'Call of Duty' Movie Talk Highlights Kevin McKidd's Sense of Humor

18 November 2009 1:45 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I'm already a big Kevin McKidd fan from his work on television shows like Rome and the woefully under-seen Journeyman, as well as his turns in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven and Neil Marshall's Dog Soldiers, but his comments on the increasing possibility of a Call of Duty film have made me love the actor even more. For those who weren't in line at midnight for the recent launch of the latest CoD entry, Modern Warfare 2, you should know that Call of Duty is a first-person-shooter video game series that started off during World War II but has since spread its settings throughout the last hundred or so years of combat.

A few months ago Activision, the game's publisher, filed for a Call of Duty movie-related trademark, hinting that they were planning on kick-starting a film franchise as well. After the $550 millon success of Modern Warfare 2, the New »

Blu-ray Review: Gone With the Wind (70th Anniversary)

17 November 2009 2:04 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Photo: Warner Home Video An immaculate and beautiful presentation wrapped in a red velvet box, Warner Home Video's 70th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Gone With the Wind is a must for any avid film fan or Gone With the Wind fanatic, and I can only assume all of us know one or more of the latter and are obviously all members of the former. Not only is the packaged presentation some of the best I have seen from the studio, the film itself has never looked better and I can't imagine it ever will, at least not on home video.

When it comes to Blu-ray high-definition we are really getting down to the true essence of today's films and when we're talking about restoring a 70-year-old film onto the new media, one of my primary concerns was the expectation of too much grain, primarily in the lavish colors. Fortunately »

Poster of Eva Green in Cracks

28 October 2009 2:25 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

In Kingdom of Heaven, Ridley Scott cast Eva Green as Princess Sibylla, and now his daughter, Jordan Scott, has cast Eva Green in her feature film debut, Cracks, which is an independent film about a teacher in a 1934 all-girls boarding school named Miss G who inspired a devotional clique. I don’t know how good this film is going to be, but if anything, it definitely proves that Jordan Scott inherited her father’s propensity for beautiful visual flourishes (for a better idea, you can watch the trailer here). Jordan Scott is, appropriately, a photographer, so she must have an eye for imagery. The film is also likely to inspire the dreams of many men in which Eva Green is their teacher. Empire has a poster of the film, which you can see below. Cracks will be released on December 4th, 2009. »

DVD producer gets his Crave on

27 October 2009 12:49 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

DVD producer Charles de Lauzirika has started filming his first feature film where he gets to call the shots. The Alien Quadrilogy, Spider-Man 2, Blade Runner, 4-disc Kingdom of Heaven set and special edition Gladiator mastermind wowed cinephiles with the depth of special features and content on these five DVD sets and many others; now we get to see what his idea of a film is like when the thriller Crave gets released in the next year or two.

Written by de Lauzirika and Robert Lawson, the film is about a photographer (Josh Lawson) who has strange visions. The second sight causes him to lose his girl (Emma Lung, The Boys Are Back) and also be followed by a detective (Ron Perlman, Hellboy). Filming just got underway in Detroit last Friday.

Crave is an indie and doesn't have any studio behind it yet. »

Josh Lawson, Ron Perlman, and Emma Lung to Star in Charles de Lauzirika’s Feature Debut Crave

26 October 2009 10:09 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Ron Perlman (”Hellboy”), Josh Lawson (”$quid: The Movie”), and Emma Lung (”The Boys Are Back”) have all signed on to Charles de Lauzirkia’s indie thriller, “Crave”.  According to THR, the story “centers on a troubled photographer (Lawson) whose dangerous visions wreak havoc when his romance with a young woman (Lung) ends and he is pursued by a world-weary detective (Perlman).”  I love the “troubled photographer” character because I always like to imagine him down at Sears about to take a family’s Christmas photo and suddenly he screams, “The demons are coming to rape us all!”  And isn’t that really what Christmas is all about?

This is de Lauzirkia’s feature debut which he also co-wrote the script with Robert Lawton (”Sex & Sushi”).  If you don’t know who de Lauzirika is, take a look at the DVDs and Blu-rays on your shelf.  You see the ones with the greatest extra content? »

Exclusive: Wynter Dark script brings high adventure back to the wasteland!

19 October 2009 1:12 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

When a post-apocalyptic knight fights a battle-worn polar bear for a dinner of dead rabbit within the first two pages of a screenplay, I'm basically sold. Literally any old rubbish could have followed in the next hundred or so pages of Wynter Dark and I'd still have had that one glorious visual stuck in my head and been completely desperate to see the film come to fruition.

