The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention issued a press release this week criticizing The Office for its "graphic depiction of the suicide method" on last week's Halloween episode. According to the organization, "'there comes a point when jokes can go to far and are potentially dangerous and offensive,'" and they're "calling on all within the entertainment industry to refrain from using suicide and mental illness for comedic entertainment." (NBC did not respond to a request for comment.) Nothing in the release mentions the fact that Michael is trying -- badly, yes -- to promote a suicide prevention message. This is the scene in question: »

Sir Ian McKellen has signed on to play his fictional brother in a new TV drama.
The Oscar nominee will star as Murray McKellen in The Academy, about a run-down drama school in London.
The show will be shot in the fake documentary style that helped Ricky Gervais' The Office find huge success.
Producers hope the show will air in both the U.K. and U.S., reports Daily Variety. »

J.J. Abrams, the creator of Alias, Felicity, Lost and Fringe, will slide back into the director's chair for Undercovers, a new NBC pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
NBC wins bidding war for J.J. Abrams' new series
Abrams, who is also executive-producing the married spies project, hasn't directed a TV pilot since the blockbuster, two-hour opening salvo of Lost in 2004. About a year later, he segued into directing such films as Mission: Impossible III and the Star Trek reboot.
Abrams' other TV directing credits include a 2007 episode of The Office and an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2006...

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention has blasted The Office for a recent episode. The offending scene saw Steve Carell's character Michael Scott trying to scare young children by struggling in a noose. The Afsp have said that such scenes may encourage mentally ill people to take their own lives, and has urged broadcasters to stop using suicide in a comedic sense. The foundation's executive director (more) »

(S06E09) There was so much comedic potential in this week's episode, that I ended up coming away from this one unsatisfied. It played out as essentially two mini-episodes, and while the second one was better than the first, neither was particularly funny.
Michael Scott is always funnier when he produces cringe-worthy moments via his cluelessness. Cruelty just doesn't suit him well, and the only time it really works for him is when he's dressing down Dwight. What I was expecting to see during his and Helaine's double date with Pam and Jim was some blissful obliviousness on Michael's part and seething anger on Pam's part. What we got was a Michael that was about as cruel as he's been to anyone in quite some time.

On top of executive producing his "Undercovers" Warner Bros. pilot at NBC, J.J. Abrams is in talks to direct the opening episode. Schedule permitting, Abrams will make "Undercovers" the first TV pilot he has directed since 2004's "Lost" rwo-part opener which is considered one of the best-directed pilots of all time. This aided in skyrocketing Abrams' career to directing roles like "Mission: Impossible 3" and the recent blockbuster "Star Trek." Abrams served as producer for various TV shows including "Fringe" and also directed an episode of "The Office" in 2007. »

One could say that Michael Scott hangs himself regularly on The Office. But his latest stunt has more people squirming than usual. The American Federation for Suicide Prevention was put off by last week's Halloween episode of the Emmy-winning sitcom, in which Steve Carell's character slips a noose around his neck and fakes a hanging to scare a group of young visitors to Dunder-Mifflin's haunted house. "Kids, just remember, suicide is not the answer. It is the easy way out," Michael reminds them afterward. Same old delusional Michael, maybe, but a really inappropriate line according to the people whose mission it is to educate about mental illness and prevent others from taking their own... »

Here's some exciting local news for our readers in our home city of Austin, TX. One of my more praised, but lesser known Sundance 2009 favorites is coming to town -- and with it comes writer/director John Krasinski, who you may know as Jim from The Office. The film is Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, based on the David Foster Wallace novel of the same name. When I reviewed it at Sundance in January of this year, I said that the source material — a favorite book of mine — is on par with Watchmen in its level of difficulty for adaptation. It has long been thought to be a near-impossible work to adapt. And what Krasinski has done with this star-studded affair is nothing short of immaculate, especially for a first time director. It is a fresh new voice telling an ambitious story that delivers dramatic moments that are poignant and deeply affecting, and »

"The Office" star Rainn Wilson is lending to his voice talents to a new documentary, "The New Recruits," from the creators of the award-winning doc "The Linguists." But the new company Wilson will be narrating for is nothing like Dunder Mifflin.
"The New Recruits" follows a group of business students who think of a new way to end global poverty: charge poor people for basic services. The students hit Kenya, Pakistan, and India to charge people for toilet service and drip irrigation in a movement touted "the alternative to charity."
"We are elated to have Rainn lend his comic sensibility and universally recognizable voice to 'The New Recruits'," said Jeremy Newberger, who along with Seth Kramer and Daniel A. Miller, is one of the three directors of the film. "Viewers will relish engaging 'The New Recruits' with Rainn as storyteller."

