Have not read the manga, but have heard about it on numerous occasions... I don't like anime very much myself. So, what I'm about to say is as objective as it comes i guess...
I was very curious to see what Death Note was about because I had heard the manga was pretty cool. So I just watched the first episode out of curiosity... and I loved it! The animation shocked me because I never have high expectations from this genre: unlike most animes, the characters actually have very fluid movement. They also look a lot better, a lot more real than in normal animes - for example I was pleased to see a nose that has an actual shape and not just that half a triangle they usually use!!! Indeed, there are some morality problems here - I myself do not agree with the main character's way of thinking. But it doesn't force any ideas on the viewer. All that the moral values of the characters do, is just build up complex personalities and add to the interesting story.
Fan of anime or not, it's definitely worth a try... You might be in for a surprise!!!
