Preview: Brothers

19 hours ago | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

About ten years ago, three promising young actors were working to secure a place amongst the Hollywood A-list. Natalie Portman had finished her first major acting role, as Mathilda in Luc Bessons Leon. She would go on to make her major breakthrough in the Star Wars prequels. Tobey Maguire had small roles in respected films like The Cider House Rules and Wonder Boys, then also got his major break in a high budget franchise, winning the role of Spiderman. Jake Gyllenhaal came to public attention through his role in sleeper Indie hit Donnie Darko, then hit the big time through a combination of big budget popcorn in The Day After Tomorrow, and critically acclaimed drama in Brokeback Mountain. Next week in the Us, these three actors, firmly A-List, come together for Jim Sheridan’s brothers.

The 10 Most Anticipated Summer Movies of 2010

24 November 2009 9:27 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s face it, every year there’s only a handful of movies that everyone who dares call himself a fanboy is dying to see. 2010 is no exception, with titles like “Iron Man 2″, “Prince of Persia”, and “Jonah Hex” on the slate, to name just three. Here is our extremely early preview of the 10 movies you should be keeping an eye on and we’ll be following very closely ahead of their Summer 2010 launch. Some are more fanboyish than others, but they’re all definitely intriguing. 10. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (June 30) The “Twilight” franchise? No interest whatsoever. David Slade directing another vampire movie? Oh hell yeah. As if Summit Entertainment’s “Twilight” franchise needed new injections of blood into its already impressive fanbase, the third part in the series, “Eclipse” got it anyway when the producers hired David Slade (”30 Days of Night”) to take a stab at darkening up the teen angst vampire series. »

Peter Iliff Writing American Gladiators Movie

24 November 2009 3:56 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

I’ll admit it. When I was a kid, I liked watching American Gladiators. Heck, I even made up my own version of The Eliminator to run through on the playground at school. Does that mean I think American Gladiators should be turned into a movie? Not in the slightest. Nevertheless, according to Variety, that’s just what’s going to happen.

We’ve known about the possibility of an American Gladiators movie since May, but now we know the details. According to the Variety article, screenwriter Peter Illiff, of Point Break fame, is drafting a script for the film which will “feature the Herculean characters as superheroes.” Joining Illiff on the project is producer Scott Mednick (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and the original creator of American Gladiators, Johnny Ferraro.

As unappealing as an American Gladiators-inspired movie sounds, there is some potential for the story. I’m intrigued by »

'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' Adaptation Goes To 'Conan' Writers

23 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I sure do love waking up to video game adaptation news, especially when it's as exciting as the latest update. For anyone who owns a PlayStation 3, one of the few must-own titles is undoubtedly "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" (and now its sequel, "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves"). Great game, in the running-and-jumping-and-climbing-and-shooting vein of the "Tomb Raider" series, with amazing graphics and an overall presentation which feels pulled straight from a Hollywood blockbuster. The story is pure popcorn, with an "Indiana Jones" kind of vibe, a plucky female sidekick and a gang of villains pulled straight from central casting.

News broke over the summer that Sony would be guiding "Uncharted" to a big screen adaptation, with "Hitman 2" (another, as-yet-unreleased game adaptation) writer Kyle Ward delivering a script. Well Ward's now out, according to a report yesterday on Latino Review. Replacing him -- assuming negotiations go well -- are "Conan" reboot writers »

Idris Elba Cast in Thor

22 November 2009 4:25 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

The talented British actor who made his name in the acclaimed HBO drama The Wire, has been cast as Heimdall, the guardian sentry of Asgard in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Thor.

As well as Samuel L. Jackson in his cameo role as Nick Fury, the cast of Thor includes Swedish favorite Stellan Skarsgard, Natalie Portman, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, the incredibly talented Tadanobu Asano, and the legendary Anthony Hopkins. Leading this strong cast are two relative unknowns in Tom Hiddlestone, who is playing antagonist Loki, and Chris Hemsworth (previously seen as George Kirk in J. J. Abrams’ Star Trek), who has been cast in the titular role.

This cast is interesting to say the least, but the recent additions of Asano and Elba (two of the more talented actors among the cast) seemed to have caused a stir amongst fans as they obviously do not resemble Norse gods. It »

'Twilight' Producer Offers Updates On 'Gears Of War' And 'Dead Space' Adaptations

19 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

It's common knowledge that video games have had a rough go of things in Hollywood. It's still a young entertainment medium -- comparing them chronologically to film, games have really only reached their "talkie" phase -- but a story is a story, and games really just haven't been adapted very well. That hasn't stopped filmmakers from trying to crack the code though.

