Leads Cast in Jamie Babbit's Breaking The Girl

30 October 2009 5:39 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Myriad Pictures has announced that Amanda Crew and Adrianne Palicki (pictured) are set to co-star in Jamie Babbit’s upcoming thriller Breaking The Girl. Production is scheduled to start in Canada in 2010.

Mark Distefano and Guinevere Turner wrote the screenplay about a naive college student who falls in with a manipulative classmate who implicates her in a murder. Myriad Pictures president and CEO Kirk D’Amico said, "Amanda and Adrianne are perfectly cast as the two students who become almost more than friends before the truth about Alex is revealed. It’s sexy and scary, and we expect it to fall into the same genre category as films like Prom Night and Wild Things."

Crew most recently appeared in A Haunting in Connecticut and Final Destination 3 while Palicki has been a recurring player in The CW's "Supernatural" and will next be seen opposite Paul Bettany in Legion. Babbit's past »

Halloween 3-D is Put On Hold While Halloween 2 Comes Back to Theaters

30 September 2009 11:13 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A couple of weeks back we gave you an update on all the sequels, reboots, and remakes that are happening right now over at Bob Weinstein’s Dimension Films. In that update, Bob said that the company wanted to shoot “Halloween 3″ in 3-D with hopes of releasing the film next October.  I’m sure that we will still see a 3rd film, but it seems that the project has now been put on hold.  You can get the details and reason behind this move when you hit the jump.

Nikkie Finke tells us that Bob Weinstein shut down the  “Halloween 3-D”‘ pre-production because “Bob just felt it was rushing too fast.”  The film already had Patrick Lussier (”My Bloody Valentine 3-D”) attached to direct, but it seems that his previously announced other 3-D film, “Drive Angry”, got in the way of “Halloween 3-D”.

Swampy Updates on Boggy Creek and Muckman

23 September 2009 3:46 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

We've been following the progress of two new swamp monster movies in the works, and today we can bring you new news on both. More plot details have emerged on the Boggy Creek non-remake. The first image giving us a good look at swamp thing on the prowl in Brett Piper's Muckman is now available for gawking at. Put on your galoshes; things are about to get swampy.

It seems almost strange that more and more information about this Boggy Creek flick is coming via local newspapers in the areas where the film is shooting rather than Internet horror websites. That truly is the mark of an old school indie film production. Another surefire sign is when you're actually filming in a town named Uncertain.

Last month I reported on news courtesy of a Texarkana newspaper, and this month our Boggy Creek news comes via the Marshall News Messenger. »

Tyler Perry 'Can Do' Good at the Box Office

13 September 2009 5:30 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Tyler Perry's Madea swung her weight at the box office again, handily topping a modest weekend at the box office with her latest appearance in Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The weekend also saw a passable start for the animated 9 and the failures of two thrillers, Sorority Row and Whiteout. Overall business was off seven percent from the same weekend last year, when Burn After Reading and Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys opened. I Can Do Bad All By Myself yanked an estimated $24 million out of approximately 3,200 screens at 2,255 sites. It was the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie, though slightly above average in terms of attendance, and a new high for one of his Fall releases, topping The Family That Preys ($17.4 million) and Why Did I Get Married? ($21.4 million). Though not named in the title like Perry's biggest hits, Madea was »

Harpers Island (DVD Review)

7 September 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Grabbing my late-night viewing snack, the “thwrick” of the TV snaps on and I “thump” back onto the couch.  The hesitant “tick…tick” of the clock is heard overhead as time seems to suddenly stop.  The sandpaper, “thrush” of my jittery fingers drag the volume up on the TV; “nick, nick” the volume rises.  All of these exonerated, over-the-top emotions are courtesy of the brilliant and nail-biting CBS television show Harper’S Island.

