comedy, but I had read about this movie after having seen one of the director’s previous movies, Cyborg She [2], which I favorably reviewed recently. Both these movies are a part of a trilogy by the writer and director, Jae-young Kwak, although the science fiction element in My Sassy Girl is not the basis of the reality in the movie. I’ll get to that soon enough. Since this movie was released in 2001, I’ll admit that I’m late »
