Disney-Fox Deal Unleashes Flood of Free-Agent Executives, Talent

Disney’s $52.4 billion deal to scoop up most of 21st Century Fox marks the beginning of an historic realignment of Hollywood’s Big Six studios. It may also lead to an industry-shaking redistribution of executive and creative talent.

Rarely has such a large number of high-level executives suddenly become free agents, from Stacey Snider and Emma Watts on the 20th Century Fox film side to TV heavyweights John Landgraf, Dana Walden, and Gary Newman — not to mention 21st Century Fox president Peter Rice, who oversees all TV.

Beyond the boldface names, there are ranks of seasoned executives at Fox and Disney/ABC who are nervous about their future, after hearing Disney’s promise of delivering $2 billion in cost savings within two years of the deal’s closing. But this flood is also hitting at a time when Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and other upstarts are beefing up their operations as they launch the push into the content

David Boreanaz, Primetime’s Most Valuable Player, Has Another Hit With ‘Seal Team’ — Ratings Watch

David Boreanaz, Primetime’s Most Valuable Player, Has Another Hit With ‘Seal Team’ — Ratings Watch
David Boreanaz is once again proving his primetime power. Fresh off a 12-season run on the Fox staple “Bones,” Boreanaz didn’t miss a beat: His new CBS drama, “Seal Team,” has already been given a full 22-episode first season order, and is shoo-in for a sophomore renewal.

Not many performers can brag about starring in back-to-back-to-back hits, which makes Boreanaz a TV heavy hitter on par with stars like Ted Danson and William Shatner — the rare actors who have enjoyed multiple hits on unrelated shows. Boreanaz, of course, top-lined the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” spinoff “Angel” for several years (and 110 episodes) before moving on to 246 episodes of “Bones.”

Seal Team” stars Boreanaz as Jason Hayes, the leader of the Tier One team, a group deployed on clandestine missions worldwide at a moment’s notice. The show has been consistently making the top 25 ratings among both adults 18-49 and total viewers.

What Disney Bought: A Billion-Dollar Breakdown of Assets

Now that the megadeal is done and the smoke has cleared, there’s a price tag that can be put on each asset moving from Fox to Disney. Analyst estimates vary; the numbers below are derived from Rbc Capital Markets.

Disney is getting two groups of channels from Fox: FX Networks and National Geographic Channels. FX is the home of critically acclaimed, edgy series from “American Horror Story” to “Fargo”–exactly the kind of content Disney lacks. Nat Geo has just begun to broach that business with scripted fare like “Genius,” but it’s a classic brand that fits perfectly with Disney’s portfolio, and one that is already translating nicely to digital platforms like Snapchat.

That they may represent the priciest assets in the whole deal is less a reflection of their future worth and more a testament to how valuable linear channels have been over the past decade, given the billions

The X-Files, Legion And American Horror Story Among TV Shows Hoovered Up By Disney

A vast portion of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire has been offloaded to Disney.

That’s the headline that continues to send shockwaves across the four corners of the Internet, and the Mouse House is just getting started. Having drawn up tentative plans to consolidate its newly-acquired Marvel characters under the one umbrella (read: the Marvel Cinematic Universe), Disney is about to redraw the superhero genre as we know it. And at least according to CEO Bob Iger, whose time with the company will extend into 2021, this cross-pollination won’t impede on Fox’s own slate of adult-oriented and, in the case of Deadpool, hilariously crude superhero flicks.

But costumed crusaders weren’t the only motivating factor behind Disney’s acquisition. As we learned mere hours ago, the House of Mouse will soon gain control of Predator, Alien and a number of other high-profile film franchises, while USA Today has

What Will Happen To Hulu After Disney’s Fox Acquisition?

Disney officially announced its $52.4 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox properties, including its film studios and cable television businesses, which leaves streamers with a big question. What’s going to happen with Hulu?

But first, what is Disney getting out of this deal? In addition to Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, the company is snapping up multiple film production business that are home to big deal franchises like Avatar and X-Men. It’s also getting the TV production shops responsible for shows like The Simpsons and Modern Family. And, importantly, it’s getting Fox’s controlling interest in Hulu.

The way Disney puts it in the press release announcing the deal suggests that it may make Hulu international. As of now, the streaming service is only available in the United States (while a separate version of Hulu, Hulu Japan, exists there). Disney writes that their recent “transaction will

Disney/Fox Deal: How The Battle to Beat Netflix Starts Today, What Happens to the Fox Network, And Other Burning Questions

Rupert Murdoch is cashing out. The idea of 21st Century Fox being consumed by Disney in a $52.4 billion all-stock deal has shocked Hollywood, where industry players never thought they’d see the powerful Fox behemoth be largely consumed, rather than do the consuming. But as one insider noted, Murdoch is looking toward his final legacy — and turning in his chips while the getting’s good.

“Rupert is 86. He’s looking toward setting up [his family],” one observer said. The industry is rapidly changing, and as the Disney deal currently values the 21st Century Fox assets at more than $66 billion, it’s probably never going to get better than that. Fox shareholders, including the Murdochs, could hold around 25 percent of a new mega-Disney, which will now be supremely positioned to face off with Netflix and other giants in the new media landscape.

Disney Officially Sets Deal To Acquire 21st Century Fox As The X-Men Head Home To Marvel

Bringing an end to weeks of heated speculation and alleged false starts, Disney and 21st Century Fox have agreed to a massive $52 billion deal that will, in turn, reshape Hollywood as we know it.

The historic deal comes after Fox revealed its desire to offload film rights and other entertainment divisions in order to double down on news and sports, two of its largest business endeavors.

And though Sony and Comcast emerged as early contenders for a potential takeover, it wasn’t long before Disney became the sole suitor in this landmark arrangement, one which will see the Mouse House gain control of key Fox assets – namely Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four, The Simpsons and Modern Family, along with the FX and National Geographic businesses.

Behind the scenes, Disney CEO Bob Iger has signed a new deal to remain as Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company through 2021, while the

SAG Nominations: 16 Biggest Snubs and Surprises

SAG Nominations: 16 Biggest Snubs and Surprises
This year’s Oscar race is still as undecided as a swing state voter. On Wednesday, the Screen Actors Guild nominations failed to offer much clarity. Fox Searchlight’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” led with four nominations, more than any other film. However, other sure bets — such as “Shape of Water,” “Dunkirk,” and “The Post” — were left out of the best SAG ensemble category, usually a predicator of things to come at the Academy Awards.

On the TV side, the SAG Awards has a spotty track record when it comes to recognizing new shows. Last year, the group embraced “Stranger Things” (and did so again). This year, it also bestowed plenty of love to “Glow” and “Ozark,” two of the buzziest shows from Netflix. But in doing so, it snubbed critically acclaimed new offerings like Amazon’s “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” as well as Showtime’s “Smilf” — both of which picked up multiple Golden Globe nominations.

Niecy Nash and Olivia Munn unveiled the 2018 SAG Awards nominations with casual bursts of joy and humor Wednesday morning, and the list of TV nominations seems to reflect their devil-may-care attitude. There were plenty of sweet surprises and thus plenty of stunning snubs.

From series that performed beyond expectations — like “Glow” and “Ozark” — to shows that somehow didn’t make the cut — like “The Deuce” and “Fargo” — the TV nods require a bit of breaking down to make sense of it all.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of shows and performers that had their expectations dashed, and others who got the one good surprise phone call so early in the morning. These are the snubs and surprises of 2018:
