Live-Action ‘Jetsons’ Movie Gets ‘Smart’ New Director

2 November 2009 11:32 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

How did this news slip past us all? According to a source that the guys over at Pajiba have, Robert Rodriguez won’t be directing the long in-development live-action Jetsons movie. It was only this summer that we got word that The Jetsons was firmly on its way, with an early draft of the script having been written, and Rodriguez himself sounding enthusiastic after he said he’s been working on ideas for the adaptation for a long time.

However, Rodriguez has his fingers in a lot of pies right about now: He has his full-length Machete movie (currently in the editing stages); he’s heavily involved in the Predators reboot; apparently he has Spy Kids 4 in the works (it was only a matter of time…); and, of course, there’s the much-anticipated, long gestating Sin City 2 (which could be filming next year, last we heard). So it’s kind of understandable, »

Warner Bros. Picks Up Dirty Old Men

2 November 2009 11:07 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The good folks over at Warner Brothers have picked up a new spec comedy script by writers Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge, titled Dirty Old Men. The script centers around two old "players", one of which has finally met the love of his life, and the other, his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years, who is determined to break the relationship up at any cost. So, just another comedy script, eh? No sir! The flick so far has the ever busy and always entertaining Morgan Freeman attached to play the role of the wingman, and currently Warners are shooting for a reunion between Freeman and Jack Nicholson, his co-star of the 2007 comedy The Bucket List (which had the two playing a couple of old geezers trying to fulfill a list of their dreams before they kicked the bucket). Nicholson isn't the only one in demand though; the director »

Robert Rodriquez Moves On From The Jetsons

2 November 2009 9:17 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Robert Rodriquez has apparently found other shiny little movie trinkets to capture his eye and has left the remake of the 60’s Sci-Fi cartoon “The Jetsons” to other interested parties. And it seems that the interested party is Peter Segal, the director of “Get Smart” and “Tommy Boy”. According to Pajiba, Peter is circling, circling. “The Jetsons” would make a pretty good movie. No word on a finished script that I’ve seen. We’ll keep you in the loop. »

Peter Segal Replaces Rodriguez on 'The Jetsons'?

2 November 2009 8:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

By: John Gholson

This movie should've happened fifteen years ago, and it should've starred Tim Allen. It didn't, so here we are in 2009 talking about whether or not a live-action movie based on Hanna-Barbera's animated "futuristic" sitcom The Jetsons will ever see the light of day.

Pajiba says yes, and they say that Peter Segal (Get Smart, Tommy Boy) is the director currently circling the long-dormant project. Director Robert Rodriguez (Shorts) was once enthusiastic about taking a crack at the material, but Warner Brothers wants to move on the project soon and Rodriguez keeps a full plate. Unlike Pajiba, though, I don't see this potential shift in directors as a huge step down.

Morgan Freeman Joins Dirty Old Men

2 November 2009 2:45 AM, PST | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Warner Bros. has picked up a comedy written by Josh Cagan (Bandslam) and Greg Coolidge (Employee Of The Month), to which Morgan Freeman is attached to star and Peter Segal (Get Smart) may possibly direct.

The script has a working title of Dirty Old Men and tells the story of an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life, leading his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) to do everything to break up the new couple. The tone of the film has been described as similar to The Wedding Crashers and The 40 Year Old Virgin.

Apparently Warner would love to have Jack Nicholson star in the playboy role, which would see him reteam with Freeman after they starred together in 2007's The Bucket List, but so far the actor is not attached.

Freeman will next be seen in Warners' Invictus, which sees him portraying »

Morgan Freeman Is A Dirty Old Man?

1 November 2009 11:29 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Morgan Freeman, a man who boasts so much gravitas that he got away with explaining Wanted's Loom of Fate without sounding stupid, is set to play a Dirty Old Man in his next film (assuming it keeps its working title), with Peter "Get Smart" Segal ready to direct. The story centres on two playboys, one played by Freeman. When his best friend finally falls in love after forty years of playing the field, Freeman does everything he can to sabotage the match, in a scenario they describe as "Wedding Crashers meets 40 Year-Old Virgin". Kinda sounds rather a lot like My Best Friend's Wedding with old men if you ask us, but without the karaoke (probably).Josh Cagan (Bandslam, which isn't quite as bad as its poster would have you believe) and Greg Coolidge (Employee of the Month, which is as bad as the poster suggested) wrote the script, and »

Morgan Freeman Is an Old Dirty Man But Also One with Dignity and Gravitas

1 November 2009 11:23 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

If you want strong, quiet dignity with a voice so reassuring that you want it for every audiobook ever made, you call Morgan Freeman.  That’s why him shouting “Somebody kill This motherfucker!” in “Wanted” was one of the best movie moments of 2008.  Watching Freeman subvert his image has great comedic potential and it looks like Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge’s script, “Old Dirty Man” may do just that.  Hit the jump for more details.

According to THR:

The script, which had a working title of “Dirty Old Men,” revolves around an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple. The tone is described as similar to “Wedding Crashers” and “The 40-Year-Old Virgin.”

Freeman has attached himself to the Warner Bros. flick with Peter Segal (”Get Smart”) in talks to direct. »

Morgan Freeman Is a 'Dirty Old' Man

1 November 2009 11:22 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We just updated the path of the live-action The Jetsons, which will move forward without its long-time developer, Robert Rodriguez. The theory being pushed is that Peter Segal (Get Smart) would be brought in to direct. If that does happen, it'll have to wait.

Segal is set to direct a new comedy starring Morgan Freeman called Dirty Old Men, which Warner Bros. just picked up from writers Josh Cagan and Greg Coolidge. The Hollywood Reporter says the project "revolves around an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years (Freeman) who does everything to break up the new couple."