Weezer's new album Raditude is in stores now, and the single "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" is making big waves (it currently climbing up Billboard's rock songs chart). The album is Weezer's strongest in years, as it does an impressive job balancing the huge riffs, sweet melodies and frontman Rivers Cuomo's cheeky lyrics. Highlights include the driving "I'm Your Daddy" (which is the album's second single), the sweet "I Don't Want to Let You Go" and the jittery, pulsating "Tripping Down the Freeway."
One of the most interesting aspects of the album is the title itself. "The Office" star and Weezer pal Rainn Wilson came up with the name, but according to Cuomo, didn't provide any explanation or context for it. "He didn't say what it meant, so I've had to come up with my own definition," Cuomo told MTV News. "In my mind, »

The Office's Jenna Fischer is usually a pretty sensible person, but all that goes out the door when it comes to her upcoming wedding to screenwriter Lee Kirk. "I thought I was going to be one of those easy-going brides," Fischer, 35, tells Bonnie Hunt in an interview to air Thursday. "I never really thought about it. Whatever … a piece of paper, words - send it out." But that attitude disappeared at the store where she bought the invitations. The Office crew proves they still have their web series juice with their latest online offshoot Subtle Sexuality, which first popped up two weeks ago before premiering October 29. Now the entire three-episode web series is now online including the finale (above), a tribute video "Male Prima Donna" about Kelly Kapoor's on-again/off-againg boyfriend Ryan. And with musicals so hot right now, it's not exactly a shocker that they went that route. Also up now is a fully loaded site around the all-girl pop group formed by Kelley (Mindy Kaling) and Erin (Ellie Kemper). The band satisfies at least two of nutcase Kelly's obsessions—pop celebrities and Ryan (B.J. Novak). And Andy (Ed Helms) gets to rock some more of his Cornell acapella skills. And just like any good web series music video—The Guild's megapop "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar" and Sparhüsen's "Apples & Fish"—you can actually buy the video and track on iTunes. »

It's awkward city tonight on The Office when the newlyweds Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) ran out of excuses so they have no choice but to go out with Michael (Steve Carell) and Pam's mom Helene (Linda Purl). Yes, a double date for Jim and Pam and Michael and Pam's mother. It's kind of hard to forget how Pam practically exploded when she found out that the woman Michael was dating was her mom (they met in their own wedding), a reaction that included storming out of the room, screaming at the parking lot, and constantly throwing barbs at him during meetings.
So it's slightly hard to believe that Pam might be up for this so soon. The two, Michael and Pam, had a little break from each other last episode, when she and Andy (Ed Helms) went to a sales call outside the office while Michael and »

Emily Blunt joined Matt Damon Monday for a long afternoon on the NYC set of The Adjustment Bureau. After working on a few scenes, they took a quick lunch break before heading home afterward in the dark. Emily had another late night yesterday, when she joined fiance John Krasinski for a premiere of The Red Shoes. We've been pondering what it would be like if John's The Office met Mad Men, but he was all about posing and smiling with Emily as they checked out the movie alongside newly announced Oscar host Alec Baldwin. Casting is closing up for Cedar Rapids, a comedy now being directed by Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt). Joining the previously cast Ed Helms (The Hangover) and Anne Heche (Hung) are Sigourney Weaver (Avatar), John C. Reilly (Cirque du Freak) and Alia Shawkat (Whip It).
Helms, who also starred on NBC's The Office (and which for director Arteta shot an episode or two for), co-developed the premise of the movie with screenwriter Phil Johnston. The actor plays a depressive insurance agent who heads off to a convention in hopes of stopping layoffs at his company. Weaver plays Helms' seventh grade teacher; the lady that played Ripley is finally getting teacher roles. Apple on the desk for her and all that.
Sideways director Alexander Payne is producing which explains the connection to Anne Heche; she's a supporting cast member in HBO's Hung series, of which Payne is a producer on. He also shot the pilot episode. »

Want to know why Sigourney Weaver has the comedic ability to do a great job in movies like Ghostbusters or Galaxy Quest? Or why John C. Reilly cracked you up so darn well in Step Brothers?
Take a look at Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm or the highly underappreciated Criminal. These guys have the acting chops to pull off drama effortlessly, and like the best comedic actors, have an understanding of every bit of the craft.
This is why I’m so excited for Miguel Arteta’s (Youth in Revolt) new film Cedar Rapids, which has added Weaver and Reilly to the cast alongside Alia Shawkat, The Office’s Ed Helms, and Anne Heche.
Rapids, developed by Helms and Phil Johnston (Flightless Birds), the film will “center on a wholesome and naive small-town Wisconsin man (Helms) who, when his role model dies, must represent his company at a regional insurance conference in Cedar Rapids, »
