Keira Knightley Officially 'My Fair Lady' for Joe Wright

26 October 2009 9:18 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Last summer, it was reported that Columbia was setting up a remake of My Fair Lady and that Keira Knightley was pursuing the iconic, Cockney role of Eliza Doolittle. While Knightley has been "attached" ever since, The Telegraph reports that Scarlett Johansson was also vying for the role. But Knightley won out, and the Telegraph not only confirms that she's got the role, but that Joe Wright will be directing. Emma Thompson is writing the script.

Knightley has been taking singing lessons ever since the possibility came up (and I actually think she proved she had a good voice in The Edge of Love), and I think she'll be absolutely charming as Doolittle. But then I'm biased towards her. Even if you aren't (and I expect many "too skinny!" comments), I think the combination of Wright and Thompson pushes this into very, very promising territory. Thompson can do no wrong by me. »

Can Keira Break the Hepburn Curse?

26 October 2009 9:08 AM, PDT | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

There are few Hollywood starlets that I rate more highly than marginally spade-faced Keira Knightley, and of all late actresses I am fairly unoriginal in my fondness for Audrey Hepburn, so the rumours quite some time ago that Knightley has signed up to fill Hepburn’s shoes in a planned remake of My Fair Lady is, for me, great news. The whispers around the project died down though, until today when stories have begun circulating that Joe Wright, director of Knightley in Pride and Prejudice and the amazing Atonement, is also set to be involved. So Audrey Hepburn is back, but unlike Audrey, Keira’s vocals won’t be dubbed if her singing in last year’s The Edge of Love  is anything to go by. The problem seems to be, however, whether or not any individual can ever truly succeed in a performance that has been done to perfection already, »

Miller Admires Knightley's Personal Life

20 October 2009 1:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sienna Miller wishes she was more like her pal Keira Knightley - because the Pirates Of The Caribbean star always keeps her private life out of the media.

The Factory Girl actress, who starred alongside Knightley in The Edge of Love in 2007, has become a paparazzi target after a stream of controversial love affairs.

She has dated actors Jude Law and Rhys Ifans, and was at the centre of a scandal last year after she started romancing married father-of-four Balthazar Getty.

Miller realises she has made mistakes, but insists she is still learning and doesn't possess the ability to make smart choices - unlike Knightley, who has managed to avoid such attention.

She says, "I haven't been as bright in some of the decisions I've made. Keira's just a more evolved person. I feel we live in the kind of culture now where you have to be very smart to navigate the right way, and I just don't have those smarts. I think with age and time it will change, but I can't obsess about it." »

The Edge of Love - Blu-ray Review

27 July 2009 7:04 AM, PDT | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

A commendable effort but not nearly as effective as it needs or wants to be due to a sporadic tone, .The Edge of Love. relays the love stories of two couples caught up in a blending of emotions with poet Dylan Thomas at the center of it all. No doubt gaining a healthy theatrical push in UK due to the participation of Brit stars Keira Knightley (who reteams with .The Jacket. director John Maybury), Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys and Cillian Murphy, the distinctly arthouse subject matter barely got it a second look here in the states despite the moderate marquee value on display. Admittedly, judging even via comparatively stodgy independent cinema standards, this pic can be somewhat »

Miller Struggled With G.I. Joe Role

21 July 2009 5:01 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Sienna Miller is apprehensive about the release of her upcoming movie G.I. Joe - because her performance is "not the best acting" she's done.

The Brit star plays a leather-clad spy in the film - and insists it was a challenge to move from dramas such as Factory Girl and The Edge Of Love to an all-action role.

She explains, "G.I. Joe is not going to be the best acting work I've ever done.

"The guys I'm fighting are all really tall - and I'm not. I have to kick a lot of them in the head, so just learning to kick very high was a challenge. Looking like you're a good fighter is hard."

And the 27 year old admits her performance was hindered by her costume - a black leather catsuit.

Miller adds, "I won't be wearing one again. Squeezing myself into that with the aid of talcum powder every day for five months was more than enough. I could barely move in it." »

Lohan's Film Flop To Go Straight To Cable TV

26 March 2009 12:10 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Lindsay Lohan's film career has been dealt another blow - her latest movie will not be released to cinemas.

Labor Pains will premiere on cable TV in America in July before going straight to DVD in August.

In the film, Lohan plays a woman who fakes pregnancy in a bid to keep her job.

In a recent interview, the actress revealed she's working on a new movie with Oscar winner Sean Penn. »

Lohan Blames Media Scrutiny For Stalled Acting Career

24 March 2009 6:30 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Lindsay Lohan has blasted the media for portraying her as "spoiled, ungrateful and unprofessional", and hampering her Hollywood career in the process.

The Mean Girls star is frequently in and out of the headlines for her allegedly turbulent romance with girlfriend Samantha Ronson, as well as verbal run-ins with her father.

But the 22-year-old actress, who has spent time behind bars and in rehab for drug and alcohol issues, insists she is no longer the party girl she used to be - and she's simply trying to focus her energies on her stalling movie career.

She is urging critics to leave her and DJ Ronson alone and stay out of her personal life - because she just wants to do "positive" things with her fame.

Lohan tells E! Online, "They need to stop saying we're fighting. People (are) telling lies about me to her and all this garbage. I'm really a good person and I have a good heart and just want to work. The only reason I go to clubs is to hear Samantha spin or be normal.

"I don't drink, I don't do drugs and I don't lie. I love to act and write and be creative, and I want to help people by playing characters that can send a positive message out to whomever may need it."

And Lohan is also fed up with the obsessive devotees that buy into all the tabloid gossip about her - claiming they are the ones fuelling the press interest in her love life.

