Leonard Hofstadter and Sheldon Cooper are both brilliant physicists working at Cal Tech in Pasadena, California. They are colleagues, best friends, and roommates, although in all capacities their relationship is always tested primarily by Sheldon's regimented, deeply eccentric, and non-conventional ways. They are also friends with their Cal Tech colleagues mechanical engineer Howard Wolowitz and astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali. The foursome spend their time working on their individual work projects, playing video games, watching science-fiction movies, or reading comic books. As they are self-professed nerds, all have little or no luck with women. When Penny, a pretty woman and an aspiring actress from Omaha, moves into the apartment across the hall from Leonard and Sheldon's, Leonard has another aspiration in life, namely to get Penny to be his girlfriend. Each of the male characters has a signature clothing article that is worn in virtually every episode: Sheldon, t-shirts worn over long-sleeve shirts; Leonard, hoodies worn over a t-shirt and under a jacket; Raj, sweater-vest worn over a shirt, and usually under some type of outerwear; Howard, dickie worn under some type of outerwear. Howard usually has a pin on the left side of his dickie of the head of a space alien, and he wears large belt buckles. See more
In Season 7, (708) everyone has Thanksgiving at the Wollowitz home (Penny learns she's married to Zach.) Raj is in the kitchen cooking as Mrs. Wollowitz is bedridden from Gout. ("Did someone say pie?") and the refrigerator doors open with hinges on the RIGHT so the camera can't film it's contents. In Season 8, (818) a power failure causes all of Howard's late mother's cooking to thaw, creating a strong emotional reaction from Howard. They decide to have everyone over for one last Mrs. Wollowitz meal. The same pale yellow refrigerator now is hinged on the left side so that the camera can film the inside of the freezer, filled with Brisket, Kugal, Meatloaf, and Chicken soup. Late that same season, (823) Howard, Raj, and Stewart are cleaning the kitchen ("It's A Hard Knock Life" Charnin/ Strouse) and the hinges are back on the right. This is an intentional goof as it's easier and cheaper to not have to expose the interior of the refrigerator; but still, we notice. See more

One of the final cards to appear in the credit sequence is the vanity card for Chuck Lorre Productions. In keeping with his practice on "Dharma and Greg" and "Two and a Half Men", there is a different message on the card each week, written by Chuck Lorre himself. See more