It's being described as similar to Wedding Crashers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Only with an aroma of analgesic ointment. »

1 November 2009 11:03 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Director Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Get Smart) is making news today from a few different places. Apparently, his directorial slate -- which still includes the long-gestating superhero flick Shazam! -- could be getting very busy in the near future. It revolves around an an aging playboy who finally meets the love of his life and his best friend and wingman for the past 40 years who does everything to break up the new couple. Morgan Freeman has already signed onto the project to play the trusty wingman and exec produce, and he's said to be thinking of re-teaming with The Bucket List co-star Jack Nicholson, or so the studio hopes. Is Peter Segal Taking Over for Rodriguez on The Jetsons Movie?

1 November 2009 8:25 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It only takes about five months for a project to completely fall apart. Back in June we reported that Robert Rodriguez was aiming to shoot his live-action Jetsons movie sometime next year. Rodriguez has a lot on his plate and is obviously still producing both Machete (which is in post-production) and Predators (which is currently shooting), but most of his projects have fallen apart, including his sci-fi project Nerveracker (which Dimension Films bumped off their slate a few months ago). Back on The Jetsons, though, Pajiba is reporting that the project fell apart during the summer and Rodriguez left. Who is he being replaced by? According to their sources, Peter Segal, who last directed Get Smart for Warner Brothers, is the studio's top choice. Apparently his deal is not in place yet, but it's a sure bet he will be the one who ends up taking over the reigns. They »

Has Robert Rodriguez Abandoned 'The Jetsons' Film?

31 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

With a full roster of projects on his desk, including Machete, Predators and the fourth Spy Kids movie, Robert Rodriguez may not have time to work on The Jetsons live action movie that he's been promising for some while now.

According to a report over at Pajiba, Rodriguez has decided to abandon The Jetsons, leaving Warner Bros to seek a replacement.

Word is the studio is very happy with the script by John Altchulder and Dave Krinsky (Blades of Glory), but it has had a difficult time keeping the talent attached. The site reports that Jim Carrey was once offered the role of George Jetson, but turned it down.

Pajiba also claims that Warners is apparently now in negotiations with director Peter Segal (Get Smart) to develop The Jetsons. Despite the studio's happiness with the existing script, it will apparently be scrapped, though Warners is not ready to solicit new »

'Get Smart' Director to Take Over 'The Jetsons'

30 October 2009 11:27 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Rumor has it, director Robert Rodriguez is not going to direct "The Jetsons" and Warner Bros. is likely to bring in director Peter Segal as a replacement. Being the first to break the possibility was Pajiba, although the site noted that while Segal potentially takes over the job, no deal has been struck between the studio and the helmer.

Should Segal come on board, Warners plans to start fresh with this live-action version of the futuristic 1960s cartoon. The studio, according to Pajiba, has scrapped the script that John Altschuler and Dave Krisnky turned in last year, and will start looking for new screenwriters as soon as the director of "Get Smart" is signed.

On the Rodriguez's exit, Pajiba detailed that the 41-year-old director abandoned "The Jetsons" after Warners is not able to sign in any talent, including Jim Carrey for the George Jetson role, and his latest film "Shorts »

Steve Carell Ready to Hit the 'Links'

27 October 2009 6:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The lovable and hilarious Steve Carell is a bona-fide TV star, but his big screen career has never taken off quite the same way. There were plenty of successes along the way, and he hasn't had an honest to goodness flop (actually, Evan Almighty lost a whole lot of money), but he just hasn't had that movie role that makes you think "Uh-oh, I think Scranton is going to get a new branch manager," you know? I don't know if Carell's latest will be the role that makes him into a full-fledged movie star, but The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog is reporting that the comedian is in talks to star in the golf-comedy Missing Links.

Links is based on Sports Illustrated writer Rick Reilly's novel by the same name, and it centers on a group of working class friends who scheme to sneak into an elite country club »

Samuel L. Jackson & The Rock In ‘The Other Guys’

27 October 2009 7:15 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Fresh off the set in New York come a slew of photos of Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson from the upcoming Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg buddy-cop comedy, The Other Guys. Those familiar with Johnson’s film repertoire might be surprised to find that there is not single tutu, fairy costume or alien child associated with this latest role.

The film is a collaboration between Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers) and Chris Henchy. The pair recently worked with Henchy writing and McKay producing this summers Land of the Lost.

Set in New York City, The Other Guys follows Detective Allen Gamble (Ferrell), a forensic accountant who’s more interested in paperwork than hitting the streets, and Detective Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg), who has been stuck with Allen as his partner ever since an embarrassing public incident with his quick trigger finger. Allen and Terry idolize the city’s top cops, »

Steve Carell To Topline Missing Links?

27 October 2009 3:47 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Risky Business is reporting that Warner Bros. Pictures has acquired Missing Links, a golf comedy based on a novel from Espn's Rick Reilly, and that Steve Carell is attached to star as a golfer angling for a better place to play.

Carell is already attached to produce the picture via his Carousel Productions, while the company's Vance DeGeneres and Charlie Hartsock are on board as executive producers. Bobby Cohen (Revolutionary Road) is also producing, and Jay Lavender (The Break Up) is penning the adaptation.

Reilly's 1997 comedic novel tells of the group of bumblers who, after playing for years at a run-down municipal golf course in a working-class Boston neighborhood, concoct a series of schemes that they hope will lead to them teeing off at a nearby elite club.

Carell will next be seen in the romantic-comedy Date Night, and is also on board for the sequel to Get Smart.
