Trailer: The King of Fighters

26 November 2009 10:23 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Old school video game fans are not going to be happy with this! A trailer for the live-action adaptation of the classic Snk 2D fighting game The King of Fighters has surfaced online and it looks as though it’s a serious contender for the worst video game-to-film adaptation ever made.

Starring Sean Faris (Never Back Down), Maggie Q (Live Free or Die Hard), Will Yun Lee (Elektra), and martial arts expert Ray Park (Darth Maul from Star Wars: The Phantom Menace), The King of Fighters is directed by Gordon Chan, who although was behind the terrible Jackie Chan film The Medallion, also made the much loved Jet Li classic Fist of Legend.

The film’s premise is wildly different from the game it’s based upon. According to Movieset:

The King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe »

Right now on Cinematical

22 November 2009 6:37 AM, PST | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:

Live Free or Die Hard on Blu-Ray for $7.99? I'm there. Check out that and other Best Buy Black Friday movie deals. I know Funny People didn't exactly kill at the box office, but I loved it. It's coming out on Blu-Ray soon, and Cinematical scored an interview with writer/director Judd Apatow to talk about it. Forbes came out with a list of the 10 most overpaid actors in Hollywood, and number 1 may surprise you. Cinematical wants this clip of Kevin Smith talking about the Twilight saga to be the last word on the matter. I agree. What do you think about Bones becoming a giant Avatar promo? »

Opinion In A Haystack: Eric Lichtenfeld Part 2

18 November 2009 1:59 AM, PST | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

Interview: Eric Lichtenfeld Part 2 of 2

This is the second half of my talk with Eric Lichtenfeld, author of Action Speaks Louder: Violence, Spectacle, and the American Action Movie. Please don’t forget to check out the first half of this interview or my original review of his book.

Bob Rose: Do you enjoy action film satires such as True Lies, Shoot ’Em Up, or Hot Fuzz?

Eric Lichtenfeld: I like True Lies a lot.

Br: It’s definitely a satire, at least to some degree.

El: Yes, a loving one. It’s one of those films that works both ways. I think Robocop is an even better example than True Lies, but both of them illustrate this well: it’s a satire that works as a movie even if you don’t get the satire. You don’t watch them and think that there is something you’re missing. »

Len Wiseman in Talks to Direct Untitled Post-Apocalyptic Thriller

11 November 2009 10:44 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

We've been hearing Len Wiseman's name thrown around a lot over the past year or two, but despite being courted for some high profile projects, he still doesn't have a gig lined up to follow 2007's Live Free or Die Hard. It's possible that he's just being choosy (which makes sense considering that Die Hard was reportedly a pretty grueling shoot), but it also seems like he's had a bit of bad luck with a few projects falling through or being put on hold. At one point he was supposed to direct the Escape From New York remake, but that seems to be dead, and he is also still attached to the Gears of War movie and the comic book adaptations Atlantis Rising and Shrapnel. However, at this point his next project is shaping up to be something entirely different. According to The Hollywood Reporter [1], Wiseman has signed on »

Underworld Director to Go Post-Apocalyptic

10 November 2009 3:04 PM, PST | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Len Wiseman is known to genre fans for his direction of two of the Underworld movies, and to action fans for his contribution to the Die Hard series, Live Free Or Die Hard.  According to THR, he's now in talks to direct an end of the world movie based on an untitled pitch that Fox Studios bought from Jeremy Passmore and Andre Fabrizio, the pair behind the script for the Red Dawn remake. According to the THR article, "The project is based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position."  This doesn't sound so original to me (The Stand comes to mind), but they sold it, and God bless them for it.

Len Wiseman Taking on Apocalyptic Mystery Film 'Nocturne'

10 November 2009 10:50 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

What if you survived the end of the world, but you had no idea how it all happened? 20th Century Fox will be taking this interesting concept to the big screen as THR reports that director Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard) will be at the helm of Nocturne, a story about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position. Funnily enough, Fox doesn't even know how they got to that position because the studio is still in the process of hiring writers. Despite the lack of direction, this high concept seems like an apocalyptic Memento, and that sounds like all sorts of good fun. Though the concept sounds intriguing, Wiseman hasn't exactly impressed me with any of his work. Live Free or Die Hard was a generic action movie disguised as a Die Hard movie, »

Len Wiseman Gets Apocalyptic with ‘Nocturne’

10 November 2009 9:35 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Roland Emmerich isn't the only director thinking about the end of the world this year. According to THR, Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard directer Len Wiseman (aka Mr. Kate Beckensale) is also looking to put an end to humanity. His pitch, titled Nocturne, has been picked up by 20th Century Fox. It is based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got through it. There is no script yet, but the studio is currently shopping the idea around to writers. This makes for three projects in development for Wiseman, who is quickly becoming the next major director with everything to do, and no time to actually do it. After directing Live Free or Die Hard and producing this year's Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, he has had nothing actually get the go-ahead for production. He's »

Len Wiseman Directing New Post-Apocalyptic Thriller, But What About 'Gears Of War'?

