The Box

Directed by: Richard Kelly

Cast: Cameron Diaz, James Marsden, Frank Langella

Running Time: 1 hr 55 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 6, 2009

Plot: A financially desperate couple (Diaz, Marsden) is randomly presented with a box – inside the box is a simple red button. However, there is a catch – if they press the button, they will be awarded one million dollars. At the same time, someone in the world that they don’t know will be killed.

Who’S It For? Like the title object’s existence, The Box is a film made for the curious: those curious to see how the Donnie Darko director does with a mainstream budget, or those curious to see how the film should be placed in a list of this year’s bad-funny movies. Fans of psychological thrillers might want to take a gander, but at their own risk.

Morgan Freeman has reached a settlement with the woman who was in his car when he crashed in Mississippi last year, reports The AP. The Dark Knight star and passenger Demaris Meyer both sustained injuries in the accident near the actor's home in February. She later alleged that he had been drinking before the crash and accused him of negligence. No charges were filed. An attorney for Freeman reportedly refused to disclose the (more) »

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Catwoman In 'Batman 3'?

5 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In all likelihood, we're still quite a ways off from any real news regarding a third "Batman" movie from director Christopher Nolan—if he's even returning to the franchise, that is—but that's not stopping us from wondering which Dark Knight villain we should see in the inevitable sequel.

There's no shortage of rogues to choose from, but the one I think is an absolute necessity is Catwoman. Given the state of Bruce Wayne's life after the events of "The Dark Knight," this feels like the perfect time to introduce Selina Kyle—the woman who could either help mend Bruce's fences, or bring all of the walls tumbling down.

If Nolan, David Goyer and the other folks at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. decide to go the Catwoman route, I think that these five actresses would be great for the role.

Fan Made: The Ultimate Batman-Related Man Cave

5 November 2009 8:15 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

While tooling around online I came across a post over at Brobible on the 15 Best Man Caves on the Internet. A Man Cave, for those who do not know, is usually an area somewhere in the house (normally the garage or a spare room) designated for the guys to hang out in and do "guy things" like watch tons of sports or, in the case of one Australian homeowner, tons of The Dark Knight. I'm not exactly sure how much this cost, though Gizmag tells us the screening room won the highly commended prize in the 'above $100,000' category at Cedia Asia Pacific annual awards, so more than likely this sucker cost a pretty penny to produce.

The room took about 20 days to piece together, while the installation of equipment and acoustic took another 8 days. Apart from very cool-looking and comfortable seats, as well as a big screen, the room »

Heath Ledger Receives Tribute for Final Performance

4 November 2009 3:54 PM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

While his performance in The Dark Knight earned Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar, it won’t have the distinction of being the last movie to star the late actor.

On December 25th, audiences will be able to see Ledger on screen one last time in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Ledger’s death came during the filming of the movie, and caused production on the film to be temporarily put on hold.

At the recent premiere of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Ledger was lauded by the film’s director, Terry Gilliam, who addressed going forward with the movie without Ledger’s presence.

Gilliam’s interview speaks very openly about the impact of Ledger on the cast and crew, and speaks highly of the actor saying, “We weren’t going to let Heath’s last work just disappear.”

And thank goodness for that.

David Goyer Thinks This Week's 'FlashForward' Is 'The Best Episode So Far'

4 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

A massive 12.4 million viewers tuned into "FlashForward" for the series premiere in September, with that number slowly petering off as the weeks have worn on.

But those original viewers might want to cancel their Thursday night plans and check out what "FlashForward" has in store this week, as showrunner David Goyer described the upcoming installment as "the best episode so far."

"I honestly think it's maybe the best thing that I've been involved in, absent or including 'Batman Begins' and 'The Dark Knight,'" Goyer told MTV News in an exclusive interview. "I'm that proud of it."

Titled "The Gift," this week's episode focuses on Agents Al Gough (Lee Thompson Young) and Demetri Noh's (John Cho) continued investigation into the mysterious Blue Hand, which Goyer described as an organization "with a very specific purpose in mind." Over the course of their investigation, a shadowy figure by the »

The Geek Beat: High and Lowbrow

3 November 2009 5:15 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Late last week, news broke that Anthony Hopkins had joined the cast of Thor as the Nordic paterfamilias, Odin. As I was writing up the news, I could practically see the Thor coverage that will titter across USA Weekend, Entertainment Tonight, and the local newspapers that are still landing on your driveway by 2010 and 2011. There will be so many articles shocked (shocked!) that an actor of Hopkins' caliber has chosen to embrace the pulp of the colored panels, smirking at pervasiveness of the geek trend, and engaging in shallow cultural criticism. It will look remarkably like USA Weekend's goggle-eyed look at the ladies of Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.

