'Road' Poster, Maguire on 'Spider-Man 4,' Shatner in 'Star Trek' and 'Thor' Casting

23 November 2009 4:21 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

First off, a new short arrives on the heels of the short for Up I posted earlier. This time it's the fifth in a series of Cars shorts directed by John Lasseter called "Unidentified Flying Mater."

Moving on, TrekMovie has the as scripted scene from Star Trek had William Shatner as Captain Kirk been included. Read that here.

Next, Natalie Portman tells MTV Kat Dennings has secured a role in Thor but no word on what her role will be. Idris Elba also recently joined the cast as Heimdall, guardian of the Bifrost Bridge.

Tobey Maguire was quoted by HitFix saying Spider-Man 4 will begin filming in February or March of 2010 and said audiences will be seeing a new side to Peter Parker in the third sequel of the comic book flick.

Finally, Rolling Stone gets top-billing on the latest poster for The Road.

Blu-Ray Review: Pixar’s HD Collection Continues With ‘Monsters, Inc.’

19 November 2009 2:49 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – As Disney/Pixar continues to release new films on Blu-Ray, they often “piggy-back” one title with another from their catalog, choosing to release Pete Docter’s first directorial effort for the company, “Monsters, Inc.” in HD on the same day that they release his new film, “Up”. In a beautiful 4-disc combo pack that includes Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital copies of the film, “Monsters, Inc.” continues the Pixar Blu-Ray tradition.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

John Goodman and Billy Crystal star as the lovable-and-gigantic Sulley and his wisecracking sidekick Mike Wazowski, respectively. Sulley and Mike work for a scream-processing factory in Monstropolis known as “Monsters, Inc.” A little girl named Boo finds her way into the world, scaring the monsters in return, and it’s up to Sulley and Mike to restore order and get the wee one back home where she belongs.

Monsters, Inc. was released on Blu-Ray and DVD on November 10th, »

6 Movie Clips and a Featurette from Walt Disney’s The Princess And The Frog

18 November 2009 11:45 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

“‘The Princess and the Frog’ is a return to the timeless world of hand-drawn animation at Disney. It’s an ageless fairy tale, but with a fresh twist that combines everything we look for in great stories: comedy, adventure, music-and most of all, the kind of heart that always sets Disney animation apart.”

~ John Lasseter, Executive Producer and Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney Animation Studios

Opening on November 25th, in limited release, is Walt Disney’s return to 2D animation, The Princess and the Frog.  After years of focusing on computer animation, The House That Walt Built is returning to its roots and I couldn’t be more excited.  While I don’t know if The Princess and the Frog is going to be a classic like Aladdin or Beauty and the Beast, I know there is a place for traditional animation alongside what Pixar does so brilliantly with computers. »

Wtf: Check Out the Chinese ‘Remake’ of Pixar’s Short Presto

18 November 2009 11:15 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I'm not sure where I first saw this crazy piece of animation, but it was likely when Pixar's Lee Unkrich mentioned it on Twitter. "The most strangely surreal thing I've seen in a while. Like being transported to an alternate reality," he said. There has been a lot of Pixarn't over the past few years, including 'remakes' of Ratatouille and Cars from Brazilian outfit Vídeo Brinquedo, both of which are linked below. But this Chinese version of the short Presto is possibly the most exact replication of Pixar's work yet. That being the case, it's still light-years from the real thing. It's like there's a version of the uncanny valley that relates specifically to cheap versions of good animation. The closer something gets to replicating the real thing without actually doing so, the weirder it looks. One of the comments on the original YouTube upload of this short makes an »

[DVD Review] Monsters, Inc.

17 November 2009 3:02 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Monsters, Inc. has everything a Pixar movie should: an interesting take on a common story, fantastic animation, top-shelf acting and a sense of child-like wonder. Oh, and John Ratzenberger. Flipping the monster in the closet paradigm on its head, Monsters, Inc. takes the traditional idea and asks a question few consider “Why do they scare?” Many horror films waste countless frames of celluloid attempting to give a brief background or origin story to their ghoulies, but Monsters, Inc. upped the ante. Instead of a mere glimpse, they completely dive into the world of monsters and tell us a story about avarice and business ethics while still providing a film most kids will go ga-ga for.

