Pretty Cringeworthy
19 December 2017 | by See all my reviews

Christ where do I begin with this one. OK, I'll make this quick. As an entertainment piece is rubbish. If your a non US citizen you'll probably end up wondering why they bothered to make a piece like this at all since it has very little to offer as a piece of entertainment cinema. If you're a American or shrouded in notions of US patriotism, the fight against "the war on terror" and nationalist sentiment you'll probably love it.

Its fairly obvious this film has been deliberately created to profit from the fervour surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing, and the producers have gone to great lengths to ensure that every weapon in their arsenal has been employed to achieve success... shamelessly so. Essentially Jeff Bauman and his family are used to catalyse those feelings of unity, patriotism and inherent American vastitude to raise the emotional pitch of this film, and I'd not be surprised if audiences in America were whooping, slapping backs, and shaking fists in solidarity during the screenings of this one.

There just isn't a lot to praise here and neither is the much point in picking it apart. Jake Gyllenhall is a pretty solid actor and does as solid a job here as you would expect from someone of his calibre, and actually the rest of the cast is suitably proficient. For me this was much like a war-time propaganda film, and I find it almost as difficult to judge objectively as I found it to watch, so I won't bother.

I will simply say that Its not a good film, nor is it worth watching. I don't recommend it. If you wan't to watch an great and moving film about the events surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing without the bigoted inclination, then watch Patriots Day directed by Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg instead.