Now, there's no doubt that the pages of Marvel, DC, and all the Dark Horses in between are being taken far more seriously than they once were. I think it's also becoming a bit of a Hollywood trend, »

Prince Gyllenhaal

3 November 2009 3:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

One of the things I've never quite understood about videogames turned movies is how you're supposed to play them.

But I miss Jake Gyllenhaal so here he is all acrobatic like in The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

More Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Info

I haven't yet read any internet opinions about this new trailer, so haven't a clue what the consensus is but if it's hugely negative, I'm here to say that that's just silly. This looks exactly like the other video games turned movies (Tomb Raider) or movies that seem like they're based on video games even when they're not (The Mummy... or wait, was that?). They're all marketed in this same bombastic way with loud music, "fun" bits and CGI heavy promises of spectacle. Though I can't remember offhand if most trailers for films of this genre spend this much time describing »

Chin Han Survives the Year 2012

2 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Roland Emmerich is gearing up to destroy the world yet again in his epic film 2012, which is based on the predictions of the Mayan calendar. Actor Chin Han, best known for his role as Lau in The Dark Knight, returns to the big screen this November as Tenzin, a Tibetan Monk desperately trying to save his family from an encroaching tidal wave that has ripped apart most of the world. We recently caught up with Chin Han, and this is what he had to say about Emmerich's latest film:

Tell us about Tenzin? What sort of dynamic does he add to the film, and how does his presence play an important role in the events that transpire throughout 2012?

Heath Ledger’s DirecTV Commercial

2 November 2009 11:48 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Last week the online world threw a big fuss over DirecTV's newest television advertisement, which features David Spade pimping the satellite service in an altered scene from Tommy Boy, which of course includes his dead friend, comedian Chris Farley. And you may remember, this isn't the first time DirecTV has been accused of profiting off of the dead, as they came under fire last year for the same thing, with a similar ad altering Poltergeist, featuring Heather O'Rourke, an actress who died tragically in 1988 at age 12. When is this disgusting trend going to end? LandlineTV have created a faux DirecTV commercial showing where these tasteless advertising stunts might lead if we don't put a stop to it now -- that's right... Heath Ledger plugs DirecTV in a digitally altered scene from The Dark Knight. And it doesn't end there... Landline has also produced a couple more DirecTV commercials featuring John »

Posters To Drool On

2 November 2009 11:41 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I can't remember where I read about these amazing posters by Brandon Schaefer -- shame, because I hate not giving credit where it's due -- but I keep clicking back to them. I would love for movie marketing to be graphically enticing like this since the bulk of what's out there is poorly photoshopped floating celebrity heads. But at least we get brilliant poster imaging from adventurous repertory houses, museums and libraries and the like. Some of these posters at Seek and Speak are breathtakingly designed and smartly capitalize on either the title or a memorable image/theme from the film.

Here's a few I loved for The Blair Witch Project, The Dark Knight and Planet of the Apes.

Beautiful, yes? You can see more including clever takes on 8 1/2, Rear Window, Alien and other classic gems or modern hits here.

Julia Roberts Moves “In The Neighborhood”

2 November 2009 5:41 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

All has been quiet on the Julia Roberts front for quite some time now, which is unusual. In fact, her brother Eric Roberts is the one who has resurfaced and is coming back into the limelight with films like Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables, largely due to his great role in The Dark Knight.