James P. “Sulley” Sullivan (John Goodman) holds the record in Monstropolis for the most energy generated by scaring children. Contrary to the really simple conceptualization of monster-lives-in-closet, the monsters of Monstropolis have a genuinely genius method for reaching their targets. »

Blu-ray Review: Ultimate 'Cars' Gift Pack

10 November 2009 12:50 PM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Rounding out a day of high profile Disney/Pixar Blu-ray releases (both Up and Monster's Inc. also released on Blu-ray today) is the Cars Ultimate Gift Pack. Even if you haven't seen Cars, chances are high that you've seen some of the merchandise inspired by it as just about every little boy seemingly has one pair of Lightning McQueen pajamas. Set in a world where vehicles (primarily cars) represent humans, Cars tells the story of an arrogant race car, Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), that has his eyes only on fame and fortune, nothing else. Before an important championship race, McQueen finds himself lost in a desolate town called Radiator Springs, just off the famous Route 66. From Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) to Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) to Sally (Bonnie Hunt), McQueen encounters many rich characters that he grows to love and the experience completely humbles him »

Blu-ray Capsule Review: Cars (Blu-ray Combo Pack Gift Set)

10 November 2009 1:29 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Cars (Blu-ray Combo Pack Gift Set) Quick Thoughts: Often looked at as the lesser of the Pixar films (hardly an insult) and at almost two hours I can understand some of those complaints, but this isn't a terrible film by any means. I will, however, say that after defending it when I ranked the first ten Pixar films, I would probably knock it down a couple of notches and certainly place it behind Monsters, Inc. at this point. Don't get me wrong, I still like this film and would watch it in a heartbeat, but the more I watch it, the less I get out of it. It's still the best thing Larry the Cable Guy has done and ever will do and visually it's stunning, but it is rather by-the-book and doesn't have the heart most Pixar films have as much as it just follows procedure.

Up Blu-ray Review

9 November 2009 7:50 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When talking about the latest Pixar, it’s easy to fall into superlatives. Really, there’s only one modestly bad apple, and that’s Cars. The other film singled out as less than is A Bug’s Life, but that’s a solid film in its own right, and probably their most underrated. So is it fair to call Up a masterpiece? Yes. Yes it is. My review of Up after the jump.

Carl Frederickson (voiced by Ed Asner) has led a great life. He and his wife Ellie were together for a very long time, but there were two minor problems in their marriage. One, she couldn’t get pregnant, and two their plans to go adventuring were always cut a little short by life.  After she passes away, Carl is one of the few holdouts in his neighborhood that hasn’t sold his house, and so contractors are »

What I Watched, What You Watched: Installment #16

9 November 2009 1:18 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I know I'm a day late with this, but it's for good reason. The problem this week wasn't that I didn't watch any movies, it was simply that I watched too many that I couldn't cover with this Sunday column for one reason or another. As a result, I waited one day so I could watch one of my Netflix selections that arrived on Friday so I would have at least something to add to the conversation before I let you guys run wild in the comments.

However, just in an effort for full disclosure, I watched Up once again on Blu-ray as well as the Blu-ray copies of Monsters, Inc. and Cars all in preparation for my reviews, which I just finished and will publish on Tuesday. I also watched the Bruno Blu-ray and on top of all that I saw A Christmas Carol (review), Pirate Radio, The Fourth Kind »

Up Blu-Ray Review

8 November 2009 11:40 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Critics and audiences alike often get flack for championing Pixar’s films every time a new one is released. While everyone does go crazy with praise, just take a look at their catalog. Cars and A Bug’s Life may not be up to the standards of Toy Story 2, Wall-e, or Finding Nemo but they’re still better than half of the animated movies that are released over the years. If anything they’re probably the best studio around as they consistently churn out projects that above all put their story and characters first. One year ago, everyone crowned Wall-e as their finest achievement and was on many “best of” lists, mine included. While Up is certainly going to be there this year, my question now is will it remain on top? While it’s dropped a place or two, there’s no denying that Pixar has crafted their finest film. »
