Jonathan Demme To Animate 'Zeitoun' By Dave Eggers

29 October 2009 3:05 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

Today's news (via Slash Film) that Dave Eggers Zeitoun is to be adapted for the big-screen in animation by veteran director Jonathan Demme may come as something of a surprise to those who have followed the Oscar-winning director's hit and miss career.

We should confess that before Rachel Getting Married came along we'd all but given up on Demme following a string of films that were (at best) bad and (at times) so absolutely terrible as to destroy our faith in cinema as either entertainment or art. But his last film was fantastic and so we can do nothing but look forward to the prospect of the Silence of the Lambs director taking on hot-as-you-like reporter, publisher, novelist and scriptwriter (Where The Wild Things Are) Eggers' remarkable non-fiction tale of a New Orleans family's experiences of the devestating 2005 hurricane and its aftermath.

According to reports, the idea to animate the »

AFF09 Daily Dispatch: Day Five

27 October 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Monday was Arbor Day for me. That is, I watched two Austin Film Festival films up at the Arbor Cinema. The best anyone can do is three features a day from this point on, but I was too busy watching a screener to make it any earlier (and more on that later).

I don't know how much of it was rainy Monday, post-conference, or just being out of downtown, but the Aff movies at the Arbor were not crowded. That's not to say it was empty -- there was a respectable sized crowd for both films I saw -- but no one was forced for sit in the front row. Keep that in mind for all venues for the next three days; unless you're late, you're likely to get into everything now. If it's at the Paramount, you'll get in.

First up for me was How I Got Lost (pictured »

Blu-ray Review: Monsoon Wedding (Criterion Collection)

20 October 2009 2:43 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

My experience with Mira Nair is limited at best. I did not enjoy Vanity Fair and The Namesake bored me beyond measure, but that's where my time watching her films ended prior to Criterion's latest Blu-ray release of Monsoon Wedding, a spectacular dramedy surrounding a Punjabi wedding, which instantly reminded me of Jonathan Demme's 2008 effort Rachel Getting Married, but at least this one was fun to watch.

Monsoon Wedding was released in 2001 and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film by the Golden Globes, but if I'm not mistaken it wasn't her first knockout film, which I presume to be 1988's Salaam Bombay!, a film I now hope to see. One thing I have always noticed about Nair is her excellent use of color, Vanity Fair particularly stands out in this regard, but I have always been so bored by her work. To the contrary, Monsoon Wedding is a lively, »

9. Romola Garai: She played the lead in Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights

8. Evan Rachel Wood: Somebody I've heard of, but she wouldn't make it in my Top Forty.

7. Anne Hathaway: Somebody I've heard of, but she wouldn't make it in my Top One Hundred.

6. Ellen Page: I really like her as an actress, a lot, but not so much as a hottie. »

Commentary: Flight of Fancy

13 September 2009 5:54 PM, PDT | The Bollywood Ticket | See recent The Bollywood Ticket news »

Bollywood’s elder statesman, actor Amitabh Bachchan, and his daughter-in-law, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has had some crossover success in the West, are the two Indian movie stars most frequently interviewed by foreign media, and condescending Western reporters often ask them why Bollywood doesn’t make "serious" or "realistic" films, to which they tiredly reply that Bollywood is "escapist cinema." I can’t blame them for giving reporters the answer they want to hear. The Bachchans are probably trying to be polite and diplomatic because they’d love to gain new fans in the West. Or maybe they’re just sick of explaining what appears to be a baffling concept to Western critics: entertainment is supposed to be entertaining.

But Bollywood films aren’t all fun and frivolity. What could be more serious and grounded in the reality of most people’s lives than finding love and making relationships work? »

Jonathan Demme Departs Bob Marley Film Part Way Through Production?

14 August 2009 6:21 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The first director attached to Marley, a documentary about the reggae icon Bob, was none other than Marty Scorsese. Back in May, however, reports surfaced that he was leaving the film due to a schedule clash and, hurrah for me, Jonathan Demme came aboard. Aside from the (brilliant) digression that was Rachel Getting Married, Demme has been focusing very much on documentaries recently, and has an unparalleled track record in concert and music films. He's just about the perfect director for this job. Bad news then, that The New York Post's Page Six are today reporting Demme is off the project. What's more, they claim that he was already into production and it was the screening of some rough cut that lead to him leaving. Demme's exit occurred after the movie's producer, Bill Clinton pal Steve Bing, saw the director's first round of editing and was less than impressed. What »

Jason Reitman's new film Up in the Air premieres next month at the Toronto Film Festival, the same fest that launched Juno a couple years ago. The movie will hit theaters nationwide likely later this yes, possibly in December. So what is Jason cooking up next? Variety has an article tonight about how Reitman has set up a new production shingle in West Hollywood called Right Away Films, where he will develop projects inhouse to direct, or possibly produce. Hidden far into the article is a list of projects that Right of Way Films is currently developing. We've done some research, and put together some of the details. Let's take a look at some of the projects that might be Reitman's next: See Also: Sambo - Legendary director Sidney Lumet's daughter Jenny Lumet broke onto the scene writing the award winning screenplay for Rachel Getting Married, and this »

Rachel Getting Married (Blu-Ray Review)

20 July 2009 5:59 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Main Feature (1H 52M 43S)

Screenwriter Jenny Lumet does a good job in getting down to basics and providing a believable tale of the classic middle-American dysfunctional family. Natural dialogue is much rarer than it should be and that aspect of this script impressed me far more than the story itself in which nothing much actually happens.

Director Jonathan Demme, most famous for Silence of the Lambs, in a departure from his usual techniques made the interesting choice to film this in a fly-on-the-wall documentary style which works wonders for Lumet’s script. It is difficult to sum up Demme’s importance to this film but the cast are so relaxed while performing in such a wild atmosphere and that is testament to his man-management abilities.

Anne Hathaway is outstanding as the lead character Kym and this comes as a surprise to me as I had her pinned as little more than another run-of-the-mill actress. »

Free Flick Fridays:[p]Something Wild

10 July 2009 12:00 AM, PDT | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Something Wild Dir. Jonathan Demme (1986) From the geniusly diverse mind of Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Rachel Getting Married) comes today's free flick, Something Wild. A likable (!) Melanie Griffith plays Lulu, a sexy rebel who randomly turns the world of straight-edged businessman Charles Driggs (Jeff Daniels) topsy-turvy with a series of mini-escapades. Finding that a little adventure is actually just what the doctor ordered, Driggs acquiesces to the whims of Lulu's wild child ways. However, the catch - there's always a catch - arrives in the form of Lulu's violent ex-con husband Ray (a role easily nailed by Ray Liotta), who catches up with our hero couple at Lulu's high school reunion. When Ray decides he wants Lulu back, all hell breaks loose, and the mood turns a little darker. If you've got some free time this weekend, inject a little 80s bad-assed-ness into your day and watch this movie. »
