Storyline

Orphaned, penniless but ambitious and with a mind crammed with imagination and fresh ideas, the American Phineas Taylor Barnum will always be remembered as the man with the gift to effortlessly blur the line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for innovation and hungry for success, the son of a tailor will manage to open a wax museum but will soon shift focus to the unique and peculiar, introducing extraordinary, never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Some will call Barnum's wide collection of oddities, a freak show; however, when the obsessed for cheers and respectability showman gambles everything on the opera singer Jenny Lind to appeal to a high-brow audience, he will somehow lose sight of the most important aspect of his life: his family. Will Barnum risk it all to be accepted? Written by Nick Riganas

Trivia

Rebecca Ferguson admitted in an interview that she was extremely nervous when she had to perform a song in the film because she had to sing in front of a full audience plus all the crew. She commented that it was Hugh Jackman and his encouraging response to her performance that really helped her at the time. See more »

Goofs

The actor who plays Tom Thumb is 4' 2" in real life so he's made to look shorter in the film by having the actor stand or walk on his knees with fake shoes attached. In the 'This Is Me' number, Tom Thumb appears and disappears at different points. He's in the group of oddities as they enter the hall of concert goers since he reaches up for the Bearded Lady's hand and he sings his line. He's missing from the overhead group shot as the oddities march out of the concert hall towards the circus, since the actor would have been unable to keep up with the group shuffling along on his knees. He's still missing as the group approaches the monument outside the circus. Then he suddenly reappears when the group is stationary singing at the monument. See more »

Critics are Wrong
26 December 2017 | by See all my reviews

I have never written a movie review but I couldn't let this jewel of a movie be slammed by the cynical critics without saying how much I loved it. This was the perfect movie for our family on Christmas Day. Don't pay attention to the "professional" reviews; judge by the moviegoers who are praising the movie. It was moving, upbeat, and romantic. Can't say enough good things about it. Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams, and Zendaya are all so talented. Go see it in the theater to really appreciate how magical this movie is.
