Jessicka Rabid; No Way to Treat a Lady, 24 November 2008

Baring in mind Dirty Harry's adage about opinions, Jessicka Rabid star, Elske Mccain, does a good job of depicting a sympathetic character in the title role. Jessicka is a mute child-like woman, cared for, or more kept by, creepy white trash relations. She shrieks while washed down with a hose and wears a dog collar, sometimes put into a cage. Cursed with a rockin' body, she is frequently taken advantage of by her keepers and their nasty friends.

Occupying some similar dimension to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, this is probably not something to share with your church group, but as over the top low to no budget movies go Jessicka Rabid has a lot to recommend it. The concept, script, and most of all the acting were better than a lot of larger budget movies.

Jessicka has nasty character dynamics. For its technical flaws, this flick pulls off the depiction of those dynamics at least as well as Zombie's remake of Halloween. With the prolonged overacted hostile interactions in that movie, it just screamed "script" to me much of the time.

I almost always find that I predict plot twists in movies. I did that here a few times but far less in advance than I usually do. Having seen stills I was wondering how she would end up with fangs, but I saw it coming only when she was laughing and thinking about the dog. With hints of the origins of some aspects of the werewolf myth, the dog bites her prior to her progress further into her role as an animal, after which she turns the tables on her abusers. The fangs relate to a fitting and outrageous comeuppance for one nasty creep; only one of the reasons I think this movie deserves cult status. Another being peanut butter in the bedroom!