The series, being dealt the DVD edition treatment this week from CBS DVD, is a series I originally looked over this past spring season.  The show, created by Ari Schlossberg, who penned the 2005 horror/thriller Hide And Seek, and from Executive Producer Jon Turteltaub, who helmed the other CBS hit Jericho, take us on a wild gut-wrenching thriller ride.  Excellently these two masterminds have brought us a series that is unique and original, something that horror and »

'The Final Destination' Rules Labor Day Box Office

7 September 2009 7:22 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

As predicted, "The Final Destination" pushed through the Labor Day weekend atop the North American box office. Having secured its #1 place at the chart for a second consecutive week over the three-day weekend, the Warner Bros.' 3D horror-fest stayed strong on the top position with $15.3 million that was counted from September 4 to 7.

With the additional Labor Day tally, the fourth chapter in the horror series has lifted its total earning to $50.4 million after only eleven days in theaters. That made this David R. Ellis-directed thriller to be well on track in becoming the franchise's highest grossing film, as it will easily beat 2006's "Final Destination 3" bow of $54.1 million.

Overseas, "Destination" has narrowly outgrossed "Inglourious Basterds" and took over the #1 international box office title from the Quentin Tarantino's World War II epic. Although estimated to log in at $14 million on Sunday, September 6, it came up with a »

'The Final Destination' wins Labor Day box office race with $15.4 million

7 September 2009 11:53 AM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

It happens every year: Memorial Day kicks off the summer with a box office bang, and Labor Day ends it with a whimper. While overall numbers were up compared to this frame in 2008, audiences didn’t show much enthusiasm for anything at the multiplex this weekend. Three wide-release newcomers—All About Steve, Gamer, and Extract—grossed just $30.4 million combined, while holdovers The Final Destination, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9 took three of the top five slots. Here’s how it played out over the four-day weekend (Friday-Monday): 1. The Final Destination — $15.4 million Despite the short shelf-life of most teen horror pics, this 3-D sequel kept its grip on fans thanks to a dearth of exciting new offerings. The fourth chapter in the horror series has already earned $50.6 million in two weekends, putting it on track to become the franchise’s highest grosser, easily beating 2006’s Final Destination 3 ($54.1 million). 2. 'The Final Destination' Sustains #1 Lead at Box Office

6 September 2009 7:06 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"The Final Destination" is a box office champion one more time. After beating up "H2: Halloween 2" at the race to the top of North American box office last weekend, the fourth "Final Destination" film won the first three days of this Labor Day weekend and retained its #1 position for a second-straight weekend.

With an estimated $12.4 million in its pocket, the 3-D thriller came ahead of romantic comedy "All About Steve" and is thought to soon pass the $54 million bow collected by "Final Destination 3". So far, its ten days haul brought the ticket sales to the approximate total of $47.6 million, and it is expected to rake in more when the four days tally is counted.

Having broken the franchise's highest opening weekend debut last weekend, the movie that follows a group of teens who try to cheat death is on its way to become the top moneymaker of the series. »

The Final Destination wins second straight weekend

6 September 2009 11:41 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Traditionally the Labor Day weekend marks the end to the summer box office season, going out with a whimper instead of a bang. As the record books get written for 2009's close to summer, there were no surprises forthcoming at the box office history to talk about.

Warner Bros. The Final Destination retained the number one place at the box office for its second straight weekend in a row. The teen horror film tumbled 54% from its opening week gross and took in another $12.4 million dollars to bring its total North American gross to $47.5m. As it stands now The Final Destination just passed Final Destination 2 to become the third-highest grossing movie in the Fd franchise. It will easily become number one since only another $7 million dollars stands in the way between Tfd and Final Destination 3.

Ask Sandra Bullock how her summer has been and she'll likely tell you that it's been great. »

Stuntman to Light Himself on Fire to Set New Record

4 September 2009 2:50 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Imagine being willing to be punched, kicked, dropped, flung from speeding cars...and, yes, sometimes even lit on fire for your day job.

It's just another day in the life of your average stuntman (or woman), the unsung heroes who frequently put themselves in harm's way to make Robert Downey Jr. look athletic in Iron Man, Sylvester Stallone look invincible as Rambo...and Tom Cruise look taller in...well, any of his films (relax, it's a joke).