10 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The prospect of Armageddon is one of the scarier notions facing humanity today — but apparently it's not as scary for movie studios based on an upcoming film from director Len Wiseman.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the "Live Free or Die Hard" helmer is attached to produce and direct an untitled pitch — though the article's headline identifies the film's title as "Nocturne" — for 20th Century Fox. The film's plot centers on a handful of survivors following a wide-scale apocalyptic event and how each of them arrived at their current dilemma. Writers have yet to be hired.

With "2012" coming out this week and a prospective television follow-up to the film announced, it really does seem that post-apocalyptic narratives are all the rage in Hollywood these days. But I'm not here to lampoon Wiseman for his decision to join the bandwagon — instead, I want to know how this is going to effect "Gears of War. »

Len Wiseman Is The Next Guy To End The World

10 November 2009 7:10 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Roland Emmerich seems to be trying to end apocalypse movies once and for all with 2012, in which he thoroughly destroys the world so badly that even the Himalayas get flooded. But 2009 has obviously been a banner year for depictions of our own demise, and that train isn't going to stop just because Emmerich says so. THR is reporting that Live Free or DIe Hard director Len Wiseman will next tackle mass destruction, directing an untitled pitch about survivors of the apocalypse who try to figure out just how they got there. It doesn't sound all that unlike the 2012 TV sequel Emmerich has been talking up, but then again, when it comes to apocalypse stories, either everyone dies or some people survive and figure out what happens next. We have no more details on what Wiseman plans for this particular version of our demise, but if he he brings in the »

Len Wiseman Goes Post-Apocalyptic

10 November 2009 5:28 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Len Wiseman, the man behind Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard,  has signed on to direct and produce an untitled pitch that Fox has just grabbed the rights to.

Details (and screenwriters!) are scarce, but according to THR, “the project is based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position. The studio is seeking writers for the project.”

Wiseman is currently in limbo at the moment, with his name attached to Schrapnel and Atlantis Rising, but no project in production. Seeing as how this post-apocalyptic project hasn’t even had the details fleshed out, I’d say we’re more likely to see one of those two projects coming to fruition first, or Wiseman stepping in for another director elsewhere.

I have conflicted thoughts about Wiseman. He seems to straddle a »

Director Len Wiseman to End the World with Nocturne

10 November 2009 12:30 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Len Wiseman, the man who abused his blue-filter privileges for Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, will follow up 2007’s Live Free or Die Hard with an end-of-the-world flick entitled Nocturne.  According to THR, 20th Century Fox has picked up the project based on an original idea about a group of people who survive the end of the world and the mystery surrounding how they got to that position.  The project is currently looking for writers for what I have to say is not a bad premise.

As for Wiseman, his other potential projects, including the underwater military action flick Atlantis Rising and the futuristic war movie Shrapnel (why all the killing, Wiseman?), but doesn’t have a go picture.  Wiseman has been a non-starter for some potentially major films like a remake of Escape from New York and an adaptation of the popular video game Gears of War.

Len Wiseman To Direct Nocturne, Thriller Set After The End of The World

Len Wiseman has signed on to direct Nocturne for 20th Century Fox. We don't know much about this project other than the few little tidbits included in The Hollywood Reporter's announcement piece, so lets look at what we know: Post Apocalyptic: The story is set after the end of the world, and follows a group of survivors. The Twist: The film is about "the mystery surrounding how they got to that position" And before you think this is just another post apocalyptic disaster film, ala 2012, the piece mentions that the film is a "thriller." Original: The pitch is based on a completely original idea (ie not a remake, adaptation or sequel), and no writers have been hired to pen the project, but the studio is currently on the hunt. Who's Involved: Len Wiseman wrote and directed Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, and last directed Live Free or Die Hard. Wiseman is »

Len Wiseman May Helm End of World Tale, 'Nocturne'

20th Century Fox has purchased a pitch (presently titled "Nocturne") about the end of the world, with Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman in talks to direct and produce.

Wiseman is attached to the underwater military actioner Atlantis Rising and the futuristic war pic Shrapnel, but does not currently have a green light on any project right now.

The trade correctly points out that Hollywood is embracing its cyclical love-affair with disaster/apocalypse themes, with Sony releasing Roland Emmerich's end-of-days pic 2012 this Friday, a possible spin-off survival series based upon the movie in the works, and several other disaster flicks in various stages of development, »

Len Wiseman Gets in on the Nocturne Apocalypse

9 November 2009 9:02 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Not to be outdone by Roland Emmerich and his disaster porn fetish, “Underworld” director Len Wiseman is going to try his hand at blowing up the world and leaving behind just a few stragglers to figure out why. Wiseman, who directed the first two “Underworld” movies along with “Live Free or Die Hard”, has sold an untitled pitch to Fox about the end of the world. Well okay, the pitch is said to be untitled, but in their article, THR actually calls the movie “Noturne” in the headline, which, er, doesn’t really mean it’s untitled. Or did THR screw up? I guess we’ll find out tomorrow. Then again, the article also says Wiseman directed “Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans”, when he only produced, so … Anyhoo, about the movie, which may or may not be called “Noturne”. It will be about a group of people who survive the end of the world, »