She adds, "All the sicko fans and the noise is so distracting... If (only) people would just stop judging me and accusing me and making me out to be this aloof, spoiled, ungrateful and unprofessional person that I am not and could never be."

Lohan has completed just one movie - the upcoming Labor Pains - since 2007 flop I Know Who Killed Me, and recently lost out on the lead role in director Tim Burton's forthcoming remake of Alice In Wonderland. She also pulled out of Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge of Love, and was replaced by Sienna Miller.

Miller & Knightley's Nights In

21 March 2009 7:05 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actresses Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley shunned the Hollywood lifestyle while shooting a movie together - they preferred crossword puzzles to crazy nights out.

The duo lived together on location in Wales while filming Dylan Thomas biopic The Edge Of Love in 2007. And Miller insists her pal's level head meant evenings indoors playing cards rather than partying.

She tells Britain's Daily Express newspaper, "(Knightley's) ridiculously mature for her age. I am 12 compared with her.

"We lived in a house in Wales together. We'd play cards, do crosswords, that kind of thing." »

Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley in The Edge of Love

Photo: Capitol Films John Maybury has directing films for some time, but it wasn't until 2005's The Jacket starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody that he popped up on my radar. I didn't particularly like that film, but I'm not about to throw a guy under the bus after the first go 'round, especially when his follow-up stars Knightley, yet again, along with Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys. While I would say The Edge of Love is certainly a step up from The Jacket it never quite manages to get over the hump as the story seemed almost too big for only one two hour feature. This film could have been a three-hour epic and Maybury certainly shot it as one, but the fact it works on any level is due to a great cast that saves many »

Film: Review: The Edge Of Love

19 March 2009 11:55 AM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

While World War II raged across Europe, Dylan Thomas served the United Kingdom by writing scripts for propaganda films and reading his poems on the radio, though he struggled throughout with conflicting impulses. How could he support the war effort with positive messages, yet still satisfy a poet’s need to document pain and horror? In John Maybury’s period romance The Edge Of Love—written by noted British playwright Sharman Macdonald—all of London seems to be suffering a similar identity crisis. Rakish aesthetes are doing their part for the troops, while proper society types are behaving like bohemians ... »

The Edge of Love

Release Date: March 13 (limited)

Director: John Maybury

Writer: Sharmon Macdonald

Cinematographers: Jonathan Freeman

Starring: Keira Knightley, Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Matthew Rhys

Studio/Run Time: Lionsgate, 110 mins.

While he plays a major part in the film, The Edge of Love is not a Dylan Thomas biopic. It’s a pity though, because pinning down what exactly the film is, or is trying to be, is pretty difficult. On the one hand, it’s a story about Britain during WWII, where characters are scrambling or ignoring bomb sirens and discussing enlistment. It’s also obviously a love story, focusing on Thomas and his wife’s struggles with another couple.  Everyone is attracted to everyone else and no character is above sleeping with anyone else regardless of the pain it will cause the entire group. When William Killick (Cillian Murphy) heads to the front lines, Thomas tries to turn the film into »

Knightley's Singing Terror

15 March 2009 4:05 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Keira Knightley was left red-faced after she was filmed singing in The Edge Of Love - because she "sounded like a pubescent boy".

The British actress was told she would lip-synch for her part in the 2008 period drama, in which she plays a lover of poet Dylan Thomas.

But she was terrified when director John Maybury pushed her into giving a live performance in front of 150 members of the cast and crew - and Knightley admits she had to settle her nerves with a little alcohol.

She tell's Moviefone.com, "I thought that this is sort of one of those horrendous dreams you have, you know, those anxiety dreams... And the first time I sang, I sounded like a pubescent boy because I was so nervous my voice just went sky-high. It was awful. And I could see all these faces going, 'Oh my God, you're crap.' So I had a shot of vodka, and then it was fine after that." »

Knightley Shrugs Off Nude Scene With Miller

13 March 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Keira Knightley was unfazed when her The Edge Of Love co-star Sienna Miller stripped completely nude to film a bath scene together - insisting it's all part of her job.

The stars play two lovers of poet Dylan Thomas in the 2008 period drama, and both bared their flesh for the steamy scene.

But while Knightley opted to remain partially clothed for shoot, she insists she wasn't alarmed when Miller got naked before jumping into the tub.

Instead, she was more concerned about the freezing temperatures of the bath water.

Knightley tells Moviefone.com, "I think we're both used to doing things like that in our job. It was very soapy water, and it was a closed set and all the rest of it. And I actually had clothing on. She didn't. Well, I had something on. No, it was sort of fine. It was just a problem because the bath water got really cold." »

Hot on the heels of Watchmen comes another book adaption 20 years in the making, Michael Chabon's The Mysteries Of Pittsburgh. While unlikely to generate anything on the scale of Watchmania, Chabon's debut novel is well-loved, and fans will be reassured by Rawson Marshall Thurber's near-reverential adaptation. Thurber, the man who brought us the mighty Wight Goodman as writer/director of Dodgeball, also directs. The trailer looks promising enough, with Sienna Miller pitched back into love triangle territory after her turn as one of Dylan Thomas' paramours in The Edge Of Love. Miller plays glamorous dilettante Jane Bellwether, who along with small-time hood Cleveland Arning (the ever-excellent Peter Sarsgaard) and college graduate Art Bechstein (Jon Foster) wiles away a hot Pennsylvanian summer in Chabon's coming-of-age tale. With a growly Nick Nolte turn, Mena Suvari, and Sienna Miller in a bikini, what's not to like?
