Storyline

The adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok: the greatest hero of his age. The series tells the saga of Ragnar's band of Viking brothers and his family as he rises to become King of the Viking tribes. As well as being a fearless warrior, Ragnar embodies the Norse traditions of devotion to the gods: legend has it that he was a direct descendant of Odin, the god of war and warriors. Trivia

Gustaf Skarsgård assisted some of the other actors in the pronunciation of certain Scandinavian words. According to him the word the English speaking actors found most difficult was the name "Knut", which is often anglicized as "Canute" in history books and fiction. In Swedish and Norwegian Knut sounds like "Knuut". See more »

Goofs

The whole time line is quite mixed up for the series. At the time of Lindisfarne (S01), Ragnar wasn't even born. King Ecbert died about 6 years before Ragnar, in 839. Aethelwulf would have been king at that time. Aethelwulf himself died in 858, 7 years before the invasion of the Great Heathen Army. In the series, the invasion seems to follow Ragnar's death almost immediately, while in reality there was a 20 year gap between both (his sons - with the exception of Bjorn - being young children when he died). Season 4 also shows the winter at Repton as if it were immediately after landing in England, while in reality it was 8 or 9 years after the invasion. Ecbert (who is shown as king of Wessex) and his son Aethelwulf were long dead. Also the successive kings Aethelbald, Aethelberht and Aethelred (sons of Aethelwulf) were dead. King at the time of Repton would have been Alfred, Athelwulf's youngest son, about 24 years old. Not a child as shown in the series. See more »

Quotes

Ragnar Lothbrok: So have you returned to your faith, renounced ours?
Athelstan: I wish it was so simple. In the gentle fall of rain from Heaven I hear my God. But in the thunder I still hear Thor. That is my agony.
Ragnar Lothbrok: I hope that some day our Gods can become friends.

User Reviews

Empty. Painful. Unwatchable.
27 April 2015 | by (Germany) – See all my reviews

This show is an absolute disgrace to story-telling: shallow, pretentious, disorganized, tasteless. Not a single meaningful dialogue or a thought-provoking subtlety. Other than interesting costumes and great landscapes, there is absolutely nothing it can offer. Plot and acting are worse than in a bad soap opera, full of trivialities and chaotic, underdeveloped turns.

Promising events kept unfolding, but nothing came out of them. Just when you think "oh, now is a great chance to put things into perspective and raise an important question", all you get is a charming smile of the main actor and an empty phrase on the level of a hot-headed 12-year-old that doesn't even scratch the surface of...well, anything. But I kept hoping and after a few episodes and countless disappointments, I just stopped. Every chance missed, every point ruined.

If the makers came out and admitted they deliberately wanted to make it bad, I would give them 10 points for a masterly-designed mockery. They consistently invite epiphany and then slap it in the face and laugh at it. It is a mind rape, but not the intelligent one.

Someone obviously had a lucrative idea of tapping into the unexploited viking world, but unfortunately zero talent, intellect or sense of how to make it worthwhile. What a pity, what a waste..