Luckily, the script for Wynter Dark comes stuffed with all kinds of violent apocalyptic high-adventure and is easily one of the most ambitious, action packed scripts I've read in a long time. To put the sheer grandness of it all in perspective, I'd like you to think about what it might look like to take the entire last act of Kingdom of Heaven and play it out on the snowy wastelands of Hoth. Yep, swords and catapults in the snow baby. Keep that »

Universal Releases Official Synopses For 2010 Slate, Gives Good Look at MacGruber and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood

13 October 2009 8:39 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

What follows basically amounts to me copy/pasting an entire press release from Universal, for which I apologize. But this is one of the few times where the action is worthwhile, because the studio has sent out a set of approved synopses for the 2010 slate, and there are details here about films like MacGruber, David Gordon Green's Your Highness and Ridley Scott's still-Untitled Robin Hood Adventure that we hadn't seen assembled all in one place. Three of these movies are like class reunions. The reasons for being interested in Robin Hood and Your Highness are probably pretty obvious. Robin Hood has Ridley Scott reuniting with Russell Crowe and returning to the middle ages and potentially offering a historically accurate (or more historically accurate) take on the story than we're used to. I like the idea that Scott is making a movie that dovetails slightly with Kingdom of Heaven »

The Top 10 Most Influential Scores of the Past Decade: #1

7 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | SCOREcastOnline.com | See recent SCOREcastOnline.com news »

#1 - Gladiator

(Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard)

There has been much heated discussion this week about whether Hans Zimmer can really be called an "influential" composer, but the proof seems to be in the pudding: Zimmer's output from 1999 until now is impressive, and includes first class film scores for thirteen of the highest grossing films of the past decade. It only seems fitting that he would take our #1 spot, and that SCOREcast readers would vote his score, co-written with Lisa Gerrard, to Ridley Scott's epic masterpiece Gladiator as the number one most influential score of the past decade.

But before we get into the analysis of why Gladiator took the top spot on our countdown, let's recap how we got to this point, starting with the beginning of the Top 10 list (click on any title to read SCOREcast analysis from each score, and comments from the SCOREcast readership): »

[DVD Review] The Crusades: Crescent & the Cross

24 September 2009 9:05 AM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Ever wished your favorite movies were documentaries instead of narratives? That Morgan Freeman didn’t just offer a few prose passages between Red’s time in Shawshank but pretty much read Stephen King’s story on an audio track? Or maybe Christopher Walken voicing over the Deerhunter? Really the choices are endless and, to sweeten the pot, imagine the things you’d learn about the characters. Guess what? Apparently the History Channel is doing that now. At least they did it for Kingdom of Heaven, the movie about the crusades starring Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson.

Okay, they didn’t really do that but you’d never know the difference.

The Crusades: Crescent & the Cross plots out the major events and the hidden history of the greatest mistakes ever pursued in the name of religion. The strip of land on which Jerusalem stands has been the most contested area in the history of the world. »

Michael Sheen Calls His 'New Moon' Character 'Gentle On The Surface'

'But beneath, he is a psychopathic killer,' says the actor, who plays Volturi leader Aro.

In the "Twilight" universe, there's no shortage of father figures. For tough, fair and loving, you have Bella's dad, Charlie Swan. For a slightly better-looking, cooler paternal icon, there's Dr. Carlisle Cullen. Now, Twilighters have a new one in 40-year-old veteran actor Michael Sheen.

We know that Sheen's Aro isn't technically the "father" of the Volturi clan, but in many ways, the star took his role as elder statesman on both sides of the camera very seriously. Recently, we caught up with the star of "Kingdom of Heaven," "The Queen" and "Blood Diamond" to get his thoughts on the "Twilight" family, a "scary as hell" Dakota Fanning and all that RPattz insanity.

Kingdom of Heaven: Director’s Cut (2005) Movie Review

19 September 2009 9:13 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Ridley Scott’s “Kingdom of Heaven”, although employing the Crusades as the backdrop of religious history, is just about as religiously ascetic as a movie of this kind can be, and as such it tends to loom over the subject material. It is more about how the characters are affected by the events around them in human terms. Fanaticism is motivated by fear or greed, and doubt and humility and respect are the purest forms of religious expression. And so the Kingdom of Heaven may not be so much a place as a journey, both personal and intimate. This journey is undertaken by Balian (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith who abandons life in France and travels to Jerusalem after his wife’s suicide, which was brought about by their son’s death. A title card at the outset informs us that Christians and Muslims co-habitat Jerusalem in an unstable peace. It »

Awol: Orlando Bloom's Career

18 September 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | newser.com | See recent newser news »

He “has a record six movies that have grossed $300 million+ in the Us,” has worked with hugely successful directors, and was once “a big-league heartthrob whose poster adorned the walls of many a teenage girl,” writes Scott Mendelson for the Huffington Post. So why is Orlando Bloom “nowhere to be seen in today’s filmmaking landscape?” Blame it on his daring to “put the movie first and stardom second.” The big problems: “Taking major roles in films that looked great on paper but ultimately floundered through no fault of his”—see Elizabethtown and Kingdom of Heaven —and “being critically torn... »

What constitute good acting? What makes a good actor? Are there certain steps one must follow in order to become an actor or is it a gift or a natural talent and requires no formal training? These are the questions we'll try to answer - and before we begin, let me just say, I have been patiently waiting for an 'opportunity' like this, and I would like to thank one tMF viewer for the vigorous and insightful comments on 'good acting' and the case between Ben Barnes, Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp.