But now, Julia is making headlines again: her production company Red Om Films has picked up the rights to the nonfiction novel In the Neighborhood by Peter Lovenheim. The novel sounds like a pretty simple idea with a workable premise for a film. The plot description according to Variety:

“[The novel] starts with Lovenheim’s realization of a lack of community in his suburban hometown. In an effort to get to know his neighbors better, he asks if he can come to their homes for sleepovers. His goal: to facilitate something more than the feeling of strangers living with strangers in modern suburbia. »

Bronson Movie Review

2 November 2009 4:58 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

The London penal system has no idea what to do with Michael Peterson, famously on record as its most violent criminal. If the film Bronson can be believed, their solution was to beat him intensely and often. Strangely, that’s also director Nicolas Winding Refn’s answer to his subject. Bronson, so named because Peterson adopts the full name of action star Charlie, is a pseudo-biography about a real life man who entered prison as a low-level bank robber and is still there today, infamous for taking hostages and inciting riots that would make Ufc fighters cower. Refn’s film isn’t the whole truth; it might not even be half the truth, but it creates a violently swirling vortex around its central figure, played to rage-filled precision by Tom Hardy.

All my life I’ve wanted to be famous” says Bronson in the film’s opening which has Hardy »

For Michael Jackson, This Was It… Sort of

1 November 2009 7:16 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Well, so much for all the lousy hype about how great that Michael Jackson movie would do. Michael Jackson's This Is It made only $21 million on the weekend, and with its $3.7 million Thursday haul and $7.4 million Wednesday haul, its grand total is $32.5 million. Big deal! The studio made it sound as if this movie was going to be this monster hit in the USA, with sellouts everywhere etc. etc. Well, Paranormal Activity has been the one with the sellouts since it opened, and it made $16.5 million this weekend, almost taking down Michael Jackson. It came very close on both Friday and Saturday, in fact, to topping Jackson. On Friday it got $6 million to Jackson's $7.8 million, and on Saturday the margin was $7.1 million for Jackson to $6.5 million for Paranormal Activity. Overall, the haul for Paranormal Activity since it opened is $84 million. The bottom line is that Michael Jackson underperformed compared to what everyone expected, while »

Green Hornet will have 'fast and furious action' says director

1 November 2009 7:16 AM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Ever since comedic actor Seth Rogen announced a new Green Hornet movie, superhero fans have feared all the years of work to get the genre taken seriously would be undone.

The later Batman movies of the 90s had made comic book adaptations a neon-lit no-go zone and it took Blade and then X-Men to revive them again. Now we have solid releases such as The Dark Knight and Iron Man delivering accessible, credible hits.

Rogen, previously known as a chubby comedian and not for any action hero roles, has co-written Green Hornet with Superbad partner Evan Goldberg. He will also play the lead role of newspaper publisher Britt Reid who has an alter-ego as the eponymous masked crimefighter, aided by a martial arts sidekick called Kato and a hi-tech car called Black Beauty.

French filmmaker Michel Gondry stepped in to direct the feature earlier this year, and that has gone »

Horror Plus Action: Blade

31 October 2009 1:16 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Happy Halloween everyone! If you’re a regular Screen Rant reader you’ll have noticed (and hopefully read) our Halloween lead-up series called “Horror Plus.” If not, just so you know it’s a feature which sets out to showcase one film that combines horror with another genre. Each instalment will basically serve as a review of the film at hand, explaining why it’s such a good example of genre merging.

So far we’ve had Horror Plus Comedy: Shaun of the Dead, Horror Plus Sci-fi: Alien, Horror Plus Thriller: 28 Days Later and Horror Plus Crime: Se7en. And finally we come to our final installment which is Horror Plus Action.

So which film have we chosen which merges both the genres of horror and action so well? After much deliberation I decided to go with Stephen Norrington’s excellent 1998 comic-book adaptation, Blade, starring Wesley Snipes as the titular vampire killer. »

Watch This: Spider-Woman and Superman In Bollywood Love

31 October 2009 9:02 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In Bollywood, no filmmaker needs to worry about what studio owns the rights to what Marvel or DC character. Not even the boundaries between DC and Marvel have meaning, as evidenced by this delightful clip from India's Dariya Dil. Here, Superman shows off his dance moves on land and in the sky while courting Spider-Woman. Yep, Spider-Woman! Somewhere, Lois Lane is throwing a snit fit. It's hard enough to be secure knowing Wonder Woman is out there, but how can she compete with Jessica Drew's pheromones?

All joking aside, I think it's rather cool that at least one filmmaker in India decided Superman needed nothing less than a super woman as a costar (we still haven't done that here!), and that superheroines could use a nice afternoon in the sky. Can you imagine how hard it is for a superheroine to date a normal guy? He'd be threatened by her powers and fame, »