While most of us might dream of publishing a book, being a race car driver, dating a supermodel — or some other equally cliched ambition like that — Colin Decker’s ambition is to set himself on fire and burn for two minutes and 39 seconds.

Why two minutes and 39 seconds, you ask? Why, to break a record, of course.

This Sunday afternoon, he’ll make the attempt, reports The Vancouver Sun.

'Final Destination' Rips Into Top Spot

31 August 2009 5:34 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

In a rare instance of two movies of the same genre going head-to-head, the latest entries in the popular Final Destination and Halloween horror franchises collided and neither was particularly scathed by the clash, if their opening grosses were any indication. Overall, the weekend was the highest-grossing ever seen for the end of August and was up 27 percent from the same weekend last year, due mainly to the more potent new releases and recent holdovers. The Final Destination impaled $27.4 million on approximately 4,300 screens at 3,121 sites, scoring the biggest start of the franchise. The previous best was the last movie, Final Destination 3, at $19.2 million three and a half years ago. Included in the fourth movie's opening were 3D presentations at 1,678 sites, and they accounted for 70 percent or around $19 million of the gross. While each Final Destination is basically the same story, the new movie remained an attraction due to the »

Box Office: 3D Horror Still A Hit?

31 August 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

There was a period in time when 3D horror was thought of as a failed gimmick to get butts into theater seats. Using cheap stereoscopic (blue-and-red) technology to make films like 1982’s Parasite or even as far back as the original House of Wax, the concept got people into theaters, but the initial excitement of it eventually wore off in the 50’s, then again in the 80’s.

It seems like the trend has come back once again, as The Final Destination in digital 3D popped up in the top of the box office this weekend, grossing roughly $28 million over the three days. This was bad news for Halloween II, the opposing horror film that opened this weekend, as it only grossed $17 million.

Though Halloween II, Rob Zombie’s sequel to his 2007 reboot, only came in at #3 on the chart, it still grossed $2 million more than their production budget on the film. »

3D Propels The Final Destination to Weekend Box Office Win

31 August 2009 8:44 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The Final Destination was not scared by Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 as the two horror films squared off at the weekend box office. Bolstered by the higher 3D ticket prices, The Final Destination beat expectations and raked in an estimated $28.3 million. The previous series high of $19.2 million came from Final Destination 3. Thus far, each successive Final Destination film has beaten the previous film in ticket sales. Halloween 2 earned $17.4 million, good enough for third place and talks of another sequel. Second place went to Inglourious Basterds which dropped 47% from its opening weekend with $20 million. District 9 continues to play strong by adding another $10.7 million to its pot. With a domestic gross now above $90 million, the $100 million barrier is all but guaranteed to be crossed. 'The Final Destination' Scares Off 'H2: Halloween 2' at Box Office

30 August 2009 7:26 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

In a weekend that was highlighted with the release of two horror franchises, "The Final Destination" showed its dominance against "H2: Halloween 2". The fourth installment of the "Final Destination" series outran the sequel of director Rob Zombie's "Halloween" and closed the three-day weekend by grabbing the #1 spot at the North American box office.

Enjoying a boost from higher ticket prices for its 3-D runs in 1,678 3-D screens among the 3,121 theaters it was played, the thriller movie about a group of teens who try to cheat death collected an estimated $28.3 million. The opening weekend bow marked the highest opening weekend of the franchise as "Final Destination 3", which held the series' previous best only pulled in $19.1 million in 2006.

This New Line-produced "Final Destination" movie also gave Warner Bros. an industry-leading eight No. 1 openings this year. Commenting on the impressive run, Warners' Executive Vice President of Distribution Jeff Goldstein said, »

Box Office Beat Down: The Final Destination Makes a Killing with $28.3 Million

Weekend Box Office

1) The Final Destination - $28.3 million

2) Inglourious Basterds - $20 million

3) Halloween II - $17.4 million

4) District 9 - $10.7 million

5) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - $8 million

6) Julie & Julia - $7.4 million

7) The Time Traveler's Wife - $6.7 million

8) Shorts - $4.8 million

9) Taking Woodstock - $3.7 million

10) G-Force - $2.8 million

It was a classic horror showdown this weekend, with two successful horror franchises squaring off, and death coming out on top... in 3-D. The Final Destination came out on top at the box office with an estimated $28.3 million. The opening weekend take is the highest in the franchise's history, besting the $19.1 million that Final Destination 3 grossed in 2006. Screening in 3,121 theaters, The Final Destination snagged a healthy $9,079 per-screen average and should easily have made back its $40 million budget in the next couple of days.