There was some promise in "Halo," which Peter Jackson was going to produce and "District 9" helmer Neill Blomkamp was going to direct. Until it fizzled out, that is. The next great hope on the horizon is "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which hits theaters next May. Both of these games have rich, well-developed stories. "Twilight" producer Wyck Godfrey, who has his hands on adaptations of "Gears of War" and "Dead Space," argues that the big problem with game adaptations thus far is related mostly to the source narratives. »

New International Trailer for Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief

18 November 2009 1:26 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

Trouble-prone teen Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of school – but that’s the least of his problems. The gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters seem to have walked out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology texts and into his life – and they’re not happy. Zeus’ lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Now, Percy and his friends must embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true thief, save Percy’s family, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

We haven’t been following this film that much but after watching the trailer it looks like it could be a lot of fun. Sort of a modern day retelling of Clash of the Titans. Percy or Perseus? man I am good at connection. The film is based on a popular series of young adult novels written by Rick Riordan. »

Universal Takes Black Couple Out Of UK Couples Retreat Poster

17 November 2009 7:00 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The lack of minority representation in mainstream Hollywood movies is definitely not news. When was the last time a movie was released with a minority character that wasn't sold as a "black movie" or a "Latino movie?" We're trained to believe that Tyler Perry movies (for example) don't speak to any universal truths and somehow only convey messages that black audiences can relate to. Yet, movies released with all white characters are rarely considered niche films. Additionally, it's been a habit of Hollywood to give roles that should go to minorities (i.e. Prince of Persia or the kids in 21) to Caucasian actors in an effort to make the films more bankable and "universal." Now the La Times and the UK's Mail Online are reporting that Universal dropped the black couple (Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) from the poster for Couples Retreat in the UK. You'll see in the two »

‘20,000 Leagues’ Gets Torpedoed; McG Harpooned

17 November 2009 5:57 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Life is not looking good for Terminator Salvation director McG.

Disney has decided to indefinitely can the Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea project (surely to be a 3D CGI adventure-fest) and McG has stepped away from the film, which was slated to begin production in a little over two months from now. There has still been no big casting news for the film, which could have been a reason why Nemo has been canned.

Disney is looking for big tentpole films to fill the Pirates of the Caribbean vacuum with Prince of Persia, Tron Legacy and Nemo, but it’s likely that the only success they’ll achieve in that endeavor will be the inevitable fourth entry into the Pirates franchise, which Rob Marshall will direct in May.

Meanwhile, McG’s other project, Terminator 5, is also in limbo until the rights to the film are properly settled.

Reese Gets Away With Deacon and Ava

Reese Witherspoon headed out of La to spend her weekend in Ojai with Ava and Deacon. She paid a visit to a local farmers market on Sunday before stopping by a bookstore, where Deacon picked out a book of his own. Reese took a break to relax after making the talk show rounds to promote her new fragrance. She might be called back into duty if she accompanies Jake during his upcoming Prince of Persia promotion, but she always has her country getaway just an hour and a half away if she needs a break from the madness of La. Fan Rant: Please Don't Let Paul W.S. Anderson Direct 'Metal Gear Solid'

15 November 2009 6:03 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Dear Sony,

As I am sure you are aware, you own the film rights to any adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, the outstanding brainchild of video game auteur Hideo Kojima. I have no doubt that since the property became a gaming icon after Konami brought it to the Playstation in 1998 many have tried to get a film adaptation off the ground. I'm sure you've heard pitch after pitch, and maybe even solicited some of your own, so I appreciate that no ground has been made on turning the beloved series - arguably the most cinematic game of all time - toward the big screen.

Yet I fear that with a big budget adaptation of Prince of Persia on the horizon, you might start getting antsy about making a big budget video game movie of your own; and if that's the case, please do not take up Paul W.S. Anderson on »

Filming Prince of Persia Was "Really Fun" for Jake Gyllenhaal

15 November 2009 6:21 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

In a recent interview with Coming Soon, actor Jake Gyllenhaal discussed the extensive training required to play the role of Prince Dastan in Disney's big-screen spectacle, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Though Gyllenhaal said that the training was "40 days and 40 nights of misery," he admitted to having a great time doing it.

The best part of the movie I think is ... God, I mean, you play like this when you're a kid. This is how you play when you're a kid, and you go outside and I remember specifically many times I would go outside and be like, "I play him and you play him and let's fight!" And we're just like doing that every day. So the best part of it for me is because I've never done a lot of fighting — sword fighting, hand-on-hand, any type of combat that there is and any type of evasion and persuasion. »

The Week in Film: Oscar Bait

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!

First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.

Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.

The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »

Gemma Arterton Says Working on Prince of Persia Has Been "Brilliant"

12 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

British actress Gemma Arterton has become the "it" girl of action movies recently. First, she starred alongside Daniel Craig as Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, then she landed the role of Sam Worthington's love interest in Clash of the Titans, and soon she will be appearing as Princess Tamina opposite Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Arterton discussed how working on such high-profile projects is changing her life.

I'm really starting to feel it. Things have changed very quickly. Usually, I can kind of get on with my work and not think about it but it's actually having an effect on my life now and that's fine. I just have to kind of get used to it I suppose but it has been really, really quick and hey, why not, you know? If it's gonna happen, »
