Star Wars: The Last Jedi movie review: a great disturbance in the Force

MaryAnn’s quick take… Upends expectations, demythologizes the mythos, and takes an iconic series in a bold new direction with a story full of humor, courage, and dazzling imagery. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a huge Star Wars fan

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

This is not going to go the way you think,” Luke Skywalker says to… well, someone who needs to hear it. Someone whose arrogance is borne of shortsightedness and narrow expectations. And this is also Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s word of warning to the audience. To us. This is the Star Wars movie, after all, from writer-director Rian Johnson, the guy who gave us The Brothers Bloom, a tricksy movie about con artists that knows we go into a movie about con artists with certain assumptions about what we’re about to see.

Ready Player One author Ernest Cline is working on a sequel

Author Ernest Cline is set to hit continue on Ready Player One, with the writer revealing during a Facebook Livestream for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming movie adaptation of his cult novel that he is working on a sequel to the 2011 novel.

“It’s true,” said Cline when asked about the rumours that he was working on a follow-up book. “I can’t talk about it too much, but there’s no better inspiration for a writer [than] to return to a world they’ve already worked on when they’re watching Steven Spielberg bring that world to life.”

Robert Rodriguez explains Alita: Battle Angel’s anime eyes

While James Cameron messes about on Pandora, he has handed the directorial duties of his years-in-development Alita: Battle Angel over to Predators director Robert Rodriguez. When the trailer debuted the other day, amongst the most striking features of the sci-fi epic were the rendering of Rosa Salazar’s eyes.

Speaking to Empire about the trailer, Rodriguez addressed the creative choices behind giving Alita such prominent features:-

“It was always Jim’s intention to create a photo-realistic version of the manga eyes that we’re so accustomed to seeing. We really wanted to honour that tradition and see that look standing next to any human character. To have the right person to emote behind it was really essential. Her origins are in the film and you understand why she looks that way. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, we have some pretty big windows. You can see a lot going on in there!

The streaming service dominated the 24th Annual SAG Awards nominations roster on Wednesday morning, cleaning up with 19 nods overall — ahead of second-place HBO (12).

Netflix’s nominees were spread out among some of its most critically acclaimed series, including “The Crown” and “Stranger Things” on the drama side, and “Glow” and “Orange is the New Black” in comedy. The streamer also landed multiple nods with “Ozark” and “Grace and Frankie,” while SAG favorite Robin Wright, now the sole star of “House of Cards,” scored a nod.

Also in the hunt: Hulu, which entered the SAG derby with “The Handmaid’s Tale.” But just like the Golden Globe nominations earlier this week,

Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones.” She portrayed Jean Grey in “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

The festival, which is being billed as a mini-Sundance, runs from Feb. 8 to Feb. 11 and will feature other indie world premieres, studio films, shorts, and episodics.

‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Director Admits That ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Stinks
These days, filmmakers doing press for an upcoming sequel tend to transform their interviews into an ongoing apology tour for the previous movie. “Yeah, that one stank, but we learned a lot and this one will be better!” has been trotted out enough to feel meaningless at this point. Still, X-Men: Apocalypse was so bad that […]

Simon Kinberg Admits ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Emphasized “Visual Effects Over Emotion”

Fun fact about “X-Men: Apocalypse”: while reviews weren’t kind, and it’s far from the pinnacle of the mutant movies, it’s actually the second highest grossing X-Men flick. Not counting “Deadpool,” “Logan,” or “The Wolverine,” it sits second behind all time leader, “X-Men: Days Of Future Past.” Regardless, it’s not going to go down as one of the best entries in the series and film’s producer and co-writer Simon Kinberg admits as much.

After more than a decade serving as writer and producer on 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, Simon Kinberg now finds himself behind the camera for the latest chapter of the main series, X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Earlier in the week we saw some first look images from the movie – Fox’s second attempt at adapting The Dark Phoenix Saga after the disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand – and now Kinberg has been chatting to EW about the movie, stating that he intends on course correcting the series after mistakes made with the previous chapter, X-Men: Apocalypse.

“I think we took our eye off what has always been the bedrock of the franchise which is these characters,” said Kinberg. It became about global destruction and visual effects over emotion and character… One of the things I went into this film wanting to do is obviously focus on the characters and give them