Halloween II came in third place with $17.4 million, behind last week's box office champ, Inglourious Basterds, which took in an impressive $20 million, »

Box Office Report: 'The Final Destination' scares up top spot with $28.3 million

30 August 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

For many, the creative relevance of 3-D cinema remains an open question. But this weekend reinforces the format's commercial power at the box office. Despite a moviegoing weekend dominated by R-rated violent thriller-type films ostensibly shooting for the same audience, The Final Destination scared up $28.3 million for an easy No. 1 berth, according to early estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office. That's almost $10 million better than the opening frame for the last film in the creatively-dispatching-model-perfect-unknown-actors franchise (which, for those keeping track, was Final Destination 3). There's really only one reason why: Although just over half its 3,121 theaters were screening the flick in 3-D, fully 70 percent of its box office take came from 3-D theaters. And theaters typically charge an extra few bucks per ticket for the privilege of watching the film with those comfy stereoscopic glasses. Rest assured, despite its title (and its abysmal "C" CinemaScore grade), this is by »

Box-Office Oracle: Aug. 28 - Aug. 30, 2009

#1 movie predicted correctly: 4 Weeks in a Row 1. The Final Destination The Final Destination will win the weekend even with Halloween II in the way thanks to a 3-D boost. It has more theaters than Zombie's film, and it also has a bit of a better reputation considering the negative critical response to Zombie's 2007 effort. Final Destination 3 opened at $19.2m and technically I'm knocking this one ten percent, but the 3-D gains brings that ten percent back into play. Estimate: $19.3 million 2. Halloween II I don't feel great about this weekend because three films could legitimately win the thing. The last Halloween pulled in $26.4m, so clearly I have this one coming down from that result. My reasoning is as follows: Final Destination will bleed off around 20%. Add in the overall audience disappointment in the first one (not everyone, but enough to where it bled a bunch week to week) and »

Is The Final Destination the End?

13 August 2009 2:15 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

When The Final Destination opens on August 28, it will be the first Final Destination in 3 years and the fourth in 10 years. But will this be the, dare we say it, the final Final Destinaton? ShockTilYouDrop spoke with producer Craig Perry and asked that very question.

Well, there's a lot of factors. When we started talking about Final Destination 4, any time you see a four next to something, it feels like you're pushing your luck and making Leprechaun. We all kind of realized that as much as we obviously have a lineage that we want to follow that this will probably be the last movie for a variety of reasons and why not just do it right and call it The Final Destination. Actually, the marketing department had that stroke of genius that I think actually speaks to both the sort of consummation of the franchise, delivering on everything the first three are sort of positing, »

Scary movie smackdown: 'Final Destination' or 'Halloween'?

11 August 2009 12:39 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I'll never understand why Hollywood studios don't actually release their horror movies on Halloween when folks are actually, you know, in the mood to see people get impaled and stuff. They always seem to jump the gun and release them in September. Or nowadays, as early as August. Just take a gander at your movie release calendar and you'll see that this year, on Aug. 28, there's a murderous, maniacal marquee smackdown between Rob Zombie's Halloween II and Final Destination 3-D. Now, before we take a look at the trailers of these bad boys (embedded below) and ask you to vote on which one you're more excited to see, let's quickly settle some confusion about the titles. First, Zombie's Halloween II is in no way related to 1981's Halloween II or 1998's Halloween: H20. It's its own thing (even though, strangely the latest teaser talks about Michael Myers' "final destiny »
